Clearly I'm in the minority but I don't understand the high ratings for this campground. Easy access to and in the park with our extra large sized 40+ Big Rig RV. Very Expensive and I was on a site with thin washed-out gravel with no cable or wifi. Not a resort; more a campground with a swimming pool and a dirty hot-tub. Power flickered several times during our stay. Water was opaque (like watered down milk). Pretty setting but sites are not oriented to see the views. Will look for a campground that is priced more reasonably in relation to amenities offered next time in the area. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Be aware that in Custer State Park some lakes and day use areas are part of the Black Hills National Forrest and are not covered by the admission fee to Custer State Park. Not clearly reflected on visitor maps and a 15 minute walk along Bismarck Lake resulted in a $4 ticket.

Three night stay at an excellent location for exploring the Black Hills or just staying around the campground taking advantage of all of the activities available. Would definitely stay at this campground again whenever in the area. Clean, well maintained with lots of activities and room to roam. Easy to find, easy in and out friendly and helpful staff. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Take the summer off; bring the kids; turn them loose - all kinds of activities. Swimming pool, volley ball, basket ball, biking, hiking, etc. Relax and take it easy. Easy access to Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, and Sturgis. We stayed only one night, but would gladly return for a vacation length stay. A bit pricy, but "you get what you pay for." We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Sturgis, Deadwood/Lead, Rushmore, Crazy Horse.

explore the Black Hills.

A nice campground EXCEPT during Sturgis motorcycle rally week.

Sites can use some leveling and upkeep to eliminate tire ruts.

A little pricey considering the lack of amenities (no TV, wifi wasn't available during days and evenings). We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Staff very nice and helpful, showers were nice but need updating. Not enough showers or toilets. again another shower area too small and the floor gets wet because of no curb or longer shower curtains. but overall I would stay there again. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Very large park with beautiful scenery. Our site was a large pull thru with lots of grass between sites. Gravel pads but our spot was level did see some that might not be as level. Staff very helpful and park was close to all the Black Hill sites. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

What sets this park apart from many others is the large amount of "green space". Not only are the sites large and nicely spaced, but also there are six distinct camping areas, each separated with plenty of trees and grass. The pool is spotless, as is the hot tub. The camp store is well stocked with food, camping essentials, souvenirs and gifts. We camped in Line Camp, and the view of the Black Hills was terrific. We would definitely return to this campground. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This park is centrally located to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park, with easy access to Hwys. 16 and 385. Krull's grocery store in Hill City has a fairly good assortment of fresh foods. Although we didn't eat there, we heard the Alpine Inn offers a very good filet mignon dinner each night at a fair price.

Beautiful park with a very picturesque setting. What I really liked about this particular CG is that it is centrally located to all major attractions in the black hills. It is priced higher than most but after touring the area I can see why. Most CG's we passed were very cramped. The pool was heated and they also have a hot tub. They have created a new section on the base camp area that is not yet on the map. This worked well as our 2 kids had ample room to play. Gravel sites were level. Very curtious staff. I would definitely stay here again when visiting the area. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Needles highway and the wildlife loop is a must! Take carrots with you on the wildlife loop. You can feed the burros. The rangers do approve this.

Cannot say enough good things about this park. Beautifully kept grounds and the staff is helpful and pleasant. Loads of shaded sites. WiFi was hit and miss like most parks. Our 4G worked. DirecTV signal was good once we got it tuned in. Centrally located to all the sights. Great for kids. They sell firewood but get it early as they do run out. First class all the way. We are already planning a return trip. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Ride the 1880 train to keystone and layover. It's easier that driving up and parking, but make reservations!

Very large and spread out park, many area choices to meet either tent or big rig camping needs. Sites were mostly level, with picnic tables and fire rings. All in all, very peaceful, with nice views of the surrounding hills/bluffs and forest. Conveniently situated for day trips to Deadwood, Custer SP and NP, Mount Rushmore and Needles highway (a must see). Swimming pool was centrally located and well maintained. Laundry and shower facilities were clean and well taken care of. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Tent Trailer.

This is park is situated on a large tract and is divided into several sections, each a distance away from one another. It is a beautiful setting.

We were in Ranch Camp, in the upper area of the park. There was no cable or Wi-Fi there. Not all sections have bathhouses, but Ranch Camp does and it was heavily utilized.

Ranch Camp has numerous evergreen trees which provide plenty of shade. The downside of that is they also provide obstacles for getting in and out of the sites. Our site 155 was a U shaped one and a long trailer or RV would have to use great care in getting in and out. Thankfully our trailer is 23 feet. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Rafter J is near Hill City which is an excellent place to use as a base for all the attractions in the southern Black Hills. Two were highlights: Crazy Horse Memorial where, with a contribution, you are taken right up to the top at the base of his head. The other is a hike to the top of Harney Peak, the tallest spot east of the Rockies. Young and old alike were hiking it when we were there.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch for 3 nights. The campground is very well situated to easily visit the many attractions such as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. This is a very well run family oriented campground. The roads are packed gravel but they are easy to maneuver a large RV around. Even though the campground was full it did not seem crowded because most of the sites are spread out and have lots of shade trees. The pool was clean and large enough for the many campers to use on a hot day. The restrooms, showers and laundry room were clean and well maintained. The staff was very helpful at check in and offered helpful advice about the local attractions. I would highly recommend Rafter J Bar Ranch to anyone visiting the area. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hill City is a great western style town to walk around and enjoy lots of great restaurants, and gift shops. Custer State park is a must see for anyone visiting the area. The wildlife from buffalo and wild burrows to Prairie dogs seems to be everywhere as you drive through the park. Needles Byway is breathtaking and very majestic.

If you like to camp in a forest type setting this is the place for you. We were in the Ranch camp and it was like being in a forest service campground but with all the hook ups. There were 4 rvs in our group and we were all next to each other. Making reservations was so easy for 4 rvs. Their is a bike trail in front of the campground that goes for many miles in both directions. Will definitely stay again. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Mt Rushmore ,Crazy Horse , Hill City , Custer City are all real close to campground.

Campgrounds clean, sites level, lots of stuff to do without leaving. We stayed as base to go see all the sites, great central location. Stayed extra days here than planned. Only complaint would be bathrooms are dated. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Tent Trailer.

Nice treed park with lots of space to roam. Several loops of sights most with full hookup. Our loop did not have a shower/bath facility so had to use the one about 1/4 mile away. Could have used my trailer, but needed the exercise. Large spaces that were gravel/dirt. Roads were paved, so no real dust issues with vehicle travel, but it rained the entire time we were here and our spot got quite muddy on the edges off the gravel the trailer was parked on. Some sights had water everywhere. Staff was friendly, but price seemed high. Saw some other campgrounds in the area and this was by far the nicest. We would stay here again. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

9 miles to Mt. Rushmore, 3 miles to Hill City. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Hill City Railroad Museum, some nice winery's, Biking and hiking
