I must say that of all the campgrounds we have stayed in over the past 5 years, Mountain Top had the best scenic views, without question. Even though we had some damp weather, sitting at the picnic table in the evenings, watching the sun set over the horizon was the highlight of the day. Now the blueprint. The CG is not convenient to the major highways, but sleeping at night with the windows open and without the constant drone of trucks on an Interstate highway was very peaceful. The local roads are not the best, a little hilly with lots of turns, and the driveway to the CG is mostly gravel, but we had no problems getting there or departing. There is no bathhouse and most of the sites do not have sewer, but there is a dump station which was not an issue getting to or using. In fact, the CG has a sewer hose attached to the dump station so all I needed was my clear sleeve to watch the flow...no fuss, no muss. It appears from signs posted at the office that a bathhouse is planned for the 2019 season, as is Wi-Fi. There are no activities or swimming pool, so the few children we saw were riding their bikes. As the CG is on the top of a flat hill, the sites with trees and shade are the ones they call the rim sites, which are around the outside perimeter, and are gravel and very level. The sites in the middle of the field have no trees or shade, but for those who need satellite reception, they will work. I must admit that the two nights we spent here on our way west were quite nice and if in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to stay here. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

As other reviews have noted, owners/managers not on site but this was not a problem for us. Park is located on a narrow, hilly and winding road outside of town. Bathrooms and showers in a dirty cinder block building. Park itself is wooded and attractive. Going through town to get to the park was difficult due to narrow city streets and heavy traffic. We would not stay here again. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

There are the usual "box" stores but some distance from the park which, as noted, was a challenge to navigate.

We stayed 4 nights. Paid $45/night. No tax. No other fees. The reservation process was odd - had to call to reserve then go online to pay deposit via paypal. The public road to the CG isn't too bad - just curvy. What's bad is the 1/8 mile driveway into the CG which is a dusty mess. Our motorhome and jeep were covered in dust afterwards and I mean covered. There is a sign at the top to call a phone number which we did. Soon thereafter the owner drives up in a golf cart and conducts the check-in right there running our credit card through his cell phone gadget. We were led to our rim site and it was explained that our gray water would dump into a hose that drained down the mountainside. Huh? We pulled nose in and ran hoses under our motorhome in order to have the view from our large windshield. The DH hosed down the MH and Jeep even though we knew the same dust-mare would happen going back down the driveway. We were all set-up and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. The next day was warm and sunny. We quickly realized we had power issues because our a/c's couldn't run - not even a single a/c. We called. The owner came by and got a little defensive. He said he wasn't aware of power issues at our site. He offered to move us to an interior (non-rim) site which he thought would provide better power. We moved and he was right. The power was fine but now we had no view. If there is any sort of office or bathhouse or laundry, we looked and never saw it. The dump station is very narrow making it difficult (but do-able) for big rigs. There are porta-pottys in the field which smell awful even from afar. I didn't go near one. We could hear gun shots during the day so there must be a gun range nearby. Stargazing was excellent. We were underwhelmed by this CG and feel the pricing is ridiculous for what you get (or don't get - remember there is no sewer hook-up). We would stay somewhere else next time even if it meant a longer drive to the city. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Enjoy a sandwich at the famous Primanti Brothers in the Strip District. Check out Bicycle Heaven if you have any interest in bikes (it's free - voluntary donation requested). Visit Heinz Museum which has anything and everything related to the City of Pittsburgh. It's very well organized. Ride the bike path (drive your bikes to Millvale Riverfront Park and ride South from there). Downtown is great. Love the bridges and ballpark.

We really enjoyed our time here. We were a little hesitant because the reviews here were less than stellar, however it's the closest RV park near Pittsburgh so we went ahead and booked. If you're thinking about it like we were, do yourself a favor and book here. You'll be glad you did. Thankfully we did because we thought the campsite was great! The sites were not on top of each other, they were level, and we got one of the cool "rim" sites that overlooks the valley. It made for beautiful scenery and the sunsets were gorgeous there. The hosts (who own and live on the property) were extremely nice and accommodating. There are only water and 20/30/50 amp hookups at each site but there is a truck that comes around on Wednesdays to empty your black tank. There is a gray tank dump that is readily available at each site so that's really nice since we don't fill our black tank nearly as fast as we do our gray. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

Cost is for Passport America. Place very neat. We were in a campground, number 45, which had been recently set up (gravel, curb boards, water, electric meter). People at campground friendly, efficient and pleasant. Saw dump station with a large class A using it. Narrow but very accessible. There are ups and downs on the 908 and entrance road up and winding then gravel. But all very accessible just take you time. And so nice, quiet and cool up here on the mountain.

This is a wonderful quiet place to stay unless there is an event. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

Not a lot of choices in this area. This park is WAY overpriced at $45 per night. No activities here. The sites were level gravel with W/E only. Big rigs have "fun" trying to navigate the dump site through the trees. The only "facilities" here were a few portable toilets scattered about the park. The roads to the park are rough, steep, but navigable. The main driveway is dirt/gravel and a bit rough. My main gripe is their continued use of their website. It boasts a very large and modern gym on the premises, with pictures. There is no gym. The owner said someone "hacked/pirated" their website & posted the gym info with a link to redirect the user to the hackers. She said they were trying to steal her customers. Why she does not discontinue her site and start a new one is beyond me. But she now benefits from the bogus info as it would be a nice draw for customers to the campground. All fishy... We were lucky we couldn't get a site at another campground. We really enjoyed this park. It's easy in, easy out. Convenient, good utilities. The sites are all nice, with shade. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Park your rig to get the best view if you have an extension for electric. The drive up to Mountain Top is rather steep and rough but can be negotiated even with a tow. No transient sewer sites. Getting to the dump station is a bit tricky; unhook your toad before using it. A honey wagon comes around on Wednesdays. 50 amp electric had full voltage; a staffer said earlier problem has been fixed. Follow the camp's directions and use Exit 16 from Route 28. GPS/Maps will have you exit at No. 14 and put you on a narrow, hilly and twisting route. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

As others have commented, there are no other RV options in the Pittsburgh area. That said, we have been visiting annually for over 8 years and are very glad to have Mt Top, new family of owners are doing their best. They have added 19 spaces and gravel to several perimeter sites. Yes, it needs sewer or greater availability of pump outs than weekly. Perhaps they will arrange that. Certainly the dump access and egress is rough. This trip I noticed many tenters/several RV campers use the shower in the basement of the home. I used the laundry this visit for a load of sheets, it was ok. For all the rigs, perhaps they could add laundry machines and showers, but it will take time. The sites are level and it is a gorgeous setting overlooking the valley. Very safe and secure. Spacious. The access road Sun Mine is owned by the county so not under control of the RV site owners. The owners are very helpful and cordial. They set up a table in the basement for books swaps and free stuff. We replaced our coffeemaker while there and donated the one we had which was too small for us. As I said, it is the only place around and they are doing their best, it will take time. They get filled for events like the recent US Open, Steelers games, concerts, etc. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

One thing the Pittsburgh area needs is RV campgrounds. This campsite is about a 30 minute drive. Due to major bridge repair there were detours. Check the campground website for temporary directions. We reached the destination at the top of a mountain on Sun Mine Road. As we crested the hill it is surprisingly level and the sites are comfortable in size. The hilltop is grassy, firm soil, no muddy areas in sight. The odd thing about the placement of the water and electric hook-ups is that they are split with one hook-up on each side of your trailer. Our RV has the water input at the front with the electric about midway along the side of the trailer. Luckily our 50' water hose just made it to the faucet by passing under the trailer to the other side. The electric cord also was just long enough to reach the 50-amp circuit. The sites on the perimeter of the mountain top have fantastic views of the trees, farms and hillside below, some with lovely sunsets. This would be a beautiful place to be during fall leaf change. Most of the sites are treeless and open. There is no cable or Internet but with an antenna can pick-up many local channels with a strong signal, no pixelating. You must be self-sufficient to stay here. No laundry; one shower and toilet behind the owners log cabin...port-a-john on site. No sewer hook up at the sites but there is a convenient dump station to use for short stays. For longer stays the owner comes by to empty your black and gray lines. We will be staying again I'm sure because of family in the area. The public road to the campground is in good condition but narrow. The private road into the camp is in desperate need of repair...this place is under new ownership since 2014. Hopefully they will make the needed corrections and improvements. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This campsite is about 15 minutes from the quaint town of Saxonburg; 30 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh; about 8-10 minutes off of route 28. Pittsburgh Mills (15 minute drive) is the closest large shopping complex with Home Depot, Walmart, Macy's, Best Buy, an indoor mall and several restaurants that include Olive Garden, Steak N' Shake, Longhorn Steak House, Smokey Bones, Applebees, and many more.

As the choices of campgrounds close to Pittsburgh is very limited, I chose this one mainly because of several factors. One was that it is a $22.50 Passport America campground which the rate reflects for 2 nights per night. Then we were able to use Good Sam for the weekend.

The other is because it seemed to be promising as their Facebook page is active and the owners have just purchased it a year ago and promises upgrades to their campground. Sites are on a wide open grassy field. Interior roads are gravel but access to the campground is up a narrow hill. The interior signage is very confusing as to where the office is.

But while we were there, we did not notice any signs of improvements, as a matter of fact, they do something that is quite disturbing. The campground sits literally on top of a mountain which was about 1200 feet above sea level. There are permanent/work assignment campers around the perimeter of the place which are allowed to let their "gray" water drain off of the side of the mountain. There is a honey wagon that is available for a fee once a week.

Also another negative was the location of the dumping station leaves a lot to be desired. After dumping, you must travel down a short very narrow interior lane that passes directly underneath a low hanging high voltage power line!

Pittsburgh downtown access was down a very busy 4 lane road. If you visit, follow their directions on the website. If you follow GPS, it takes you down a road that there is an overpass with a 10 foot 8 inch 1 lane bridge!

We investigated other options while there and will not be back to this campground. We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.

Very quiet, all grass and a great view. Incoming road is steep and has curves. Sixty/night. Thirty for Passport America. Owner and workers are very friendly. We picked our own site. Must be self-contained as there is no sewer or restrooms / showers. Needs an influx of money to upgrade in order to support the price. This park consists of a level open grassy area at the top of a steep hill accessed by rough road. Interior roads are gravel. Sites are grass. Water pressure is low, but the 50 amp electric is good. There are no sewer hookups, Wi-Fi or cable. AT&T phone service is from an affiliate, but is very good. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rate shown reflects the Passport America discount. We stay here every trip to my home town near Pittsburgh; 5 times in 2011. Owner- hosts live onsite. It is safe and quiet and heavily inhabited with trailers and rigs of construction, gas, and pipeline workers and their families. There are really no amenities in the big field, other than basic hook ups, but still, they are the only game it the area. No rest rooms, no showers nor laundry services. The drive to the place makes you think you are landing back up a mountain to who knows where, but once at the top of the windy hill, it is all open. We stayed here for one week in a 40' 4-slide motorhome. The main road is paved, but it is a curvy hill. The campground entry road is gravel, also up a hill. However, we had no problems, not even trees to worry about. The campground is wide open on the top of a hill, with beautiful green grass (parked on gravel). The owners were very nice. Apparently shower, bathroom, and laundry were available in the basement of their log home (didn't use). We really enjoyed the open feeling of the campground, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, gentle breeze. It is mainly a great place to park to enjoy peace and quiet which is what we like. No pool, no activities, no playground. My Verizon & AT&T worked fine. We had shade at the rear of our site - trees are around the edge of the campground. We used Passport America and paid $25 a day for 50 amp, water, and the owner dumps the tanks. We would stay here again - I would give the rating a 10 for what we needed (convenience to other towns, peace and quiet, good management). We camped at Mountain Top Bluegrass Festival & Campground in a Motorhome.
