Great place to camp in the Black Hills. This was my second trip to the area in four years, I always stay at Horse Thief Campground and look forward to staying there again next trip. Very friendly, any issues are solved right away. Just a beautiful camp ground, scenery and wildlife are incredible. Ideal location on route 87, short drive up to Sylvan Lake. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed a week in our 36' Class A with full hookups. The park advertises Big Rig Friendly, and it is to a point. The road off Highway 16, 87, is very narrow, but navigable at slow speeds, and a bit touchy if you meet another rig. The park roads can be very tight, and the site we had was too narrow and hilly. The fire ring was much too close. There are other sites that are much larger. The park is beautiful, very wooded, with grass and lots of places to take walks. Deer were everywhere. The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a nice store, which is so pet friendly our dog wanted to keep coming back. OTA, WiFi and Cell coverage is nearly absent. Hill City is very close, as are most of the attractions in the Black Hills. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Ask up front for a larger site if you have a big rig. Deadwood is 45 minutes away, and a bit of a disappointment unless you are into casinos. There is some history to see but the buildings are not original. Parking is paid but very reasonable.

Quiet, picturesque, and centrally located amidst local attractions. One of the best we have been at. WIFI can be iffy. Staff was friendly and very helpful. If looking for a restful location at Rushmore, this is it. Pet friendly. This isn't just good, it is great. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

The owners of this campground are very friendly and helpful. The roads inside the campground have a lot of ruts, but we did manage to avoid most of them in our 41' motorhome. This is a very pet friendly park. They welcomed our 9 small dogs, and allowed our portable fence. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Motorhome.

This place was a disappointment. It is in need of lots of work. It is perfect for tent camping but not for trailers or motor homes that are over 30 ft. Our campsite was not level, the wTer pressure was horrible. If you took a shower between 8:00 and 9:00 am you could plan on having a trickle of water if they. When we left we had to go around a sharp curve (pulling a 42 ft. Trailer) missing a water faucet in the middle of the road (why we never knew) then had to drive thru two large trees. I would never recommend this place nor would I stay there again. We planned for 6 months for this trip and the campsite was such a disappointment. If you plan on using a tailgater to pick up satellite forget it and they don't even offer cable. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed for 6 nights on one of their large pull though sites. Yes it was nice and long but the pull through itself wasn't graded properly and the surrounding ground was very uneven. Poor wifi and cell reception wasn't good, but the thing that was unacceptable was the lack of water at breakfast time rendering our own facilities useless. Built with primitive camping in mind. Campground is quiet and clean. Roads are a bit narrow, but all the big rigs here during my stay managed with no problems. Staff very friendly and helpful. If they didn't have what I needed in their store, they offered to run into town and get it for me. Pool is small but nice for a quick swim-pool is also heated. No loud late night parties allowed- very family oriented. Great views of the surrounding mountains-most of the campground has mature trees mixed in. We could see deer right from our campsite. Water pressure is not very good. Cell service and WiFi signal is weak at best- great to really get away from the rest of life. We would definitely stay here again. Park people are nice as they come, but this place is in bad shape. Roads are very narrow and in very bad shape. Many cars coming in and out dragged bottom in the ruts. I had to use 4 wheel drive to get into my site and out of it. There is just enough gravel on each site for the wheels to fit on then there is grass and mud everywhere else. My site was at the bottom of a row of 5 pull through sites and all the water drained to my site which made a mess. This park has great potential, but somebody has to do more than "get by" maintenance. In the condition the park is in now, I would not stay again and I feel the price paid for a park in this condition was a bit much. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We arrived early in the season, still snow on the ground. Friendly and helpful staff. Small camp store. Not many campers there, very quiet but probably not true in season. Sites are roomy and nice view. Some mud, some gravel some grass at site. Utilities are fine. Should be central to most attractions but Hiway 87 was tempoarily closed to Custer State Park. Really large rigs may have issues getting in but our 34' was fine. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Depending on your perspective, this is either too far off the beaten path or central to many activities. For us it was the latter. Close to Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse and Hill City, this campground is picturesque and quiet. Sites are close together but there is just enough room between you and your neighbor. A very nice family runs the campground and pride of ownership shows throughout as the restrooms are clean and the grounds are well maintained. The pool is small but warm and good for the 10 and under crowd. We spent 8 days here and enjoyed this campground for its natural beauty, proximity to hiking, biking and sightseeing. We'll definitely return again. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

In the generally very commercial area around Mt Rushmore, this is a haven of tranquility yet still close to all the action. The 2 mile state road up to the campground may be a bit much if you're 45' and towing but for our 33' rig it was no problem at all. The campground is very quiet and scenic, situated on a hill. The sites are not al level and leveling may be a challenge in some sites. At our site the sewer connection was somewhat uphill from the site, a bit unusual and made dumping somewhat of a challenge. Fire rings, tables, pool, playground, store etc all nice and all well cared for. Friendly and helpful staff. Internet weak and cell reception also weak. That is the downside of an an otherwise excellent and peaceful full service mountain surrounding. Will definitely come back for the rest and beauty of this place. We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Motorhome.

The secondary road to the park from the main US highway is a little tight for a 45 foot coach with a tow. Lucky, it was only 2 miles. It was freshly paved. The check in was great, very friendly!! The roads were all graveled, but very tight. Our site had a large trees, pine with a table. The site was not level. Had to reposition the coach. Was still barely able to level it. Needed a lot more gravel. While we were there we encountered several large thundershowers. On several occasions the gravel road washed out. The owner was quick to fix things, which was fine. When leaving it was a struggle to dodge large rocks and the washed out shoulders of the gravel internal roads. If you're 40 feet and less its a fine place to stay. They will need to do some work to keep large rigs coming in. Really need to address the roads. Finally, the owners were very nice, friendly and very helpful. Place was very clean!!! We camped at Horse Thief Campground & RV Resort in a Motorhome.
