Chester State Park is a beautiful, small campground. The grounds and roads are very well maintained, and the sites are clean. Sadly, there are only 3 sites with an open view to the lake (which is 50+ yards or more away)... which means that if anyone wants to spend time at the lake (which is everyone), they have to cut through the areas around those 3 sites to get to it. This doesn't seem like it would be an issue, as there are several ways to get around the sites without cutting right through someone else's campsite, but it seems that cutting through an actual site is the way most people made their way down there. Basically, there's not much respect for "personal space". We didn't really have an issue with this, and still found the trip to be very relaxing (even with the distance to the lake, the view was amazing), but if you are more of a private person, this may be annoying to you. Another nice feature is that this park has a disc golf course, but you need to be a bit better than a beginner to really enjoy it (we are beginners). The course is cut out nicely, but it's still like hiking and the "rough" is really rough, so losing your disc in the woods can result in a lot of brier cuts and scrapes. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There's not a lot going on in Chester, but there is a Walmart about 7 miles away if you need anything. Kayak & canoe rentals at the park office & 2 disc golf courses within the park.

Site was very nice for one without sewer hook-ups. Electric was stable and good. Water pressure was a little low for us to take showers. One of the toilets in the men's bathroom was broken loose from the floor and appeared to have been that way for a long time. My wife told me that there was two toilets in the women's bathroom that were broken the same way. The main problems that we had was with the enforcement of their pet policies. We kept our small dog on a 6' leash as the rules stated, but there were several other campers that just let their dogs run loose with nothing restricting their movements. One of the campers had a very large dog that was on about a 20' rope and when we went by that campsite I thought the dog was going to break the rope until the owner had to grab the dog and physically restrain him. Also there were several sites where the dogs were tied out to a tree, or the camper, and allowed to stay there. I thought that you were not supposed to do that. We tried to be very careful of the other camper's sites when we were walking but I noticed that some of the other campers did not care and would just walk through any of the sites that they wanted to. I also noticed several sites that had at least three or more vehicles parked at the site. Most of these sites are small and barely able to have one vehicle parked much less 3 or 4 vehicles. We also noticed that some of the vehicles were driving very fast through the campgrounds even though there was a 5 mph speed limit. This could be a great place to camp if the camp host or the rangers would monitor the campers and make them obey the rules. Why have rules if you are not going to enforce them? We will not be staying at Chester State Park again until they start making everyone go by the rules. We camped at Chester State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Several antiques store in downtown Chester. There was a great restaurant in downtown Chester on main street. I think that it was "Gene's" but not sure. The food and service was great and prices were reasonable.

Chester State Park is a frequent camping destination for us.

>They recently upgraded all of the sites with 50 amp service! Yay! Hopefully sewer will come with a future upgrade.<

The park is generally pretty quiet and a great place for a relaxing weekend getaway for us.

The campsites are well kept. The grills and campfire rings have also recently been upgraded at each site.

I cannot comment on the restroom and shower facilities as we do not ever use them.

The children's playground is located in the park's main picnic and recreation area, which is away from the campground. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Chester has a few restaurants, but best to visit the local grocery stores and do your own cooking for the weekend.

Small campground of only about 25 sites but nice quiet campground. Located on a 100 acre lake but only a few of the sites are actually near the lake. Several nice picnic shelters and a few hiking trails. Otherwise not much to do but a nice campground to spend a relaxing weekend, especially being only a 30 minute drive from our house. Small bath house with 2 showers that was very clean. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a small state park. It only has 25 campsites. We found the restrooms were clean as well as the showers. There is a small lake of about 100 acres that's great for boating and fishing. There are hiking trails around the lake and there are several playgrounds for children. The campsites were well-maintained. The roads were hard packed sand and gravel as were the camping pads. Some of the pads were not level but we're advertised as being level. OTA TV had spotty reception, but Verizon data was 3-4 bars. A nice state park just to get away to and get some quiet time, we'll be back. We camped at Chester State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed 2 nights in this small 25 site campground. The campground is kept up very well by the camp host and park staff. The grass is cut and everything is very well kept (as is the rest of the park). Even though I didn't use the showers or restrooms, I checked them out and found them clean and well kept even though the facilities are a bit old. It is a quiet campground, but if you came to just relax, this is the place. The large 100 acre lake is just down the hill for fishing off the dock. There are paths for hiking around the lake and also boats that can be rented by the half day for $10. The SC parks service has a great reservation system that makes reserving a space easy and quick. We will definitely be back! We camped at Chester State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice small state park. You get here by weaseling through some housing areas. I was here Christmas Eve. There was no staff available when I arrived. The entrance gave the day use rates, but didn't show the camping rates. Adequate spacing between sites, good trees. The sites are a bit small. If you have a toad, might be tight on big rigs. Wouldn't bring an RV over 32 feet here. Rest rooms were surprisingly clean. Verizon Air Card and Wireless Land line worked well here. Good TV reception via antenna, good selection of channels. We camped at Chester State Park in a Motorhome.

Clean, small park State park. Few spots on the lake. We did rent a small row boat from the State park for $10/4 hours and the kids caught a small crappie. Nice quiet older campground but well maintained. Restrooms appeared to be cleaned twice daily. Nice family atmosphere if you want something peaceful. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This park is a hidden gem. We were reluctant to try this park before we went, but once we arrived it was a lot better than we expected. The sites were all nice and sandy. Most were very level. The site we were in was such that all we had to do was unhook. This park is for those who do not need a lot of amenities to have a good time. It has good hiking trails, a lake for fishing, and if you walk the trail or drive to the other side of the park they have a nice playground for the children. It is a nice place to just sit back relax and enjoy nature. The only negatives about this park that we had were trains that ran in the near distance from about 7am until midnight. Not bad or too close but still noticable We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Quiet campground. Sites are too close together for you to have any privacy. Bathrooms were the nastiest I have ever seen in a campground. Streaks of mold in toilets, bugs piled up in the corners of the floors and ceilings. Obviously no one has done a cleaning in a very long time. Very few sites for 30-35 foot campers. We camped at Chester State Park in a Motorhome.

A very nice quiet campground. Road and sites are gravel and reasonably level. A good number of trees for shade, but no undergrowth for privacy. Sites are of adequate size and spacing. Campground is next to a very pretty lake with a nice nature trail around it. Park has few amenities, but if you just want a good place to go and camp for a few days, this is a good place. Very relaxing. We'll be back. We camped at Chester State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Nice quiet park, nice stocked lake and large spacious lots. Not a lot to do at park and in the town but State park is good for some real camping. I'm originally from Chester-hate the place but parents decided to return so we camp at the State park two to three times a year. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Chester is a great state park for a quiet weekend getaway. We go to Chester because it's fairly close to where we live, but far enough away from home that we feel like we've gone somewhere. My partner does college coursework via the internet and we can get a good signal at this campground with our Verizon phones. He gets lots of school work done and I get to build campfires, cook steaks and nap alot. It's a great place to go in the winter months because it's so very quiet. In fact, we've gone the past two New Years in a row. In the summer, there are lots of families with small kids. The washrooms are generally clean. The sites vary in sizes and ease of getting parked. The park is a bit short on amenities. There is a stocked lake provided you fish from the bank or from a non-powered boat. No swimming. Archery Range. Big softball field. Plenty of large picnic shelters. Reservations are even easier now that they use Reserve America. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Not many campsites, but nicely spread out. Lots of tall pine trees. Unpaved, but level. There wasn't a lot to the park, but they did have 2 large fields which would be nice for group activities, and picnic shelters and an archery course. It's located on a large pond, but the campsites aren't really on the water. Overall, a nice little campground. We spent one day at Carowinds, which was about 30-45 minutes away. Would stay there again. We camped at Chester State Park in a Travel Trailer.
