We absolutely loved our stay at Custer State Park! We should have booked earlier (I think it was early May when we booked) because we had to change from Grace Coolidge to Game Lodge after 3 nights then finished our stay, 2 nights at Game Lodge. The park offers so much! Wildlife, trails, restaurants, water sports and beauty! We also were able to do trips to Mount Rushmore and Crazy House. It is so clean and beautiful! We had delightful camp hosts. I hope to return again some day. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Great campground. Brushed a few light branches on the entry, otherwise the access was great. Sites were level and well spaced. There is a section along the river mostly for tents, most of the other sites looked big rig friendly. We moved sites because we were not able to have reservations for two nights at one. Both were clean and spacious. The camp host stopped by to check on our "departure" too. Road noise was miminal, occasionally a loud motorcycle but not a problem. Walked to the game lodge and the path continued up to the visitors center. Close to Needles, Rushmore and Crazy Horse too. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Shop before you arrive. Stores are not close. Went to Iron Mt road about 7 am and got caught up in the Bison heard moving up from the gate area. Needles highway is a spectacular drive. Saw a mountain goat at the tunnel entrance.

We were at Custer State Park/Game Lodge with an electric hook-up site. We used the showers, which were clean. The showers also had a steady stream of water. Park hosts were in the area and easy to get in touch with. Our site was clean. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

I had my doubts since no water or sewer, but it is really a very nice campground. There is a convenient fill station and dump station inside the campground so you can get potable water there. Cell phone coverage was very good. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Custer State Park is a great park, more like a national park. Lots of wildlife and we got stuck in a cool bison traffic jam as we drove very slowly in and around 200 bison on the road.

A quiet, clean, very well maintained park in an awesome setting. The sites were well spaced to provide some privacy. Sites and roads are paved. Bathrooms and showers were the cleanest I've encountered. We never were visited by the camp host, but the seasonal maintenance folks came by everyday just to make sure we were doing well. This is an electric only park- no water- but they do provide a portable water hydrant to fill your tanks. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Custer State Park is a beautiful park in it's own right, but the area also offers plenty of outdoor activities. Mount Rushmore, the town of Custer and Crazy Horse Memorial are all nearby. Excellent dining available at the Game Lodge Resort featuring elk, bison and rattlesnake- along with the more pedestrian beef, fish and chicken. I didn't have time to explore the streams, but I understand some excellent fly fishing is nearby in the park.

VERY quiet. Excellent shade that is trimmed back from roads and located next to the start of the animal loop. Accomodations for 40'+ class A coaches is limited but the sites that are large enough are very nice. Site #28 is beside a small brook and is the best spot in park with #27 being next. Access to sites is easy but all appear to be back in. Negatives are some sites are not very level and no sewer or water available. With sewer and water my rating would have been a 9/10. Clean modern restrooms with free showers. Electric only. Good spacing. Site 7 was fully sun exposed but felt very private. Sites are paved but slightly unlevel. Leaves were changing (Sep 23-26) which made the whole area gorgeous. Lots of deer came through park. One way road through the campground and all sites not angled correctly for this so depending on your site you may have to drive wrong way to get your hookup on the correct side. Great location, well cared for and recently updated facility. Only warning is to take caution when leveling, the recently paved sites are deceivingly unlevel. Also, layout of road forces you to drive wrong way on 1 way street to easily back in. Not an issue, just an observation. Awesome place in an awesome park. Huge spaces with amazing views, wildlife and tons of informative programs. Site was newly paved but not level, but long enough for our 38' FW and tow vehicle. Walking distance to the new visitors center, fishing/swimming pond and playground. The only drawback was no sewer or water, but we were fine with that. The location was easy access to nearby attractions (Badlands, Mt Rushmore), plus the Jeep tours and chuckwagon left from the Game Lodge area. The best place to camp to experience the black hills! Beautiful spacious sites with great shade trees and views. Loved the buffalo just outside the fence. Clean showers, clean restrooms. Even the pit toilets were spotless. Wish we had stayed here for our entire stay instead of moving to a private campground for the last half of our stay. Park staff were quick to remove tree limbs after a wind storm. I can't recommend this place enough!! We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Book a site early in the year as this park is very busy. Beautiful area. In summer, try to get shady sites next to the creek!

Overall Rating:

Fees of $20 for 7 days in S. Dakota parks, plus $25 campground plus more for taxes totaled $34 for our one night. But the campground is very nice, bordered by the highway a little off and a beautiful creek on the other side along which are well bordered tent sites. The campground is a well mowed lush green grass field with small and medium trees, with a multi-looped asphalt one way road and well spaced not always quite leveled asphalt sites with 20, 30, 50 amp electricity. One dump and several water threaded faucets. Two bathhouses with hot showers and a few pit toilet huts. A paved path great for biking and hiking borders the highway leading up to a large store, lodge, cabins, and pavilion up road (north) from the campground. Small playground. The vehicle sites are slanted to the campground road so one side you can back in, the other side just follow the loop and on the return you are set to back in the other side. There are ranger presentations. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

This state park is more like a national park, in fact, it's nicer than some national parks! Beautiful centrally located campground with spacious paved sites surrounded by grass and lots of tree. You can walk to the visitors center across the street (be sure to see the film), fish in the creek that borders the campground, take the paved hike and bike trail to the Game Lodge, or just stay put and watch the buffalo that grazed on the bordering open space each evening. We stayed a week and wished we had stayed two. Hands down our favorite state park experience anywhere! We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Motorhome.

Probably the finest state park in the country. Sites were spacious with electric hook-up only. Sites were paved, but slightly unlevel. Campground borders are fenced to keep Buffalo out, but nice walking paths that connect to Game Lodge, Visitor's Center, and General Store. The company running Custer State Park campsites (and lodging - I believe it's all the same), do a great job. FYI: the campgrounds at Custer are the only SD state park campsites you can reserve 1 year in advance. The sooner the better if you plan to go! Although, we were so surprised to see empty sites through our 4th of July stay this year. We simply couldn't figure out why that was.

Look below for the great reviewer that gives tips on best sites. I agree: those are the good ones! However, all sites are really quite decent and hard to imagine being disappointed.

Benefits to Game Lodge is it's location at the Eastern entrance to Park. Wildlife loop right there, a 2 mile paved trail from park to Game Lodge store, visitor center.

This campground also has the dump station if you need it. There are not mosquitoes but a few biting flies when we were here. We found Picardin insect spray to be effective.

Laundry convenient, bath building are awesome, well lit, clean, good water and pressure.

Between the great campground and the appeal of Custer State Park, this is a great destination!!! Any Custer campground is nice so take your pick and just go! We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This was an excellent state park. Location of the Game Lodge was convenient to Mt. Rushmore. We saw many wildlife throughout the park (Buffalo right in our campground!) So we did not see the need to pay money to go on the Wildlife loop. Sites were spacious and neighbors were friendly. There was no water nearby, which we did not notice until after we had unhooked. Ugh! Rookie mistake. Laundry facilities were very convenient and the bath house was clean and well maintained. We camped at Custer State Park - Game Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There were activities planned in and around the park- but we just followed our own plans. The Park was over an hour drive to Sioux City and also to Hot Springs, but the Hot Springs drive was scenic and we enjoyed seeing many wildlife on that trip. We did spend a day at Evan's Plunge natural hot spring waterpark and that was a fun day for the kids. Our family enjoyed spending the day at Sylvan lake where we hiked, fished and kayaked. We also enjoyed Needles highway.
