Great location, great spots, great staff, high price. Level spots, 50 amp, pull thru, patio, fire pit, good space. Great location for trips to Jamestown, Fall River & Newport. We really like this place, just wish the price was more inline with other campgrounds.

Take the entrance off Main Street at the middle school. If you enter from anywhere else, you end up on a long dirt, washboard road. It will dust up and shake you up. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

We had a Good Sam discount, but it was very expensive for what you get in an RV campground. Monday through Thursday is $65, and Friday through Sunday is $75/night! We had 50 AMP electric, water, sewer, and cable. We did not use cable, but had many Over The Air Channels. The staff at Melville Ponds is very helpful and nice people. We were under the shade trees. The site was on a slant, so our 5th wheel tires on one side were off the ground to get level. It was a quiet RV campground. It is 5 miles north of Newport. There is a small laundry with 2 washers, and 2 dryers that was inexpensive. There is no pool or activity room, but they have a small playground for the kids. We did not use the restrooms or showers, so we cannot comment on them. It was the most convenient and close RV park to the Navy Base for our activities. It was just too expensive for what they provide, but I guess they can get away with it due to lack of competition. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Everything in the area is very expensive, so bring your food and other items you need. Restaurants are very expensive for what you get in Newport, and not all that tasty. We were here for our Grandson's commissioning in the U.S. Navy, so we do not see a reason to return in the future.

I would give an excellent rating if there were a couple of activities to do on site . Site was level gravel, FHU's, good spacing. Trees too thick for satellite. Good location to base out of while exploring the area. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed one night in site #218, a back-in site with W/E/S. The roads aren't overly tight but the way they are laid out and where the trees are, this site is more of a pain to get into than it should be. The spot itself is fine. Note that despite what their website says, ALL of their sites have full hook ups. This isn't a fancy park, but clean and fine for passing through. Bathhouses, laundry, and grounds were all clean. Their internet was excellent. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T). The signage on the way in leaves you hanging, but we figured it out anyways. It brings you in along a long bumpy road. Google Map's directions, on the other hand, takes you by a school, but it brings you to the campground with only a little of the bumpy dirt road. This is what I'd recommend. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Nice little gem on the North End of the Newport peninsula. Our site is water and electric only, nicely level and next to a bathhouse. There are FHU sites, just none available during our stay. Power is steady and water pressure good. They have a couple of grey water dump spots throughout the campground so handling your grey water doesn't involve a hike to the sewer dump by the office. ATT and Verizon voice and data are adequate. Campground WiFi works okay. Park was quiet during the week, but gets noisy on the weekends. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The #60 bus runs between Newport and Providence. It is on a 30 minute schedule, but since it splits East Main with West Main, service near the campground is hourly. Plentiful of PAID parking in Newport. Try the Cliff Walk. Had a good meal at the Brick Yard Pub on Thames Street. This is a boater's paradise.

This is a former U.S. Military MWR facility. When we made reservations, we weren't told that some (a few) sites had water, power, and sewer. We got a water and power only site. Sites are spacious, but the water and power hook-ups are on separate sides of your coach. And, even when parked in the center of your site, a reach to get to. It took 48 feet of my 50 foot water hose to reach the spigot. Site was dirt base and fairly level. Not many other campground options in the Newport area. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

Great campground within 20mins of the newport mansions. This is a quiet campground with lots of trees and very shady camping spots. The grey water disposal spots are convenient since there are no sewer connections at the sites, only a dumping station near the exit. The sites are private with a lot of space between them. The roads are gravel and full of holes. The rate of $55 would be steep in any other area for the amenities offered, but this is Newport where a good burger can set you back $20 (with $1.50 for lettuce and tomato). We really enjoyed our stay here. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

To visit the homes get the the dual membership at $75 from the newport preservation society and visit all the homes whenever you want. We spent 2 days visiting the homes. Parking was convenient at all of the homes. Do not try and visit with your travel trailer or RV, leave that at the campground.

You definitely do not get what you pay for. It's a clean quiet campground, but there isn't much to do. No pool, no game room and a playground is away from almost every site. My biggest complaint though is the service location, water on one side electric on the other and both were way forward near the road. If you're going to camp here bring lots or cord and hose! Not much parking in the sites, luckily the spot next to us was empty. Made us book 3 night minimum even though the park wasn't even half full. Overall, nice place though just a lot of $$ for what you get. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

I give this RV park a poor rating because it is an extremely poor value. They charge a range of $55-70 per night and yet do not have a pool, laundry, Wi-Fi, or cable TV. On top of that the roads are in poor condition and the single dumpster is in a very inconvenient location. This park is not even near a beach! They only accept cash as payment. We were told this park belongs to the city of Portsmouth so I guess the city fathers have decided to soak the tourists. This is one of the very few places to stay within a reasonable distance of the mansions in Newport. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

Although this park is considered "big rig friendly," it is a tight squeeze. The interior roads of the campgrounds are narrow, curved and could use some tree trimming. Many sites are small, so other campers' cars are parked close to the road, making a wide swing to avoid branches difficult or impossible. We got a long scratch down the side of our 40' motorhome trying to get to our site. There are some spacious sites here, however most are taken by seasonal campers, many of whom have permanent decks, sheds, etc. Water and electrical hook-ups are in very odd places at many sites, so plan to bring long hoses and cords. This is a very convenient campground for exploring the Newport area. Large grocery store, gas stations, and eateries are all on the main road leading towards downtown Newport. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

Campground was nice enough, a little pricey for for what you get. The hookups in my site were a little whacked out. Water and electric was on the wrong side. I got lucky and the power cord reached, however I had to go buy another hose for water. The sewage hook-up was a pain to say the least, it had to flow uphill, made for a small mess when tearing down to leave. There are some permanent residents, everyone was nice. Be aware this campground is on a street that is literally off the Melville Elementary School parking lot. The street Bradford is directly across from Cindy's Country Cafe. This is a very good place to grab breakfast. Nightly rate reflects full hookups with 30 amp service. Sites are gravel but fairly level. This campground offers one huge advantage and that is the 20 minute drive to the Newport Mansions. The website offers no help in general as to check in and check out times. We arrived at 11:15 and were told check in is at 1:00. When we questioned why the website did not indicate the time the explanation was the City is always changing the site. The receptionist called her boss and got approval for us to go to our site. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

Nice place to stay to visit Newport and check out the mansions. I would have given a 10 if the sites were level. Good quality firewood and very quiet at night, but we were here off season. We would stay again. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We very much enjoyed our stay. Our site was huge, wide, long. Grounds are very neat and tidy. Very quiet, as the campground was not full. Minimal activities at this campground, but we don't mind at all. Great hiking trail on site, new playground for small children. Unlimited things to do around this area. Staff was very accommodating when we asked to stay passed check-out time. We would highly recommend this campground. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.

This campground was a nice surprise given that I lived in the area for many years and did not know it was here. It was nicely treed and and private and level, convenient to everything. (The lady in the office said they never leave the radio on in the bathroom overnight and if it happened, it was by accident.) We found it to be very quiet. While we did not use the restrooms, we walked by them and peaked in, they looked clean. This is a great location. Only disadvantage is the $4 toll if you go over the Newport Bridge to access the West Bay. But you really don't need to go to the West Bay, because the island has everything you might desire, including beautiful beaches, great restaurants, historic areas and mansions, music festivals, shopping, etc. You can take the Mount Hope Bridge over to Bristol for a walk through a pristine antebellum town, take a ferry to Prudence Island (from Bristol) or to Block Island (from Newport) and head to Warren for antiquing if you need a change of pace. I would definitely stay here again. We camped at Melville Pond Campground in a Motorhome.
