The best part of staying at the Ingalls Homestead is the evenings. Tourists leave at 7pm and you (and your kids) can roam the whole farm. It was wonderful! There were barn kittens which my daughter loved, as well as a calf, and hens with chicks. The locations is beautiful and the stars at night are spectacular.

However, the RV sites are not all that great. There are only 4 (that's good!). They are close together and you must share utilities. So, if one of you is using the 30 amp, and the other needs 30 amp, then s/he has to use the 50 amp (with an adapter). There is no other choice. Hoses and cables were everywhere. There are no sewer connections, but there is a dump station. Problem is, visitors in cars parked in front of the dump station, so we emptied our tanks elsewhere. Sites 1 and 2 are fine for trailers, but 3 and 4 would be very difficult to back into (everything is back in). Sites 3 and 4 are most appropriate for motor homes. The RV sites are next to the main visitor center on a small hill. We were in site 1 and were first to arrive. The big problem for us was when a severe thunderstorm came through at 4am. The site was very exposed. I was really concerned about our trailer. We evacuated to the concrete bathrooms down the hill when a tornado watch was issued. I'm from the west coast, so I'm not used to that kind of 50mph winds and heavy rain. I'm so glad they had a safe evacuation building. Ultimately, the trailer was pushed about 10" by the winds. No tornado touched down in the area. In the end, we had a great time at the Ingalls Homestead and I would happily stay here again. My daughter was never happier. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a small but decent grocery in DeSmet. They don't stock wine - just beer. The other historic Ingalls homes in town are worth your time too.

Being able to camp on the actual Ingalls family homestead is such a unique experience. There are only 4 RV sites and they have nice views of the surrounding land. The description they give of the bathrooms is accurate, "simple, but clean." Those were the most unique showers we encountered on our road trip. It was difficult figuring out which showers were free the way they were set up, but they were clean. However, we weren't there for the showers but for the Little House experience and that was perfect. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Tent Trailer.

There are 4 RV spaces at the Homestead, all back in near the visitor center. Sites were level, water and electric, no sewer. Would stay here again if we visited the homestead again. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Motorhome.

We went to this campsite to learn more about the Little House on the Prairie and it was not disappointing. The owners are very knowledgeable about the history of the Ingalls Homestead. They have lots of activities for the kids. There are 4 campsites and only Gray water dump station. It was very peaceful at night and would stay here again. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Motorhome.

We loved this campground. As lifelong Laura Ingalls Wilder fans, staying here is a powerful experience. It is absolutely beautiful. Bunkhouse is an old house or school. Very nice and spacious for the price. Bathrooms were clean. This is a small campground. There were only about six other families camping here. In addition to camping, the fee to explore the historic site is $10 per person, but this is good for your entire stay. They have Ma's house a barn where you go to look for the kittens, pony rides, a wagon ride, and other activities for kids. The town of De Smet is close by where there is a swimming pool. $1 for kids and $2 for adults. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Campground Cabin.

If they had full hookups I would have given them a 10. The previous reviewer is correct about the slope of the hill. It is a bit scary but we managed to get our 27ft TT in without a problem. The sight itself is just lovely. After they closed the homestead for the night we were allowed to ride bikes down toward the school house and back, walk the dogs around the homestead, and just generally enjoy the place. It was beautiful and peaceful. We arrived on July 4th. The homestead had a perfect view of the DeSmet 4th fireworks. I would return in a heartbeat. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Travel Trailer.

With all the land they have I don't know why they put the RV spots on a small hill. The back in spots are hard to get into, because of a steep slope. It was great to be so close to the homestead and the people were very accommodating. I advise only small RVs park in these sights. We have a 31 foot and we had to go over and down the slope to back into the spot. We would not go here again which is a shame because everything else was very good. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Fifth Wheel.

Our family had a wonderful time here. The owners and staff make you feel like a family guest, rather than a customer. We ended up staying over a week because our kids had such a good time, the entire grounds were so well kept and the ambiance so nice. There are only 4 RV sites, so you may want to call ahead. The sites share a power so they are paired but we had the place to ourselves for half the week in late August. It's not well known that they have RV camping. There is a dump station but no sewer at the sites. The visitor center restrooms are new and very close. There is a storm shelter just in case. If you're coming to De Smet for the Laura Ingalls Wilder history, you have to stop here. If you have kids, it's a MUST stop. Their family approach and hands on is the best we've seen in over a year of traveling the country with our young sons. We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here in a covered wagon that the Homestead has there. This is the original Ingalls 160 acre homestead. A great place to stay while in De Smet doing the Laura Ingalls Wilder thing. A must for those Little House on the Prairie fans. The rate is for a Covered wagon. $30 for a trailer site We camped at Ingalls Homestead in a Campground Cabin.
