The company running Custer State Park campsites (and lodging - I believe it's all the same), do a great job. FYI: the campgrounds at Custer are the only SD state park campsites you can reserve 1 year in advance. The sooner the better if you plan to go! Although, we were so surprised to see empty sites through our 4th of July stay this year. We simply couldn't figure out why that was.

Look below for the great reviewer that gives tips on best sites. I agree: those are the good ones! However, all sites are really quite decent and hard to imagine being disappointed.

Benefits to Game Lodge is it's location at the Eastern entrance to Park. Wildlife loop right there, a 2 mile paved trail from park to Game Lodge store, visitor center.

This campground also has the dump station if you need it. There are not mosquitoes but a few biting flies when we were here. We found Picardin insect spray to be effective.

Laundry convenient, bath building are awesome, well lit, clean, good water and pressure.

Between the great campground and the appeal of Custer State Park, this is a great destination!!! Any Custer campground is nice so take your pick and just go! We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here 5 nights and found the campground to be a wonderful base for touring the Black Hills and out to Badlands. The hosts and staff were friendly and helpful. The one-way road layout was a little odd making backing in to our site challenging. We just defied the one-way and made it easier on ourselves (with the blessing of the host). We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This was an excellent state park. Location of the Game Lodge was convenient to Mt. Rushmore. We saw many wildlife throughout the park (Buffalo right in our campground!) So we did not see the need to pay money to go on the Wildlife loop. Sites were spacious and neighbors were friendly. There was no water nearby, which we did not notice until after we had unhooked. Ugh! Rookie mistake. Laundry facilities were very convenient and the bath house was clean and well maintained. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There were activities planned in and around the park- but we just followed our own plans. The Park was over an hour drive to Sioux City and also to Hot Springs, but the Hot Springs drive was scenic and we enjoyed seeing many wildlife on that trip. We did spend a day at Evan's Plunge natural hot spring waterpark and that was a fun day for the kids. Our family enjoyed spending the day at Sylvan lake where we hiked, fished and kayaked. We also enjoyed Needles highway.

Only negatives we had about the park was having to pay an entrance fee on top of a camping fee and no water hookups. Our home state does not charge an additional fee: if you're camping, the entrance fee is waived. Also not sure why water is not at each site. Other than that, it was great. Lots of wildlife and great roads to travel. Convenient to many activities. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

We loved this campground....very close to nature. Bison or deer grazed in the pasture adjacent to the campground most of the evenings (there is a fence which keeps them out of the campground). We stayed here almost two weeks. The Wildlife Loop starts right around the corner of the campground entrance. The new Visitor Center is right across the highway. Within a mile from the Coolidge General Store and historic Game Lodge. (The General Store is very, very expensive so stock up before getting there.) The campsites are very spacious and angled in such a way that you feel you have some space from your neighbor. Sites on the north perimeter were pretty much full sun. Sites on the south perimeter sit next to Grace Coolidge Creek. We thought Site 26E was beautiful, very private, right on the edge of the creek. Sites 24E and 2E were especially nice. Even though the campground is off Hwy 16A, we really didn't hear much road noise (maybe because we were very early in the season...may be noisier in summer). The bathrooms/showers were very clean and well lit. The laundry room was closed. It was 13 miles into Custer to do laundry. We loved that we were allowed to gather firewood through the park and burn it at the campsite. The campground was well patrolled by rangers. The campground drained well even after heavy rainfall. We saw lots of campers fishing in the creek and lake within the campground. We looked at 3 of the private campgrounds in Custer proper, and we wouldn't have traded full hookups for this up close view of the State Park and it's beautiful wildlife. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We enjoyed the hike (Trail #9) to the top of Harney Peak leaving from Sylvan Lake, fabulous burgers at Black Hills Burger & Bun, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. We drove the Wildlife Loop and Needles Highway several times. The George Mickelson trail was wonderful for bike riding. We got on the trailhead right across the street from the downtown Custer Visitor Center. We also drove one day to the Mickelson trailhead in Mystic and biked through the old railway tunnels.

This campground is a must if you plan to stay in Custer State Park. We saw so many deer and bison and even a herd of 90 elk just minutes away from the campground. The showers had just opened for the season. The women's were excellent, but my husband said the men's showers were luke warm at best (which didn't help warm him up from the 20 degree temps outside). But that is honestly our only complaint. The park was clean, the sites are wonderful, the restroom facilities clean and the park itself is great! We will be back!

Lot spacing was spacious/nearby with mostly shady exposure. Site surface was a concrete pad featuring a fire ring and picnic table. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Truck Camper.

The price indicated does not include a $15 entrance fee that is valid 1-7 days. This is a wonderful campground for exploring Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, and viewing wildlife. The sites are spaced apart and staggered so you aren't looking right in your neighbor's window. Several sites are by the creek and shaded, and the rest have little to no shade. The one way road signs are strange. You either have to back up a long road to get to your site or ignore the one way road signs (which we did). I imagine it could be crazy during the busy season. The downsides? It was quite noisy starting about 8:00am as they are constructing a new visitor center and bike/walk path. Just bad timing on our part. Most of the sites are VERY unlevel especially front to back but also side to side. Easier to level for 5th wheels and trailers - we never could get level in our motorhome and satisfied ourselves with "close". The worse part for us (again probably bad timing) was the bugs! There were stink bugs, bees, flies, and other bugs we couldn't identify, and they all wanted to be inside. At one point, we counted 65 stink bugs on the outside of the motorhome. We would return but would be more picky about the site and whether it was bug season. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Great campsite sitting along a creek in Custer State Park. Very accommodating for all camper types with tent camping, non-electric sites, electric, and cabins available. The sites are generally large with the sites closer to the creek providing more shade. The proximity of the campground to the lodge and the museum in the park make it a convenient location. A bike path connects the different amenities. Reservations can be placed up to one year in advance. Any campground is a compromise, but game lodge is my first 10 rating. Custer State Park is a wonderful park with wild game, beautiful hiking trails, and great motorcycling roads. Game Lodge campground is in a convenient location on the east side of the park. The campground has a variety of sites, some full sun, mostly partly shaded and a few in full shade. We were in site 32 in full shade with our 31' Toy Hauler. One prime site is #28 which is mostly shaded and along the small creek. For larger RV's I recommend sites 4, 6, and 20. Tenters would enjoy sites 30 31, 37, 41, and 43 which adjoin the creek. There is one pull thru #40. Restrooms and showers were clean and nice to use. Evening programs in the barn in the campground are enjoyable. There is so much to do in the area that we weren't able to do it all in 6 days. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

For a great hike, take trail #9 to Harney Peak. It is a 7 mile round trip with 1,000 feel of incline. The views from the hiking trail and the CCC built tower at the peak are fantastic. Alpine Inn in Hill City is great for lunch or dinner. Great pie at the Purple Pie Place in Custer. Wind Cave National Park has very interesting cave tours.

We stayed at the Game Lodge Campground in Custer State Park for a week in June 2015. We found the sites to be level and spacious. All concrete pads with grass lawns that include picnic table and fire ring. Most sites had ample shade. The Campground Hosts came by after we were setup to ensure that we were ok and didn't need anything. Making reservations was fairly painless. We were in the handicap site at site 3E next to the shower house. I was afraid that the foot traffic to the bathhouse would be troublesome, but we did not even notice for the most part. The sites all have 50/30 amp electric, but no water for dump on the site. There is potable water and a dump site in the campground. Highly recommend this campsite if visiting the black hills / mt. rushmore areas. AT&T cell phones worked great, both voice and data. Sprint phones do not work for the most part. Sprint phones can roam, but little or no data. No wifi service in the campground. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Incredible state park. Game Lodge is one of many campground choices. It's the farthest east, at the head of the Wildlife Loop for bison, burros, etc, and close to scenic drive to Mount Rushmore. A pond, but no lake like Sylvan and Legion. Drove past Sylvan, which seemed far busier. Drove the short distance to Legion Lake for a long afternoon of swimming. Blue Bell seemed to have more, like the stables. Game Lodge campground is gorgeous, with a mountain backdrop and stream adding to the natural sounds. The barn with nightly ranger programs / events is nice. A good bike trail connects it to the actual Game Lodge (an easy walk and good spot to stop) and Coolidge Campground (smaller). We were in 32, a great shady spot. 28 is the best electric site, with fire ring and picnic table on the stream and lots of privacy. Most sites on stream are tent only, but 35 had a trailer in it. North and east side of campground is open, south and west shaded. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed 2 nights in August at the Game Lodge Campground, site 147, in a 36' motorhome. This site is on the creek that runs through the property - camping cabin on one side, tent sites on the other side. It wasn't as level as other sites we saw but was definitely doable. The bathrooms and showers were very clean with hot water showers (free). Dump station on-site was convenient, fresh water was available also. During our stay there were nightly Ranger programs about local wildlife in the theater which is a barn within the campground. Well worth walking over for these. We will definitely stay at this campground again when in the area. Easy access from either the East or West (16A), and right at the Eastern entrance to the scenic wildlife loop. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

$28 per night was for a 50 amp electric site on a level asphalt pad in the Game Lodge campground. We purchased the annual park permit for $30 and the towed vehicle was included in the fee. There is water and a dump station within the campground. There was a picnic table and a campfire ring on our spacious site. We used this as our base for exploring the park itself (lots of wildlife around) as well as for visiting the numerous national parks and other attractions within a manageable one-day drive from the park. If you like walking/hiking/biking there are trails and roadways inside and outside the park. The night sky is gorgeous as are the sunsets. The park was very quiet during our stay but I can imagine that during the summer months the noise level goes up. The campground is within driving distance of Rapid City, where every convenience is available. Cell phone service on AT&T is four bars of 4G. Verizon data coverage is was 4G LTE so we used our Millenicom Jetpack for Internet access. There was also free Wi-Fi available at the nearby lodge. There was no over-the-air TV. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.
