we stayed here for 2 nights touring Custer State Park and surroundings. this is an excellent campground right off the highway, very clean, well maintained CG, friendly owners - very accommodating, restrooms are clean, free showers, we bought propane gas for MH at a very reasonable price - price reflects Passport America discount - will most definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone passing through the area. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Very friendly on the phone, very friendly office staff at check in. Park is in a great location for sightseeing. New campground and alot of detail has gone into this park. Construction still going on for new facilities. Easy on/off the highway, great signage (our GPS was confused though). We had a standard sized lot, gravel, no shade. Fire ring and picnic table on our site. Cable offered, and fantastic hispeed internet. Laundry facilities absolutely spotless. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

This is a decent park at the Passport America 50% discount but I would have rated it lower if I had to pay the full $60/nt for one of their "Super Sites". We enjoyed the cable TV and very good wi-fi. There were few campers here when we visited and the wi-fi speed was very good and their networks was reliable with zero dropped connections. Our Super Site provided ample room for both our 43 ft coach and our tow car. They are currently expanding to add a large number of new sites. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

We found the park to be noisy from the highway. The spaces are gravel and dirt with grass between. The interior roads are ok but the parking sites are narrow and that makes it hard to bet a big trailer in without going on the grass. The space between was average. The park is clean with the office area having some items for sale. We were told we could not park the tow vehicle in front of our trailer did not care for that situation. We will find another park when we are in the area. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

More of a commercial type park, there is a pool and 2 bathhouses. Wifi worked for us, but was spotty couldn't access it the first day or two. Cable worked well, and the office plays movies on a couple channels throughout the day. All gravel throughout park, with some grass between the sites. Its a large park, with a lot of overnighters, so you will leave with a dusty rig. Sites were just long enough for a big rig only, although they do have overflow for parking. The widths are about average for large commercial type parks, there is a table and fire ring as well. No shade in the park as of now, seems to be a newer park that was built in a plane. Although the park has planted trees, they just aren't tall enough yet.

Also this is a passport park, and will allow you to use it for unlimited nights. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Its about a 15-20 minuted drive up to rapid city, custer state park is about a hour or so. If you leave the park, take a left and then the first left off the highway (theres a gas station). It takes you to custer park, there is a road as you enter the park named Iron Mountain Road. Take that up to MT. Rushmore for a beautiful scenic drive of the Black hills.

Gravel sites, large grassy tent area, clean laundry room, friendly staff, all RV sites have grass in-between. The sites are close enough that "inconsiderate" neighbors might disturb you. The park is located next to the highway and across from railroad track so there is some noise from traffic. Workers in RVs occupied the rows against the highway. WiFi a bit slow at times. We stayed 10 days while we toured the Black Hills region. The only real complaint I have is the small cactus and wild rose hedge (under 2 inches) that are growing"willy-nilly" in the dog run. I would stay here again. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fuel, pizza and major access roads to the Black Hills within a half mile. Wal-Mart 17 miles north in Rapid City. If driving across Custer State Park allow 45 minutes due to the 35 mph speed limits and possible "buffalo jams." Less traffic encountered during morning hours if traveling to Mt Rushmore, etc.

Sites were gravel but very level. There is no shade but was not a problem during our stay of two nights. One of the owners, was very helpful in providing information to maximize our tour of the area. There was some road noise but it was not excessive. Campground was relatively dark and guests were quiet. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.

We are currently staying in the park and are very happy. We left the other day without extending our reservation but I called the office told them we were staying 3 more days. However we didn't know if we would make it back before the office closed. Offered our credit card but they responded with just come in the next morning, now that's great customer service. Also every time I've been to the office everyone I've spoken with could not be friendlier or more helpful. Five stars for the staff here.

The laundry room was clean, cost to wash was $2.00 and $1.50 to dry. Yes the park is gravel but we've had no issues with dust, so no complains there. Our pull-thru was no quite long enough for both our rig and tow but that was fine as there was parking very close for our truck. However, there was space on our site to park our motorcycle.

Our only complaint is the WiFi to say it's spotty at time is being generous. I was able to get on, although the service was slow, it took my husband 2 days before he could connect (all we wanted to do was check our email) I know there were comments in earlier reviews about kids streaming, believe me there is no way anyone could stream...the band width is not good at all.

Did not use the restrooms so cannot comment.

Would have give this park, for our needs, a 10 if they could sort out the WiFi. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

We stayed in our 40 foot 5th. Our daughter & family stayed in one of the cabins. This is a great location for those visiting the Black Hills with big rigs! It is easy to make day trips to all the sites from this easy in & out location. It is on a highway & while the noise was very noticeable outside it did not keep us awake. Not even the night we had the bedroom window open. We were in site #411 which was an end site. No leveling needed & right across the road from the restroom/shower building. The shower & restrooms were well laid out & clean. We had no issue using the Wi-Fi & found the connection & speed better than many campgrounds we have stayed at. There are baby trees planted here & there so eventually there will be some shaded areas. My husband prefers not having to maneuver around trees. The park map & rules sheet also had the county name -- made it easy to watch the weather. The sites are various lengths so they can accommodate all the different sized rigs. Plenty of side room for slides & awning without feeling like you were infringing on your neighbors.

Our daughter had planned on tenting it but the sky was threatening so she upgraded to a cabin. The staff had placed us directly across from each other but without any complaining they moved her to a cabin & had changed our site so we were still close. Our 8 yr old grandson enjoyed the playground & the pool with his dad.

The cabin had a queen bottom twin top bunk bed, coach, & small table along with TV & air conditioner. Cabins are a bit small but they still had room for two pack'n'plays for 1 yr old twins. Beds were comfortable. They had a bit of a walk to the bathroom/shower building.

The cable TV includes some stations that they played movies on from the office. They were featuring Forrest Gump & Star Wars while we were there. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

Near all things BlackHills, friendly and informative staff, good electric, water and sewer. Gravel sites, limited tv and cell service and in a busy highway. The big surprise, which occurred in the middle of the night was a train horn...never ending! Great pizza restaurant right around the corner. The staff went above duty giving us routes to take, things to see, etc. Even with the noise, it's a nice campground and we would stay here again if in the area. We did use the laundry room which was neat, clean and reasonable. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

The good news: they honor Passport America with no limit on the length of stay. The park looked well maintained. The bad news: the interior roads are very tight for a motorhome. For units on the north end of the camp, you will get sewer smell from what appears to be an open cesspool if the wind is right. The sites are so short you can't park your car with your motorhome. We had to literally park across the road from our motorhome. There is grass between sites, but the sites are so close together we could literally hear people talking in the next rig inside their travel trailer with all of their doors and windows closed. The big down was the wifi. It was beyond question the worst I have ever experienced at a park. When I complained to the staff, their initial response was "it's just kids streaming video and we can't help it." When I tried to explain that would not cause the problem I was experiencing, they basically just said they didn't want to be bothered. I even offered a potential solution, but they didn't want to hear it. It was that attitude, as much as the abysmal wifi, that really turned me off. Most Passport parks I have stayed in have been great. This one is an exception. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Custer State Park is close by. Wal-Mart is in Rapid City about 18 miles away. Wind Cave is about 45 minutes drive south. Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore are both about 40 minutes away. While in Rapid City, do take the Walk of Presidents downtown. You might even learn something about our former Presidents.

Free Cable, but we use our antenna, good HD reception. Free good working WiFi. It is along a busy highway, but at night the traffic slows down and you don't hear it. Convenient to a lot of parks and drives. They also have fire pits but you just don't hope somebody will use it, much to close to the rigs. We sure come back.
