Staff are very helpful and courteous, have shuttles that go to Charlestown. Lots of trails for bikes and hiking, lots to do for kids and adults. Camp sites are shaded, making reservations for next year. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Exceedingly clean bathrooms area for this park, and in general the facilities were top notch. Wifi was available throughout the park, but very inconsistent in the actual bandwidth--it seemed to fluctuate wildly, and not just in the evening. We were there during the Holiday light display which runs from November through early January. Really impressive display. Of course, we missed the waterpark since we were there in November. Short drive into downtown Charleston. Plenty of bike paths around park, and a nice playground. We camp with small children, and there were very few other families at the park (at least when we visited.) We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a great park. Huge, with big water park, biking, fishing... And it has one of the very best dog parks ever. Huge with a big pond. Short, 15 minute drive to downtown Charleston. Only downside is that drainage is not great so when it rains, there are puddles everywhere. Sites are gravel back in. Lots of shade trees. Good for shade, bad for satellite reception. Wifi very slow. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a fantastic campground that sits within a park run by Charleston County. The park has many amenities: swimming, a splash park for kids, walking and biking trails, and more. The sites are shaded with well-placed hook-ups. Access roads are a bit tight for a big rig but manageable. We had a pull-thru site (#97) on a corner - easy in and out. Trash receptacles and recycling bins are conveniently placed throughout the campground. Access to the park is off Central Park Road and Riverland Drive. Both roads are narrow with low, overhanging trees. Our Class A is 12'10" high and we scraped several trees going in and out of the park. When leaving the park there is a tight right turn from Riverland onto Central Park which we made fine with our big rig but only because there was no oncoming traffic on either road. We spent a week here and were able to see a lot of the Charleston sights. Overall, this is a great park and we will definitely return. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Downtown Charleston is an easy 15-20 minute drive from the campground. There is also a shuttle bus that will take you downtown in the morning and bring you back in the afternoon. It's $10/person round trip. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants close to the campground including a Publix.

Overall a great park. Arrived in a pouring rain so the parks hard packed sand/dirt sites were muddy with lots of low spots and standing water. The water park when finished should be great for kids.Very large county park with lots of outdoor activities and no money spared. The water laden oak tree limbs were scary low for our 45 foot motor home on the way to the park but no damage done. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

We shouldn't have been surprised from all the other reviews, but this county park is a real gem. Some of the sites get a bit close without too much tree/shrub between but overall nice campground with full hookups. Recently renovated bathrooms and showers were excellent. A few washers/dryers around ($2/load). The water park across the street looks like it should be a lot of fun but was under construction during our visit. Overall the park facilities are great with a huge dog park on the pond where dogs have lots of space to run and swim. Good paved trails for walking/running. And of course the location is great too as you are ~10 minutes from Charleston and also 10 minutes to Folly beach, so there is plenty around to do. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

All of the positive comments are true. This is probably the nicest County park we have ever been to. They are ready to open a new water feature section of the park that actually has a Lazy River feature. Entrance fee for adults is $11.99, a great deal. All sites are large and deep with full hookups. There are over 4 miles of paved walking/biking trails within the park. Charleston historic district is an easy 15-20 minute drive. Price was a bit high for a County park, but given the facilities and awesome staff, it was well worth it! If you have children, this is a great destination park! Bring your bikes! We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Harbor tour is excellent, $20 for 1 1/2 hours with excellent historic interpretation. Aquarium entrance is $29.50, Way overpriced. Drive 15 minutes south to the Charleston tea plantation. Only tea plantation in the USA. Free factory tour, all the different teas you can drink, and trolley fields tours are $12.00, and very informative.

Second time staying here. Great park. Much as been said about access. We have a 45' motorhome and I strongly suggest coming in on camp road from Folly. Made it with light touches from the tree branches. The lowest was just as you made the turn off of Folly. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

One of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed in. The three trails are paved and wide for walking side-by-side. Campsites are large and graveled. They were working on some of the water features, therefore, they were closed. The office was very helpful with directions. The camp store is very well stocked. They offer a shuttle to downtown Charleston, which we did not use. Downtown Charleston is not far away. The planning and design of this park and the operation are first class. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Holy Moly! Getting here is a big rig nightmare! Charleston roads are chock full of big overhanging trees. We heard one ding after another hitting who knows what, and dodging was impossible especially on the two-lane roads. Once in the park, there are still lots of trees, not necessarily over the road, but making it tight to get into some of the sites. Sites vary widely from huge, wide and long sites to short and narrow. Some are buddy sites (like 101 which was our first site) so you are right next to your neighbor. The pull thru sites are the most big rig friendly - if you can stand the harrowing drive to get here. All sites are basically sand with a tad of gravel mixed in. Most sites are fairly level with side to side issues the main factor. Full hookups which is great. Satellite is not possible in the majority of sites due to trees. We were able to get Directv in site 115 by jockeying around a little. Verizon 4g 1-2 bars but it jumps around. Campground WII FI is unusable. It is a quiet campground for the most part (when we were here during the off season) except for the military jets flying around. As others have mentioned, lots of things for kids to do. There is a bike path around the park that is pretty flat. It is pricey - it would have been about $50 a night but we got a good discount due to bathroom renovations. It is a busy, busy park with sites almost immediately occupied as someone else left. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

This park is huge, has lots of trails and activities and plenty of things to do like disc golf, corn hole etc. I would imagine people with kids would like this place because of the climbing wall, huge playgrounds and splash park. Dog lovers will enjoy the HUGE off leash dog park complete with doggie swimming beach. The FHU sites are large and private, level and had strong 50 amp power. There's tons of shopping 10 minutes away (Publix, Walmart etc). The bathrooms are immaculate. They had just opened the one on our loop so it was brand new and really nice. Folly beach is a great place for a day at the beach as well as the town itself is really cute with tons of stores and restaurants. Verizon (15d/l) and ATT (17 d/l) were strong w/ out a booster. Lots of OTA channels. I would have given this park 5 starts except for the following issue: The roads in and out have incredibly low hanging trees. We're in a Class A which is only 12 ft tall. I felt something scrape the top of my rig on the way out going up Camp Road to 171. I did not have any scraping on the way in coming up 700 to Riverland however the branches were still very low there as well and I have never experienced a drive with branches that made me more nervous than this . I think someone in a large 5th wheel who's taller than me would struggle here and I would not attempt it myself. I could not find another way while driving around that would have been any better. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

We have visited Charleston many times and this is our preferred place to stay. It's a lovely county park with a campground included. The park is fantastic, with a beautiful lake, climbing wall, dog park adjacent to the lake, and many other amenities. The campground itself is good but not great. The sites are all dirt and most are back-in, although there are a few pull-through sites. Most of the sites are well shaded and spacious, but there are a few sites that are right on top of your neighbors - fine if your camping with friends, but too close for me to be to strangers. We recommend you check out the park map on-line before committing to a space. Also, reservations are recommend as the park us usually full. During our stay in April 2018, both bath-houses were closed for renovation. It seemed odd they decided to close both at the same time, but that's the current state of things. This resulted in a 30% discount, which was a great deal for us, but if you're tent-camping, you may want to wait for the renovations to be completed. As mentioned in other reviews, the one big drawback of this park is that getting to it requires you navigate some narrow roads with overhanging limbs. This did not present a problem for us. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Driving a 45' motorhome with a 13'6" clearance to this park is gut wrenching. The trees outside the park, on approach roads are not trimmed and we drug through many areas. No choice but to drive very slow and use all the road in many places. Lots of horns and the finger. Family in a travel trailer were depending on the restroom/showers. What park manager closes both bathhouses in the campground for renovations at the same time? Just idiotic. Otherwise, the park is beautiful. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.
