Not a good option for tall RVs. Tree limb clearance issues on the roads leading to the county park had us cancel our reservations. The tallest RV we notices within campground was 12'2" (I asked the owners), so RVs that are around that height should not have an issued navigating the roads to the county park and within the campground. Our challenge is that we are just over 13'4" (with solar panels on the roof) and we could not find any route that had trees trimmed high enough, so we could safely travel to the county park. We thought we would be "ok", but choose to stay at an area campground for a few days prior to our county park reservations, to make sure. The route that campground suggested (and someone within the park also confirmed) was the best for tree limb clearance was traveling down Folley Rd/171 to Camp Road and then taking a right onto Riverland Drive to reach the county park entrance. We drove down those roads and various others (solely in our truck), without finding a route we were comfortable we could safely travel on. We did drive past our reserved sites 31 and 37, which looked like they could have easily fit us. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The route to the county park that has the best tree limb clearance is traveling down Folley Rd/171 to Camp Road and then taking a right onto Riverland Drive to reach the county park entrance. Note: There is currently ongoing construction on Camp Road, which could make the right hand turn off of 171 to Camp Road complicated for longer RVs (alt. past Camp Road and make a U-turn in the Walmart parking lot; thereby enabling you to turn left onto Camp Road from 171).

Great stay but without bathrooms. Under renovation which is why the 30% discount. Wonderful park with loads of activities for all. Convenient to downtown Charleston and Folly beach. Very cold during our stay but would be a very active place in warmer times. Reserve early. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a fantastic municipal park with tons of amenities and activities. The campground is very nice with large, level, shaded, full hookup sites. They are 30 minutes away from Historic Charleston. I would suggest reservations due to the attraction of the park activities. The dog park is very unique as it is a large island in the middle of a pond. There were tons of animals running around having the time of their lives. There is a huge community water park (seasonal), a rock wall, seemingly endless walkways, and at Christmas a fantastic light display like I've never seen. We will most definitely be staying here again very soon. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is an extremely large County Park full of all sorts of activities and extra large RV sites. Our site was heavily shaded, private and more than long enough for our 39-foot fifth wheel and Tow vehicle. All utilities and sewer were conveniently placed and worked well. We were able to receive OTA television stations without problem and had minimal, but adequate, Verizon and Sprint service. The laundry facilities were an added bonus for $1.50 a load. This would be a perfect place to come with children as there are so many activities. The huge fence dog park does require paperwork to allow your dog to enter But even has its own private lake swimming area. If you want to go into Charleston proper it will take about 15 minutes depending on traffic. The drive into the park is through residential areas with a lot of trees and a narrow road but we were able to navigate it without problem. While we were there they were setting up for their enormous holiday light show which must be amazing when it is all completely lit. We would stay here again if we were in the Charleston area. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

If you have access to AAA they had a wonderful walking tour of the historic section of Charleston in their South Carolina book. The boat tour to Fort Sumter is a must. We took the house tour offered through the Charleston Museum of one of the historic homes on Church Street. George Washington literally slept there.

Other that Turtle Beach in Sarasota FL, this is the best county park we've ever stayed in! Large, spotless, loads of activities, and friendly employees. Shuttle to downtown Charleston is $10./person/round trip - would definitely return and highly recommend. A real jewel. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Great camp ground have used for years. CG has numerous facilities to keep families occupied, big dog park, fishing, boating, bike and walking paths galor. Think maintenance of CG has gone down recently. The sites have tree limbs and vines that brush and scratch coach. Tree branches that rub top of cars so also does to all other vehicles. Most of all there are numerous puddles that have standing water. One had green slime and had not been attended to. The low areas need attention. Mosquitos were large and plentiful. On edge of swamp bring bug spray. The sites are large-long and wide also friend friendly. One last, roads leading into CG need many of low hanging limbs trimmed. The new taller MH and 5th wheels are struck by branches. GC doesn't do road work but may be able County to do some work. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Beautifully shaded pull-thru sites, although not particularly level. Due to the trees, you don't really see your neighbors who are a decent distance away. Lots of amenities--lake, water park, pretty bike paths, amazing dog runs. They do little to maintain the site though. My fire ring literally had 4" of ash in it and the water faucet spewed water like a fountain. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

We loved everything about this park as we were joined by our local family to experience the Total Eclipse. Our site was perfect. We took our pet to the dog park and the kids to the water park and play ground. We rode our bikes around the park. We'd definitely stay there again and would love to do so at Christmas when they have their holiday light display. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

This park exceeded my expectations because it had so many great public spaces. Best dog park I've been to. Best playground equipment I've seen. So many walking and biking trails in and out of shade. Tons of activities for the whole family like a spray park, water park, climbing walls, kayaking, paddle boarding, paddle boats, and planned activities. Truly the nicest park I've visited to date as far as amenities go.

Word of warning for my fellow big rig folks! This is a bit of a pucker to get into because the very beautiful low branched trees. They are close to the road and very low in places. So if you need help, get help or let them know you need a spot that will be easier to get into if you're camper is tall and/or long! Overall I'd highly recommend this park to my friends. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Excellent county facility that rivals most private parks. Clean and cared for. We had 2 inches of rain during our stay and only saw 2 sites that had areas with some water standing. Finest dog park I have ever seen. Laundry area by restrooms. Water splash pad and climbing wall available for fee. Can't go wrong with this place. We had a 40' 5th wheel and 2 vehicles on site. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of our favorite parks and we stay here often, usually as part of a large group. The area and the park have a lot to offer. As is prone to happen, it often rains with passing afternoon storms. When it does rain, it often leaves many of the sites underwater. Many sites do not drain and remain under water for several days, making the site unusable and access to your camper difficult. I, and others, have frequently complained to staff, but year after year nothing is ever done in an attempt to rectify the problem. That said, we still love the park and enjoy our stays here. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very convenient to downtown, offers shuttle service $5 each way. Very clean and well maintained park. Lots of walking trails nearby, and quiet overnight. Be wary if coming when they are hosting an event (jazz in the park or the like) as traffic is hell & you get stuck just like everyone else. Also the trees overhang the roads on the way to the park, we scraped ourselves a fair bit before we got to the park but no way to avoid. Big shout out to one of the staff there. Super friendly, kind and helpful person. Asset to their team. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Nice shady campground with beautiful walking trails. Wifi was very good. Very quiet campground. The road coming into the campground is narrow, so go slow. As others have said, pay attention to choosing your campsite. Luckily we chose one that was nicely shaded without having to share with some one. This park, like so many county and city parks we've visited over the years is a real jewel. We were here for three nights visiting family. Our site which was a shared site was none the less very roomy when compared to most commercial campground sites nowadays. We had two neighbors arrive and leave during our stay and both were nice, considerate people. The utilities worked well. Water pressure was good, electric strong and stable. The sewer port was accessible, but sat down in a hole such that when it rained (which it did), the sewer connection went under water. Thankfully my sewer gland held integrity or it could have been messy. WiFi was available, but I'm not fond of "open" networks so we opted to use our Verizon hot spot. The park grounds were immaculately kept, and there is something to do for all ages. Nice walking/biking trails. Playgrounds and water park for the kids. And THE BEST dog park we have ever visited. "Max" had a blast. We will definitely return here next time we're on the island. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

If you are traveling with dogs, treat them and yourselves to a visit to the park's dog park. You'll love it ! Be prepared for a wet, sandy dog. Have a hose ready when you get back to the rig, and remember... There is no more affectionate creature on Earth than a wet dog.

Nice park with many attractions. Management unfortunately permits restrooms and showers to be in poor maintenance condition. Campsites are large and private, but offerings are overflowing and trash and butts are prevalent. Very much needs management responsibility. For $50/night I expect more.
