My DH and I stayed at this CG for a week. The employees were extremely nice and helpful. They are expanding the campground to add tons more sites so there was dust (and mud) throughout the sites. The small grassy dog walk area always had some dog poop in it (what's wrong with some people?) Although its listed in the regulations (and is common decency) to clean up after you pets, maybe some signs and poop bags could help the situation? Our site was long enough for our RV but we needed to park our car across the road which was not far at all. We loved the various activities this area has to offer and very much enjoyed our time here. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Well maintained, level, gravel lots. Sites are very close together, with a nice patch of grass, but no shade. I'd rate the park a 7 or 8 if the sites were not so close together. Of note is the fact that they offer the Passport America discount, without so many of the nuisance restrictions. We stayed 21 days and used the PPA discount each day, making it a very affordable stay. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Read the reviews about the mud and noise. We had no mud for the week we were here. Yes there is some road noise from the highway but nothing like some reported. I take it as normal street noise you would get anywhere in a camp grounds with FHU. I think for a weeks stay it's acceptable. Would I want to stay here 2, 3, or more months? Probably not as the sites are too close for my liking and there were no trees for shade. My site was just long enough for my 39' 5th wheel. Once unhooked I had to park across the road which really didn't bother me as it was in front of our trailer. Plus there was room for our other vehicle. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

We have stayed here several times and each time new improvements are being made. The sites are level, good wifi at the site, and central hook ups. A new item we noticed was after arrival we received an email with a welcome note and several links to surrounding things to do including directions. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

I assumed this park would be more wooded, but it's out in the rolling plains below the bigger foothills of the Black Hills. Consequently, there were no trees for shade. That said, the sites are probably too close for trees anyway. I believe the longer sites are on the last row or two furthest from the highway. We have a long 5th wheel and a dog, so we were assigned a site close to the dog walk area (much appreciated!) and far from the highway. Consequently, we didn't notice any highway noise. The park's WiFi was not reliable and their free cable TV consisted of about 12 channels many of which had poor reception-at least on the last row a good ways from the office. At least two of the three "Heartland Movie Channels" ran the same movie for 24 hours. The roads and pull throughs are a mix gravel and soil that turned to a very muddy mess while we were there due to considerable rain on multiple days. They are making an attempt to minimize this mess, but there really isn't much they can do without paving the entire area. I'm guessing they're waiting to do that when they finish expanding the rest of the park. The restrooms/showers were very nice and clean and the 50amp service didn't fluctuate The Passport America rate is almost $32 (taxes included), which means the rate for none PA members is $64. Given the mud, poor WiFi and TV selection, I don't consider the PA rate a bargain. Until the roads and sites are paved, we'll stay somewhere in the Black Hills. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This RV Park is located about 15 miles south of Rapid City and about 15 minutes from one of the entrances to Custer State Park. This is a large, well-laid-out park. Sites and roads are good gravel and site spacing is close but not quite on top of one another. Most of the sites are just long enough for the camping unit but plenty of parking is across the road from the campsites. The campground has decent WiFi, cable TV, a pool, and laundry rooms. There's a camp store and a new activity building is just being completed. Also it looks as if the campground itself is being expanded. The staff is constantly out and about, keeping things in good shape. The location itself is interesting because it is at the edge of the Black Hills which are mostly hidden from view because of the terrain. The immediate vicinity of the campground is treeless, rolling hills but within a couple of minutes of the campground the beauty of the area is plainly visible just to the west and within minutes of leaving the campground and heading west you are driving through it all. For us, the campground struck a balance between being close to the state park, but with full hookups and an easy drive versus being right in the middle of it all but either being in the state park with electric only or driving through twisting, sometimes steep grades to a commercial campground in the Black Hills. Also, this park has the distinction of accepting Passport America and Escapees half price rates with no stay limit or blackout dates. You definitely want one of these two memberships if you are going to stay here. Aside from being just slightly outside the beauty of the Black Hills the only other negative is the constant noise from highway 79, the primary north/south route in the area. Our site was in the row farthest from the highway so the noise wasn't quite as bad as it was in the rows along the highway. The traffic is 24/7 so it is something you have to make peace with during a stay at this campground. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in this park about 7 years ago and they have made quite an expansion probably because of their great service and cleanliness. The sites were level with central hook ups. FHUs were good-elect, water, sewer, wifi , cable. Sites in this park are well laid out , level gravel with grass between and well maintained. Our site was long enough for our 40' MH plus room for our car behind. There was a strong sewer smell the first day were here because the wind direction from the sewer settling ponds and lower end on park. There is expansion going on so much noise from dozer and scraper plus some hwy noise. The park is adding 100 sites so it will be quieter when construction is complete. We would come back if we can stay away from settling ponds. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Close to entrance of Custer SP. We went into park 3 days this time, this is a good time of year to go to park . We went to the Wild Horse Sanctuary near Hot Springs. We did not go to Wind Cave this time but did last time here. We have been in this park before and liked its location . Good pizza place nearby. Diesel prices good at Flying J nearby.

All of the previous reviews are accurate except they understated the road noise. It was horrible. Couldn't carry on a conversation outside, couldn't hear over the noise of the very loud trucks and motorcycles. Couldn't leave the windows open because of the noise. Also, short sites, couldn't fit 34' fifth wheel and truck. Had to park truck 2 rows over by tent sites. We don't walk thru other people's campsites so had to walk all the way around on the road to get to it. Would never stay here again. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here while touring the Black Hills. The park is gravel; sites are close together but there is grass in between the sites. There is some road noise. Overall, the campground was quiet. There was a place to walk the dog. Our pull through just barely accommodated our motorhome and tow vehicle...we did have to unhook. Nice, clean laundry room. No trees but great park for short visit. Yes, there is grass for pets, and owner and staff are very accommodating. They are still expanding though not bothersome. We pulled up in front to left of office and had to back up to get to the proper road so you might want to hang back to avoid backing. There are parks with views and trees elsewhere but we liked it here for cell and WiFi. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If going north from Denver we took I-25 to I-85 to 18 and then over to 79. Roads were fabulous for 45' towing. Little traffic after leaving Denver area. Don't arrive after dark because park isn't lit well for arrivals then though park is right off Highway 79. Easy to miss when heading North, MM79 on left if traveling North.

Lots of maps and brochures in the office and a video on campground website for car trip.

If you are visiting Mt Rushmore, the Badlands or just about anything in the Rapid City area, this is a very centrally located park and with Passport America is an excellent value. We were in a West facing site at the edge of the park and were looking over an empty field, very nice. The site was long enough for our RV but the parking was along the edge of the park about 20' away, so it was still convenient. Our site was not very level and we had to add blocks under our jacks and wheels to get level. However, I would stay here again and I would request a site in the #6nn line of sites. We camped at Heartland RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Custer State Park is huge and you will need at least one full day if not two days to see the park. Go on the "wild life loop" road. we saw many buffalo's, prairie dogs, deer and begging burros. Go on some of the dirt roads that are open to the public. We saw several Elk while on one of these roads. The "Needles" hwy is one that I will not forget. There are a lot of small towns, like Deadwood, Hill City, Spearfish, Keystone, Hot Springs and Custer that you should include.
