Pros: Easy access off Hwy 385, except having to go through Deadwood, which is under construction for roads, convenient to the places we wanted to see; monuments, Badlands, Black Hills, local history, had a restaurant on site which we ate at making it convenient and pretty good food, Directv did work. Cons: there must be good off roading nearby because the park was mainly filled with ORVs making it dusty, noisy and a bit crowded, we have 43' MH w/TV, MH barely fit site and TV had to park on grass, all hookups were good, no WIFI on Verizon aircard, cell or campground, park was right on Hwy 385, no buffer, but surprisingly quiet. Park worked for our 3 night stay, but would probably seek another location next time. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

We camped here for 3 nights, there was no cell service, the Wi-Fi was working on and off, our hot spot worked fine, and the TV reception was worthless, there was no cable, we used our satellite system from our site with no problem... The fire pit was close to our rig but not really a problem if you don't leave it unattended. There is a picnic table at each site on a little concrete pad. All the sites had some grass. The hook ups were conveniently located. The staff was friendly, and the showers and bathroom, and laundry rooms were very clean and well maintained. . We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We chose this place based on what was available. It is one of several lined along the highway which runs up a mountain and through a canyon just outside of Deadwood. It was about a fifteen minute drive back into the town. This particular park is built on a ledge above a gas station and some rental cabins. We really weren't prepared for all the ATV and motorcycle folks in this small park and, in general, everywhere else. There are about eight pull thrus and the rest of the sites are back in. The pull thrus were easy in and out for us but we were perched on the edge of the ledge and right on the road between the pull thrus and the back ins. Not exactly conducive to sitting out in the evening. The fire pit was so close to our rig I didn't feel it would be safe to use. There was also a picnic table at each site on a little concrete pad. All the sites had some grass. They were level and the hook ups were conveniently located. There was no cell service and no wifi, even our hot spot was useless. The tv reception was also very dismal, both the satelite(Dish) and antennae. There was no cable. Made for some long evenings. The staff was friendly and the adjacent gas station/convenience store was pretty well stocked. The highway quieted down considerably after the sun went down. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We did a day trip to the Devils Tower which was very nice. We took the back roads thru a 100+ year old village, Aladin. We grocery shopped in Spearfish. We wondered around Deadwood, visited the cemetery and ate lunch at Mustang Sally's (I wouldn't recommend it). It was interesting but it is highly unlikely we would return.

RV park is in the mountains of the Black Hills but is still big rig friendly. We have a 42' Fifth with a 1 ton TV w/8' box. Had no problem getting up and down and around the curves. WI-FI, water and elec, but no TV. Restaurant, convenience gas station and propane all on premises. It gets cold at nite in the Black Hills but is terrific during the day. Stayed her for 2 nites on migration home from winter in AZ. Very friendly staff. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The black Hills.....something for everyone!

This is a good overnight stop if travelling on 385. We had a roomy, level, white gravel pull-thru site. The facility was clean and well-organized with a fuel-stop, restaurant and a nicely supplied store. We would stop here again, without question, if on Route 385. The rate quoted is Passport America. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a Passport America park, but be sure and tell them when you call. For the money in the area this is a OK park. The sites are along the mountainside behind the gas state/store/restaurant. It is located a little way out of Deadwood city. We stayed here 3 nights and it was a nice stopover. Our site was a long enough pull-through gravel site and had good Wi-Fi. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is a little ways out of Deadwood but really clean and nicely laid out. Great cafe and gas station connected to the sites. Super nice shower and laundry set-up. Would stay here again! We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean restrooms and showers in 8 individual compartments. Laundry was nice &2/$2. Staff was friendly and efficient. Mostly back-in sites and few pull-throughs. Utilities work and Wi-Fi is adequate. This park caters to ATVs and motorcycles. The area north of Mt. Rushmore is the center of the Sturgis-Deadwood car and bike culture. If you want nature look south of Mt. Rushmore. Had problems with the restaurant on site. Average at best. Burgers and fried food is the cuisine of the area. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

This rate reflects Passport America discount. Would not stay here again. Called for directions to park and were given wrong directions, because of this we almost burned up our brakes. The campground is right behind the convenience store and off US 385, very noisy. This campground caters to off-roaders. Would not recommend this park for big rigs. Rate was based on Passport America. Located within 5 miles or so of Deadwood. The campground sits on high land with no danger of creek or river flooding. All sites are gravel and level. Utilities are good. There is no cable; however, we were able it get 3 over the air local channels and Direct TV satellite reception (site #8). Phone reception is spotted (we have Verizon) and there is a Verizon booster in the store. At our site we got about 2 bars. The showers are very nice. Each stall has a private shower, dressing area, and toilet with locks. There were about 5 available showers. A nice convenience store is at the foot of the hill, plus a fantastic restaurant is located on site. They offered a 10% discount on your meal with a receipt from the convenience store. The menu is a wide variety; but don't miss Pete's Chinese selections! We would stay again if in the Deadwood area. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

We camped here in a 40' class A in Oct 2013. On the 2nd day we were hit with an unpredicted blizzard that left 48' of snow and 6-7' drifts. The campground owners were wonderful. We could not have found a better place to be "snowed-in." (South Dakota closed all the roads for 2 days while they cleared downed trees and plowed the roads). We were warm and safe and with very helpful owners. The shower/bath room combo is wonderful, and the cleanest we've ever seen. Laundry is great. If I could, I would give this park a 15, instead of a 10! We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Passport America rate made it pleasing. It is about 8 miles from Deadwood. There is absolutely no AT&T cell service, so iPad was also useless. AND the Wi-Fi did not work at the campsite. They made no attempt to fix it. Hardly worked at the office. Otherwise it is a nice campground in a very pleasant setting. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This was a really nice park. There was some road noise as the park overlooks US 385, but the spot was nice. Bathrooms, laundry, and showers were all SUPER clean and nice. There is even a really good restaurant on site (The Pub n Grub) where we had a nice breakfast with good coffee. There is quite a climb to get in or out of the park, but all in all a great place to stay. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Showers and laundry nicest we've ever encountered. Campsites very clean, well maintained and nicely spaced. Lots of vehicle noise during the day from nearby highway, but quiets down at night. Convenience store with gas next campground. We would definitely stay there again. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here for a week. What a beautiful place nestled in a valley about 7 miles south of Deadwood South Dakota. Very well taken care of. They have free private showers that are spotless. A very clean laundry room with 3 washers and 3 dryers. We used our Passport America discount and stayed 7 nights for 18.50 per night. We hope to stay here again. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Travel Trailer.
