Stayed here mainly because not a large number of other camps were open. We only needed a couple of nights but the biggest problem for us was absolutely no Verizon cell coverage. If u do not mind this, then it is ok. The park is large rolling in trees but plenty of access. There are lots of different types of sites and the staff are helpful at allowing you to pick where u want to be. The wifi was not good but i never count on wifi. The location is just outside Custer but on the main road with no road noise. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Blank8, owner at Big Pine Campground responded to this review

Since we have received no response from RV Park Reviews regarding this review, we feel compelled to respond. We do not believe that you camped at Big Pine Campground in Custer, SD as we were not open in April 2017. Our opening day every year is May 20th. Also, AT&T & Verizon customers will get reception in our campground. We are sorry for any confusion this may cause to future Big Pine campers.

Overall Rating:

One of the best camping experiences we've had in our five years of travelling. Beyond the typical amenities, Big Pines offers a quiet, secluded forest atmosphere and is close to many great sites and activities in the South Dakota Black Hills area.

Owners take great pride and work very hard to make sure your camping experience is the very best it can be. Reservations were easy, informative and we were able to request a specific site. Check-in was fast and painless and staff escorted us to our site, ensured we were level with room for our four slide-outs and access to utilities. He even suggested the best location for our satellite and delivered firewood to our site within minutes of purchasing it at the office.

Sites are spacious and strategically located beneath Ponderosa pines with plenty of room between. Sites are gravel, mostly level with well-placed 20-30-50 amp utilities, a fire pit, picnic table, good water pressure and excellent Wifi available from 4 separate locations within the park. Even though no cable was available, it wasn't missed with so much to do in and around the Black Hills area.

Although we didn't use the restrooms, we did check them out and found them to be immaculate. The laundry room was clean and spacious with 4 washers and dryers, tables for folding and racks for hanging clothes. The park also provides a video game room, small library and 2 separate play areas for small children.

All of these features were great, but the personal care and attention of the owners made our stay truly a pleasure. We will be back for sure!! We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Operated by a young couple who don't stop working at making your stay the best. Sites are big rig friendly, 50 amps, good water pressure and allow campfires. Only negative is there are only three television channels available, but that is true for all campgrounds around that location. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here for 5 nights while visiting the Custer area. Could have easily stayed longer as there are many things to see and do in this area. The owners were very friendly and helpful with things to see and do in the area. This campground has a lot of trees and that makes it really nice. You are not sitting out in an open field or lot somewhere. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is a great campground. The only negative are the tight roads but then again it's on the side of a big hill (mountain???). By a busy highway so some road noise. Away from heavy tourists area so enjoyed the natural outdoor atmosphere. Owners super nice and attentive. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

One of the finest campgrounds I have had the pleasure to stay in. Staff was extremely helpful. Store was well stocked. Sites were level and spacious. Bathrooms/showers were clean. Good shade all day because of numerous pine trees. Campground is in a good location for day trips to Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave, Custer State Park, and lots of other attractions. I will definitely be back! We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Motorhome.

Have to agree with others that this is a very nice park and owners are so friendly. We stayed a week and the 7th night was free. Park is on a hill and not all sites appear to be easy to get into or out of with a "big" rig but the owner does park you. We requested a site where we could get satellite with our Tailgater and we were able to get 2 (110 & 119)of the 3 satellites (129 which provides many of the Dish HD channels we could not get and talking to neighbor neither could they.) Sites are dirt and gravel and our site was level . Wi-Fi and power were good. On one side our view looked out to a hillside and on the other side we looked out on only part of our neighbor's RV and a nice tree filled section of campground that was never used during our stay. The laundry has 4 washers and dryers, racks to hang clothes and 2 folding tables and it and the bathroom were very clean. There is a game room with video games and a small library. If we were in the area again we would stay here. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We missed the entrance to the campground because Big Pine Road is not marked. The campground is located off a side road and there is no directional sign from the highway. Our GPS indicated the entrance was located off the highway.

This is an old school, throwback sort of park, and I like it. It's situated on a hill in the middle of a pine forest. The roads are narrow, gravel, and twisty. I would think it might be difficult to maneuver in a big rig, but there were plenty of them around us so I guess it's workable. The manager will lead you to your site and help you back in if you need him to. There are sites right down by the office, along the road up the hill, and then in a loop around the top of the hill. The sites are gravel and vary in size but most are quite long. The space between the sites also varies but most of them are widely spaced and offer a lot of privacy. There is plenty of shade from all the big trees, which could be a problem for those of you who use satellite dishes. I didn't ask, but I don't think there's cable. There are two large restroom/shower rooms, one at the bottom of the hill and one in the top loop, but there are also two other small buildings with just toilets. We used the one at the top of the hill and it was very clean. The showers consist of an average size tile shower stall with a shower caddy hanging on the shower head so that you don't have to have all your shower products laying on the floor. I really appreciate that! The water pressure was good and there was plenty of hot water. There is a shower curtain and then a good sized changing area with a bench along the wall and lots of hooks for your towel, clean clothes, etc. Again, a feature I really appreciate! This is probably the quietest RV park we've been too after six months on the road. The sites down at the bottom of the hill on the road probably get road noise, but at the top of the hill, nothing. No trains, planes, or automobiles! And their wi-fi worked really well most of the time. Verizon service was two to three bars. And it's conveniently close to town. What more could you want? I would definitely come back again, and probably will. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

The Needles highway is a must see if you love amazing rock formations. BUT, you can only do it in a small vehicle. Our full size dual wheel pickup barely made it through the small tunnels. And if you love wildlife, definitely spend time on the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop. We saw lots of bison, pronghorns, prairie dogs, burros who go right up to you car window and beg for food, and a few deer and big horn sheep.

Beautiful rustic, scenic park set in a picturesque area. Wonderful, friendly, knowledgable owners/staff. Definitely a destination park, close to everything (Mt. Rushmore, Town of Custer, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, etc.). WiFi was exceptional, and we were in the far end of the park. TV was non-existent, but we utilized WiFi to solve that issue. Would definitely stay again. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Big Pine is the kind of place you have in mind when you go camping. Nice people, great sites in the trees and quiet. Some of the sites provide more space and shade than others so you may want to Google Maps before making reservations. Our site had FHU and the connections were all where they were supposed to be. Firewood was $4 per bundle and they delivered. Nice laundry facility, $2.00 to wash and $.75 to dry for 30 minutes. Convenient to Custer, Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore. A great price for a great place. We camped at Big Pine Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
