This campground was a total surprise to us - really pretty on the shores of a very large lake with sites well spaced on level gravel pads. The whole place looks new but it is several years old and very well maintained. Electric on all sites (50 & 30 amp). No sewer or water on sites but there are four sewer dumps, water and a fish cleaning station in a large paved parking lot. Boat launch and tent sites as well as five cabins are also part of the park. Very dark at night but a campground host makes frequent passes. We arrived on a Sunday evening and the campground had been full that weekend but there were only about five coaches there when we arrived. The entry is about 3 miles off the main highway (US 14) on a paved road that had a couple of breakups. The breakups were washboard when we came in but had been bladed and temporarily repaired by the time we went out the next day. All roads on the campground were in excellent condition. There is also a marked swimming beach. We will return here for a longer stay. We camped at Lake Thompson State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.Undo

This is a nice campground, clean well spaced sites. Minutes from the Laura Ingalls Homestead which was why we were there. The only reason we gave this a 7 out of 10 were the flies. There were so many flies we could not even eat breakfast outside even while moving around. Other then that, this is a beautiful park. Beautiful park just outside DeSmet and right on the shores of Lake Thompson. 50 amp, electric only. Sites are gravel and back-in but have nice big lots with grass and a picnic table. Only reason I'm not giving it a higher rating is the flies were horrible when we were there and the site had cigarette butts all over and junk in the firepit which they came right away and cleaned up when we told them but they were not busy so not sure why it hadn't been done. This was a beautiful place to stay. Extremely well maintained with long back in spaces. Of all the parks in the DeSmet area this was by far the most beautiful and a great deal for the money. We did not find more than 30amp, but it was very adequate to run air conditioning. This is a great family place with lots to do. The early history featuring Laura Ingalls Wilder made for many fun adventures. We highly recommend this beautiful park. We camped at Lake Thompson State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.Undo

Great view of Lake Thompson, and location convenient to the DeSmet area. Lots of lilacs in bloom. Nice path for jogging. As far as I could tell, only pit toilets were available, and they were not disgusting but not very clean, either. Pleasant grassy sites with asphalt pads. Very quiet except for the wind off the lake. Good campground for the price! We camped at Lake Thompson State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.Undo

This is a terrific park near De Smet, SD. The sites are fairly large and angled for easy in and out, many are near the lake and beach. We didn't see any pull-thru's. We had site #18 with 50 amp electric, a deep double wide gravel drive and a beautiful view of the lake for only $14 a night; we have a 30 ft class A. Many of the sites are a bit sloped and many only have small trees but these are very minor negatives to what is overall a fantastic park. The bathhouses were in great shape and very clean (the whole park was very, very clean), the showers had plenty of hot water and places to put your stuff. There is a nice walking trail, boat launch, fish cleaning station and easily accessed double dump set-up with potable water. They also have cabins with decks and good proximity to the water. The camp hosts and ranger were extremely helpful during bad weather. When the area went under tornado watch and then warning they went around and advised campers of the weather threat and they opened the camp lodge (it has a basement) for shelter if needed. The staff at many places would not make the effort. De Smet is a nice little town, we really enjoyed the tours of the Surveyor's house and the Ingalls' house made famous by the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House books. We loved this place! We lucked into a site for the weekend (usually summer weekends are
booked, so reserve early) and it was great. Large, open sites, some with lake view. Lake Thompson is 18 miles long - has a swimming area and boat ramp and a nice beach area. Bathhouses were free and immaculate, although busy on the weekends. By Sunday afternoon the place was deserted. Playground for the kids, paved roads for biking, quiet and safe. Friendly hosts and office staff. Would highly recommend for an overnight or extended stay. We camped at Lake Thompson State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
