Beautiful facility, everyone was friendly and the park is enjoyed for day use by locals as well. Several trails for walking/running/biking. We stayed in the overflow camping area - no hookups, and under the power lines - perfect for passing through the area. Quiet hours 10p loosely enforced when it comes to running generators - at least until you call security. They finally rolled through around 11:30p and the generator stopped. Construction is going on within the park so they're offering a discount - certain facilities are closed but it didn't impact us. We'd stay here again as we transition north and south. We parked on grass and the roads are paved and easy to navigate. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Driving a 45' motorhome with a 13'6" clearance to this park is gut wrenching. The trees outside the park, on approach roads are not trimmed and we drug through many areas. No choice but to drive very slow and use all the road in many places. Lots of horns and the finger. Family in a travel trailer were depending on the restroom/showers. What park manager closes both bathhouses in the campground for renovations at the same time? Just idiotic. Otherwise, the park is beautiful. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We have visited Charleston many times and this is our preferred place to stay. It's a lovely county park with a campground included. The park is fantastic, with a beautiful lake, climbing wall, dog park adjacent to the lake, and many other amenities. The campground itself is good but not great. The sites are all dirt and most are back-in, although there are a few pull-through sites. Most of the sites are well shaded and spacious, but there are a few sites that are right on top of your neighbors - fine if your camping with friends, but too close for me to be to strangers. We recommend you check out the park map on-line before committing to a space. Also, reservations are recommend as the park us usually full. During our stay in April 2018, both bath-houses were closed for renovation. It seemed odd they decided to close both at the same time, but that's the current state of things. This resulted in a 30% discount, which was a great deal for us, but if you're tent-camping, you may want to wait for the renovations to be completed. As mentioned in other reviews, the one big drawback of this park is that getting to it requires you navigate some narrow roads with overhanging limbs. This did not present a problem for us. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Great campground. It's unusual to find a public campground with sewer and 50 amp, and when I do I usually take advantage of the opportunity. We stayed a week. Lots of trees so satellite may be difficult and they don't have cable. Antenna only brought in a few channels. Utilities are well placed and worked well. Lots of walking trails which we made good use of. Close to downtown Charleston. One night on our way home we saw 3 deer. Lots of coons. We will definitely return. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

We have stayed here several times. Campground is clean and staff helpful. Restrooms were being remodeled, all at one time. Only one available was a good walk. Was a busy weekend and park was full. We were with a camping club so we were spread out. Our site was a pull thru full hookup and spacious. County park has many activities for all ages. Charleston is full of historic sights and good restaurants. We camped in a 39 foot 5th wheel. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great campground most sites are well spaced and have privacy from the trees. A few are double sites and I'd avoid those unless traveling with friends. The county park has great walking trails and a fantastic dog park. Convenient to Charleston, about 20 min to the historic district. In the streets leading to the county park it is a bit scary due to low hanging live oak branches over the tree. I'm 12'7" tall and did not hit the branches. I will definitely be back. I had site 98 and it was not quite level. Had to put a few boards under drivers side rear wheels. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

The campground itself is pretty good but the real attraction is the amenities. We did not have trouble getting in but we just have a travel trailer. It was not difficult to level, only two issues are the sticky sand/dirt (impossible to keep out) and the no-see-ums. You will need bug spray every time you step outside if it is warm. The bathhouses were closed for renovation, hence the discounted price. Did not matter to us as we are self-contained. They will accept your mail at the campground office and hold it for you, nice if you are on the road for awhile. One of the best dog parks we have seen in our travels. It was most crowded in the late afternoon but never overcrowded and everyone was well-behaved. The paved paths are great for walking, not that great for bicycling. Every time you get going, you have to slow down to cross a road. The path intersections are not that well marked but you will see a colored diamond nailed to a tree if you walk a little ways. I finally brought a map with me. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

In addition to all the tourist activities in the area, try the farmer's market on Johns Island. We were not expecting much given the time of year but they had a lot going on - crafts and some produce, live music, seating areas and picnic tables, a play area for kids, lots of prepared foods, even take and bake pastas. We sat down with our lattes and our dogs and people watched. We also enjoyed Caw Caw Wildlife Preserve where we saw many birds and numerous alligators.

Not a good option for tall RVs. Tree limb clearance issues on the roads leading to the county park had us cancel our reservations. The tallest RV we notices within campground was 12'2" (I asked the owners), so RVs that are around that height should not have an issued navigating the roads to the county park and within the campground. Our challenge is that we are just over 13'4" (with solar panels on the roof) and we could not find any route that had trees trimmed high enough, so we could safely travel to the county park. We thought we would be "ok", but choose to stay at an area campground for a few days prior to our county park reservations, to make sure. The route that campground suggested (and someone within the park also confirmed) was the best for tree limb clearance was traveling down Folley Rd/171 to Camp Road and then taking a right onto Riverland Drive to reach the county park entrance. We drove down those roads and various others (solely in our truck), without finding a route we were comfortable we could safely travel on. We did drive past our reserved sites 31 and 37, which looked like they could have easily fit us. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The route to the county park that has the best tree limb clearance is traveling down Folley Rd/171 to Camp Road and then taking a right onto Riverland Drive to reach the county park entrance. Note: There is currently ongoing construction on Camp Road, which could make the right hand turn off of 171 to Camp Road complicated for longer RVs (alt. past Camp Road and make a U-turn in the Walmart parking lot; thereby enabling you to turn left onto Camp Road from 171).

This is a fantastic municipal park with tons of amenities and activities. The campground is very nice with large, level, shaded, full hookup sites. They are 30 minutes away from Historic Charleston. I would suggest reservations due to the attraction of the park activities. The dog park is very unique as it is a large island in the middle of a pond. There were tons of animals running around having the time of their lives. There is a huge community water park (seasonal), a rock wall, seemingly endless walkways, and at Christmas a fantastic light display like I've never seen. We will most definitely be staying here again very soon. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is an extremely large County Park full of all sorts of activities and extra large RV sites. Our site was heavily shaded, private and more than long enough for our 39-foot fifth wheel and Tow vehicle. All utilities and sewer were conveniently placed and worked well. We were able to receive OTA television stations without problem and had minimal, but adequate, Verizon and Sprint service. The laundry facilities were an added bonus for $1.50 a load. This would be a perfect place to come with children as there are so many activities. The huge fence dog park does require paperwork to allow your dog to enter But even has its own private lake swimming area. If you want to go into Charleston proper it will take about 15 minutes depending on traffic. The drive into the park is through residential areas with a lot of trees and a narrow road but we were able to navigate it without problem. While we were there they were setting up for their enormous holiday light show which must be amazing when it is all completely lit. We would stay here again if we were in the Charleston area. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

If you have access to AAA they had a wonderful walking tour of the historic section of Charleston in their South Carolina book. The boat tour to Fort Sumter is a must. We took the house tour offered through the Charleston Museum of one of the historic homes on Church Street. George Washington literally slept there.

Great camp ground have used for years. CG has numerous facilities to keep families occupied, big dog park, fishing, boating, bike and walking paths galor. Think maintenance of CG has gone down recently. The sites have tree limbs and vines that brush and scratch coach. Tree branches that rub top of cars so also does to all other vehicles. Most of all there are numerous puddles that have standing water. One had green slime and had not been attended to. The low areas need attention. Mosquitos were large and plentiful. On edge of swamp bring bug spray. The sites are large-long and wide also friend friendly. One last, roads leading into CG need many of low hanging limbs trimmed. The new taller MH and 5th wheels are struck by branches. GC doesn't do road work but may be able County to do some work. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.
