We spent two weeks in this park. There are so many choices of places to stay in the Black Hills, we were not quite sure what to expect with this choice. As noted in prior reviews, the sites tended to be unlevel. It is also in a canyon and the cell service is limited. The wifi was wiped out by a thunderstorm while we were there ( certainly not their fault). That said, we had a lovely end site, pull through that offered quiet views and bunnies that were quite friendly. Difficulty with satellite due to the trees, but we managed. Staff could not have been more friendly and helpful, particularly with information on activities in the area. We would most certainly return to this park. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Custer is a small picturesque town. Close proximity to Crazy Horse Monument and Mt. Rushmore. Custer State Park is a must see and we also enjoyed the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs. So much to do here.

This is a lovely setting for a park and our site was beautiful. The park had been hit by lightning so all the wifi was out and only available at the office. The bathrooms are also only at the office. The problem is the office is about 1/4 mile uphill walk from the lower level sites and the pool is distant as well and this was a problem for us. I don't fault the park for the loss of wifi...though we should have been offered a discount, but there is no cell phone data in the park either so this was a real problem for us. Throwing out the garbage was the same hike. Cable was fine but VERY limited in channels.

We'd stay here again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

You can get anything you need in the town of Custer and it is just three more miles into the park which is as good or better than most National Parks! Do not miss it!

Drive or rent a car to see BOTH the Wildlife Loop in Custer AND do the Needles loop which is stunning.

Good pie at the PURPLE PIE HOUSE...between town and the park.

Rate is based on 6 day stay during peak period (Sturgis motorcycle rally). Verizon worked okay. Sprint Mifi had zero reception. Park wifi worked well at certain times of day and not-so-well during others (our site was close to the office and I think that helped). We were able to obtain DirecTV signal at our site, but there are lots of trees so I imagine not all sites are satellite friendly. Water pressure was fine. Easy and efficient reservation and check-in process. Friendly staff. All hook-ups worked perfectly. We had rain while we were here and did not experience mud or puddling (could be site dependent).

Another reviewer commented on the park being uncomfortably hilly for big rigs. Understandably everyone has their individual comfort zone. The park IS somewhat hilly but my hubby (for what it's worth) didn't feel it was so hilly as to make him uncomfortable. Our rig is 41". I just wanted to mention to provide another point of view.

It's a beautiful, clean park with lots of trees. Very kid-friendly including free bikes of every size, pool, pool-slide (extra cost) and playground. The location is perfect for all area attractions including downtown Custer (gas stations, grocery store, restaurants, etc). We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Allow plenty of time for Custer State Park: several days if possible. It's beautiful!! Pack lunch/snacks/water and various shoes/clothes for walking/hiking/swimming so you have max flexibility. Bring hat, sunscreen, cool weather and rain gear. Also fill your gas tank in Custer before exploring. There is a short hike from downtown Custer that offers a pretty view at the top (start in park by train car). Crazy Horse is overrated and overpriced.

Not sure how to rate this resort. Pros: close to Custer and central to local activities. Shower/restrooms adequate & laundry good, but pricey ($2.00/load). Staff helpful and friendly. Con: Our site was not level, plus had a sharp left turn, downhill with slope to the right. Questioned owner about it, assured me there would be no problem. There wasn't, but it was not comfortable. Site was not level. In general, the resort was kid friendly, but there is a daily rate for the water slide. Internet was very poor, cable was good. The roads & site are dirt/gravel with the roads mostly dirt and bumpy. In my opinion, the resort needs some TLC. We would consider camping there again, but would look at other resorts before deciding. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

First off: the service was fantastic. We had to arrive a day early and were given a site that we had to move out of the next day. We wanted to get an early start but had to wait for the new site to open up. The campground said most people leave very early. Unfortunitly our site did not, but the staff was overly apoligetic. A nice change sometimes.

The campground could use much more gravel as we had heavy rains which created a lot of mud. Our site was plenty long so we were able to position ourselves pretty level. I could see where others might have trouble. All the services worked fine even the wifi.

We picked the park because of location to the 3 National Parks and services offered. We were not disappointed. We would stay again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice place to stay just outside Custer. Looks great for families with pool, slide. Main area is trees - we were in a more open area down the hill so got sat TV easily. Wifi, not so much. Grassy area with picnic table. A thunder boomer had just moved through with lots of rain and some hail so a little wet and muddy. Great roof top bar in downtown Custer, but not advertised much. We saw it from the street. Had a great pizza, just can't remember the name. Enjoyed the stay and would stay there again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

As stated in other reviews, there is lots to do in this area. Don't miss the 2 loops you can take through Custer SP - north through the Needles - stop at Hill City or Keystone and shop and have lunch or dinner; and South on a wildlife loop. Of course Mt Rushmore is great. Have the raspberry/vanilla swirl cone! Loop out through the Badlands NP, Wall and Rapid City. You will be glad you did. Lots more we would do if we came back.

Very spacious lots with trees, which is uncommon in this area. WiFi is very weak and did not work. Early morning noise from house being built next door. Trash overflowing. Be aware there are no car rental agencies in Custer. Car rentals and most attractions are 50 miles north in Rapid City. DO NOT rent their car. Broke down on us and previous renters. Incident handled poorly by owners. We never heard an apology. Car has 120,000 miles on, it and repairs are made by owners, not a mechanic. Nice spot if you just use the space and don't need to deal with the owners. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Site wasn't very level, Wifi was intermittant, even at the hot spot near the office. Cell phone service was the same. We had stayed here a few years ago and the service and upkeep has gone downhill in that time. Convenience to Custer is a plus but will look for another place next time. Not quite the busy season yet but emailed our request for a site for a few nights. Arrived and was greeted by friendly, courteous, outgoing staff in office. We booked in for 4 nights.

One thing I can say about Beaver Lake is if I was ever going to own an RV resort/campground, I would want it to be just like Beaver Lake.

Sites are level even tho park is in undulating terrain. Services were grouped together in the middle of our site, not spread out like we have seen elsewhere.

Cable was great - just remember most stations are 1 hr ahead. Fooled us a couple of times.

Wifi was excellent, but not many in the park in early-mid May. Streaming is not permitted, but searches and email (standard stuff) work very nicely. I was able to easily keep our blog updated.

Washrooms were clean. Laundry has 5 washers and 6 dryers - look new.

I was told owners have had the park for 15 years and over time have improved the park. This is evident.

Do yourself a favor and stay here for your visit. You won't regret it. We sure didn't and we will stay here again if we're in this neck of the woods again.

Thanks very much for a really nice stay. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Most of the sites are terraced, which is nice. Utilities are all grouped together. Cable included basic channels. Could not get satellite reception. The Wi-Fi was very spotty at best. Laundry room is clean, several newer machines and reasonably priced.
The owners and staff are always working around the campground. We were escorted to our site at check-in.

There is a pool and waterslide, and they have propane available.

Custer is a central location to see all the local sites. Nice little town that is not too commercialized. Fabulous chicken pot pie at Bobkats Purple Pie Place. Excellent desserts at Dakota Cowboy restaurant.
Would definitely stay again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Visited Custer in 2011 and stayed here. We came back this year for a 2 week stay and decided on Beaver Lake from our past experience. Campground was in good condition overall. Considering the landscape the sites are all relatively level as I did not see people having to do much side to side adjustment. Wifi can be spotty depending on the time of day and how many users are connected and cell signals in the mountains are always flaky. If we had something we needed a cell signal for we would just walk to the top of the hill and it was fine. Overall I would chose to stay here again as the need to be connected does not outweigh the pleasant atmosphere at this campground. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in a 38' motorhome with tow dolly and toad. Sites were supposed to be 40'x60' but I think they were more like 25'x45'. There was no room for our toad anywhere near the motorhome. We had to park the car at the top of a hill near the office. They put us in one site and the next day we had to move. No reason was given. Still, this was not a big rig site. Internet security blocked many websites that were considered "gambling". These were normal everyday sites anyone might visit for information. The personnel at the office did not seem to be very knowledgeable. They had no knowledge of why we were moved or why internet security prevented many sites. I do research on family history and was prevented from doing so at this campground, i.e. Ancestry and LDS websites were considered gambling sites and blocked. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.
