This was a convenient family-run RV campground, about 3-miles west of Custer. Interior gravel roads & sites, 80 foot level sites with wide grass area between coaches. Mix of cabins (including at least 1 Teepee) & RV sites. Some sites able to get DirecTV, all or most had full service, etc. Rate w discount: $43.20/nite. Free bikes for kids, clean, convenient showers & restrooms. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beaver Lake CG just west of Custer, SD. Very roomy and staff are excellent. Swimming pool, water slide, fire ring, they have Bicycles you can borrow for free. Easy in and easy out. Restrooms are clean and general store is well stocked. I never seen such large Pull-throughs. Although the Campground is very hilly, the sites are level and spacious. They accommodate campers that want to face each other and Camper that want tents on their sites with them. Before we left, this CG became my favorite of all time. Keep in mind, the roads are all gravel but that's what makes it a true Campground. We will be back! We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Oh course Mount Rushmore but don't forget Crazy Horse Memorial and be sure to go for the laser show and night. I would recommend visiting Hill City and be sure to take the 1880's train round trip to Keystone, SD. We had dinner at the Cafe in Hill City great food. There are several scenic drives that I would recommend but don't take anything larger then a 3500 Dually and you better now how to drive it because one of the tunnels is only 8'3" wide but I got through and never hit my truck.

Friendly staff, kind of a Mountain Man place, 3 escort guys sitting on the office porch. Our escort had to walk because his cart died. Short walk and sites are gravel and sloped. No problem leveling the 5er. Very treed setting and quite. It was cool and raining for our stay so no pool time. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Beaver Lake is pretty average. The sites are gravel, ours was very uneven. The park is in need of some TLC, the grass was so long it nearly covered my shoes in some places. Bathrooms were clean, but in need of updating. Apparently dogs are not required to be leashed because they were running loose and I didn't see anything in their rules that required it. The was of a concern to us because we have a small dog and we didn't want him to be rushed by strange dog. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park has more of a campground feel rather than the traditional "parking lot for RVs" type of RV park. Plenty of tall, mature trees give good shade. Spacing between sites are still close, but a small patch of grass gives the feeling of having a little personal space. The park has natural hills and terrain, which is also a departure form the normal flat, single grade RV park. The sites were graded and level, and water pressure was good. Good clean 50 amp power, no issues. Sites have standard threaded sewer connections. Each site had a fire pit and picnic table. The interior roads are easily navigable with large rigs. The Town of Custer is just a 3 minute drive to the east for shopping, groceries, liquor, etc. Easy access into Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Custer S.P., Badlands N.P., Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon are all excellent day trips. Make sure you drive the Needles Highway in both directions, but be forewarned, this is NOT for large vehicles as there are several narrow tunnels. The lighting ceremony at night at Mt. Rushmore gives a different perspective. Devils Tower is only about a 2.5 hour drive into Wyoming.

Great place for a family stay. A little hilly which is nice for scenery, but makes sites a little less level and some are awkward to back into across slopes and making sure not to drag hitches and such. Fun pool and water slide. Close to highway but didn't notice noise. Well kept, lots of camp hosts. 42' class A plus toad fit easily. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Office staff courteous and friendly which is where it ended. Escort to site was unpleasant experience. Along the way, the person would stop to chat and did not indicate if we were to follow or wait for his conversation to end and then continue the way we were heading or turn. It seems we were led up an down every row in the park to get to our site. After getting to site, we noticed it would have taken only one turn to get to where we needed to be. Some sites were cleaner than others, but that would be the camper's responsibility to keep a site tidy when occupied. All hookups worked as expected and able to level after a few tries. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

SDCampowneroperator, owner at Beaver Lake Campground responded to this review

Dear Never Lost,
Thank you for your review. We fail to understand your concern with our complimentary escort, as we do know all the best ways to every site with every type of unit. If there were a shorter way, perhaps our escort staff felt it might be difficult on turns with your unit or to protect our grass from unneccessary traffic.
Level sites is an issue we deal with. We strive to level our sites as much as possible while allowing for drainage from our frequent thunderstorms. We can level front to rear, or side to side, not both. Flat is muddy. In our experience, a site is best leveled side to side, low at the rear, for stability for trailers, keeping class A MHs steps low and class Cs level which are frequently low in front due to their build on a truck chassis.
I apologise for the help, friendliness and knowledge of our staff which delayed you somewhat getting to your site.
Please respond by email which site you had so that we can correct the issues

The staff is so friendly here, I really wanted to like this campground. And it was okay, a lot of green space around, places to run the dogs including a fenced dog park. But it appeared just a little run down, a lot of litter around and their free bicycles were abandoned all over the campground. The laundry and showers are pretty clean but they should pop for new shower curtains, very moldy. The showers are tiny but there is a bench and a shower caddy for your things. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The breakfast specials at Our Place in Custer are dirt cheap and very tasty. Get to Mount Rushmore early - really. We thought it would not be crowded on a very rainy day but it was. We arrived at 7:30 and it was fine but jammed when we left a couple hours later.

Check in was fast and friendly, they even knew my name when I walked in. If you prefer a sunny site ask for sites L thru P. Hookups where conveniently located. Showers were rather small but clean, the shower in my 5th wheel is larger. Our site was larger than most or the others but privacy was not great as the campground road circled our site. When we return we will definitely stay here again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Third time we have stayed here. We stayed in site F which was level and large with plenty of room for our 42' 5th wheel and DRW truck. Staff was always friendly and helpful. Great utilities and placement. Good water pressure. Our site had no shade which we preferred. Others had a little to a lot of shade. Site long enough for our 36' motorhome and truck with extra room. Wifi worked great. Front end was a little low but it is in the Black Hills. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Nice campground located a few miles outside of Custer. We stayed here 4 days while visiting the southern Black Hills. WiFi in the park was great (they had just upgraded their service). Water was the best we have ever had in a campground. Verizon and ATT service was very spotty in campground. Utilities worked well and were located conveniently at site. Make sure to drive the Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway: two of the most scenic drives in the USA. Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorial are close. Visit Custer State Park: see movie at Visitor's Center and drive the Wildlife Loop. We got a lot of information about the area by going by the Visitor's Center in the town of Custer.

We paid $46 for the first couple days as that was on season. The last two days we were off season and paid somewhat less. Beautiful, well kept grounds, sites are mostly level where we stayed (by the office). We had great WiFi as well: but no streaming video, appears to be blocked. Wifi may not be strong, or even available, elsewhere in the park. They do have free cable TV, so plan accordingly.

Friendly and helpful staff, that assisted with backing us in. Laundry was great; one of the machines was out of order but was fixed by the next day. We saw several examples of the staff hopping right on to repairs, which probably explains why it is so well maintained. Bathrooms, showers and laundry were very clean. Only aluminum recycling. At the site we had (back in) the utilities were near the front so we had to use 30 ft of sewer hose. I carry a 50 ft fresh water hose, so no problem there.

The rental car is a great convenience, it is a 2009 Dodge Caravan in pretty good shape. Other than being a bit bigger than our regular cars, it performed well going through Custer State Park, up the Iron Mountain Road to Mt. Rushmore, down to Hot Springs, etc. An annual pass to Mt. Rushmore and Custer SP is included and saves you $11 at Rushmore and $20 at Custer.

They have a 10% discount for Good Sam members, seniors 65 & over, FMCA members, or persons with an active or retired Military ID. All in all, there might be better campgrounds in this area, but we will definitely make this one our first choice whenever we come back to the Black Hills. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Motorhome.
