Stayed for two nights. Although we were close to the road, we didn't hear it at all. Our site had a concrete slab with it's own trash can. Didn't eat at the resturant but the little store had a good peanutbutter rice krispy. Chose this because of afternoon shade from the hill. Might want to unhook before going over Strawberry HIll from Deadwood. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $34.00

We paid $34 for three nights and the full rate of $38 for two nights, when it was "Jeep Camp" week and there were no discounts. This park sits behind a convenience store, gas station, and restaurant (food was fair). There is one long row of back-in sites of varying length and some pull-throughs parallel to the road in front of the back-ins. The road and sites are fine gravel with nice grass between the sites, which are nicely spaced apart. The road was actually more dirt than gravel, leading to a lot of dust when all the jeeps were driving through. A steep pine tree-covered hill behind the park makes for a nice setting. Rest rooms/showers consist of very nice large, private rooms with shower, sink and toilet. We could not get Verizon cell/data service at our site, but it did work at the store, where there was a booster. Park Wi Fi usually worked the first few days, but after the park was full service was slow or non-existent. There is no cable TV, and the trees and hill blocked our DirecTV reception. Four channels were available over-the-air. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Great family run RV park with pub and fuel/convenience store. Great pull-through site. Only problem was that I didn't expect that it was at 5200 plus feet elevation. Stayed for two nights, but had all the comforts of home. Very clean. Close to Deadwood and Sturgis. Was off season. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a newer park with a good store, LP and Gas station, laundry etc all clean and newer. Good hookups. Very friendly staff and owners on site. 6 miles S of Deadwood, the location is quiet yet not too far from Deadwood. There are steep grades on 385. Be prepared to mountain climb (disconnect toad and drive separate). Great park. PPA rate wasn't good during special event but honored for 2nd and 3rd nights with a smile. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Deadwood has great places to eat. We are casual slot players and really enjoyed the clean, smoke free casinos. The atmosphere was fun and informal. Really had a great time.

Stayed here for a week. Sites are nice sized. We had a pull through. Good wifi service even during a thunderstorm! Laundry has 3 washers and dryers. Tip - don't plan to use Sunday am. They have cabin linens they wash. Great store and gas station on site. Liked the location - close to Deadwood and local attractions (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse). Staff were friendly. Fire pit and trash can at each site. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Pros: Easy access off Hwy 385, except having to go through Deadwood, which is under construction for roads, convenient to the places we wanted to see; monuments, Badlands, Black Hills, local history, had a restaurant on site which we ate at making it convenient and pretty good food, Directv did work. Cons: there must be good off roading nearby because the park was mainly filled with ORVs making it dusty, noisy and a bit crowded, we have 43' MH w/TV, MH barely fit site and TV had to park on grass, all hookups were good, no WIFI on Verizon aircard, cell or campground, park was right on Hwy 385, no buffer, but surprisingly quiet. Park worked for our 3 night stay, but would probably seek another location next time. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

We camped here for 3 nights, there was no cell service, the Wi-Fi was working on and off, our hot spot worked fine, and the TV reception was worthless, there was no cable, we used our satellite system from our site with no problem... The fire pit was close to our rig but not really a problem if you don't leave it unattended. There is a picnic table at each site on a little concrete pad. All the sites had some grass. The hook ups were conveniently located. The staff was friendly, and the showers and bathroom, and laundry rooms were very clean and well maintained. . We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed at the Steel Wheel RV park for 8 days leading up to the Sturgis Rally in our 40' rig. Check in was easy because of our reservation. The check in staff was very friendly. There is a nice size grocery store and amazing gift shop as well as restaurant. We found our space with no problem but our spot was a little smaller then what we told them so it was hard to fit without sticking out on the roadway. There are some pull thru loops but, they were booked a year before due to the Sturgis rally. The sites are gravel driveways with a grass area. We were in space 15. There are no trees in this area where we were staying except for the back of us which is a forest. The spaces are roomy. The sites are somewhat level but we still needed blocks or levelers due to our having to park somewhat sideways in the space. The electric utilities were all in the right place and in working order for my spot. Our satellite worked fine as did our Verizon hot spot. The showers were nice and clean and one of the most modern and roomy that we have ever seen. The laundry facilities were nice and the machines were kept up. This camp is close to the town of Deadwood and Rushmore and Custer park. We would have stayed longer but, like most places around Sturgis the price goes from $30.00 to over a $100.00 a night. Our only complaint is that 4 days before the bike rally started the onsite restaurant changed the menu from really nice selections to just a few and the prices were raised all for the rally which was still days away. I call foul on the owners. Everyone out to make a buck off people not even there for the rally. We would look at the other rv parks in the area next time. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Great jump off point to see Rushmore and Deadwood. If you don't like ATV's driving through your camp and dusting you out, you may want to find another place. The majority of the campers here are off roaders.

We chose this place based on what was available. It is one of several lined along the highway which runs up a mountain and through a canyon just outside of Deadwood. It was about a fifteen minute drive back into the town. This particular park is built on a ledge above a gas station and some rental cabins. We really weren't prepared for all the ATV and motorcycle folks in this small park and, in general, everywhere else. There are about eight pull thrus and the rest of the sites are back in. The pull thrus were easy in and out for us but we were perched on the edge of the ledge and right on the road between the pull thrus and the back ins. Not exactly conducive to sitting out in the evening. The fire pit was so close to our rig I didn't feel it would be safe to use. There was also a picnic table at each site on a little concrete pad. All the sites had some grass. They were level and the hook ups were conveniently located. There was no cell service and no wifi, even our hot spot was useless. The tv reception was also very dismal, both the satelite(Dish) and antennae. There was no cable. Made for some long evenings. The staff was friendly and the adjacent gas station/convenience store was pretty well stocked. The highway quieted down considerably after the sun went down. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We did a day trip to the Devils Tower which was very nice. We took the back roads thru a 100+ year old village, Aladin. We grocery shopped in Spearfish. We wondered around Deadwood, visited the cemetery and ate lunch at Mustang Sally's (I wouldn't recommend it). It was interesting but it is highly unlikely we would return.

RV park is in the mountains of the Black Hills but is still big rig friendly. We have a 42' Fifth with a 1 ton TV w/8' box. Had no problem getting up and down and around the curves. WI-FI, water and elec, but no TV. Restaurant, convenience gas station and propane all on premises. It gets cold at nite in the Black Hills but is terrific during the day. Stayed her for 2 nites on migration home from winter in AZ. Very friendly staff. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a good overnight stop if travelling on 385. We had a roomy, level, white gravel pull-thru site. The facility was clean and well-organized with a fuel-stop, restaurant and a nicely supplied store. We would stop here again, without question, if on Route 385. The rate quoted is Passport America. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a Passport America park, but be sure and tell them when you call. For the money in the area this is a OK park. The sites are along the mountainside behind the gas state/store/restaurant. It is located a little way out of Deadwood city. We stayed here 3 nights and it was a nice stopover. Our site was a long enough pull-through gravel site and had good Wi-Fi. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean restrooms and showers in 8 individual compartments. Laundry was nice &2/$2. Staff was friendly and efficient. Mostly back-in sites and few pull-throughs. Utilities work and Wi-Fi is adequate. This park caters to ATVs and motorcycles. The area north of Mt. Rushmore is the center of the Sturgis-Deadwood car and bike culture. If you want nature look south of Mt. Rushmore. Had problems with the restaurant on site. Average at best. Burgers and fried food is the cuisine of the area. We camped at Steel Wheel Campground in a Motorhome.

This rate reflects Passport America discount. Would not stay here again. Called for directions to park and were given wrong directions, because of this we almost burned up our brakes. The campground is right behind the convenience store and off US 385, very noisy. This campground caters to off-roaders. Would not recommend this park for big rigs.
