We stayed here 2 nights because of the excellent WiFi. There are a couple trees that should be trimmed as they are too low for a class A and drag on the top and sides of the motor home, spacious lots, river view, shady. Only 1 water outlet for 20 sites so there really is only electric. We would stay again and hope they trim their trees on the road. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed in site number 51, which was fairly level and easy to access the 30 amp electrical service (also had 20 & 50). Our site was near one of the comfort stations and a short bike ride or walk to the playground and public beach. The restrooms and showers were very clean and bright. We enjoyed the river but would definitely try to get a site on the river next time. The bugs were very bad and the weather was very hot. The dump station had a line on our way out on Sunday morning but we didn't wait long and the dump station itself was very nice and easy to use with plenty of space between the dump and the potable water. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

I have only stayed at one South Dakota State park but have visited several others. So far they are all well laid out, with good solid power (20,30,50). However they all have a basic entry fee. At this park it's $6/day and a $7.50 online registration fee for the days that you book. They have an annual pass that is $30. So if you're going to stay 5+ days here it's worth it. The pass is good at all SD parks and if you're going over to Custer SP that will cost you $20 just to get in. Ok that's out of the way.

This park has paved roads that are a snap to get around on, gravel sites that are pretty level, the power is 20,30,50. No water or sewer hook ups at site, but a dump station on the way in. They only had one shower facility available because the other one was scraped and being rebuilt from the ground up. It should be ready to next season. The sites are spacious and most are well shaded. The park is very quiet with opportunities for hiking, biking, boating, fishing and swimming. I'm not sure we'll make it back to SD but if we do this park and other state parks will be at the top of our list. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Farm Island Recreation Area is a pretty spot with large, level sites and 50 amp electrical hookups. There is a convenient water and dump station near the entrance. We arrived, happily with reservations, on an August Friday afternoon and the campground was nearly full. There were many families and the kids had a blast swimming in the lake. The lake is fed by the Missouri River. It has a sandy bottom and is pretty shallow for a good distance out - making it perfect for children. By Sunday evening the place was nearly empty and we pretty much had the campground to ourselves the rest of our stay. Here are a few things you might want to know if you plan on visiting Farm Island. For out of state reservations they also tack on $7.50 per reservation. Also, in addition to the camping fee there is a South Dakota State Parks vehicle entry fee of $6 a day. If you plan on visiting Custer State Park later on you probably want to just get the $30 annual pass instead. I had no problem getting satellite TV which is a good thing because I don't think there was any over the air TV. My Verizon signal was solid. When I tested the water with our TDS meter it reported numbers as high as 1000. That's really high and at the limit of what is considered fit for human consumption. I suggest you bring drinking water. Finally, the flies are real pests throughout this area. Be prepared to defend yourself unless the wind is blowing. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

As soon as we arrived here at Farm Island we decided we wanted to try to stay longer. The park is clean, spacious, and quite lovely. The sites are mostly level with electric hook ups. Dump station and Waterfill is conveniently located. There are full-service restrooms throughout as well. As for toilets not only within the park but in various aspects of trails. The day use area is easily accessible with a nice playground.

Throughout the waterline there is a beach so that people are in swimming rafting and boating. Large boat launch is down a path again conveniently located from the campground. There is Wi-Fi. We did not try over the airTV reception. No laundry on site but there is a clean, well maintained laundry mat just minutes away. We were able to find some delicious restaurants see tips.

Don't miss seeing the Capital: not only driving by, but walk-through. They have a self-guided tour booklet on entry. There are parks throughout the city and lots of good hiking and biking trails. The heritage museum is also very unique and shouldn't be missed. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Be sure to go and visit the Capitol building where there is a delightful self guided tour. Everyone will recommend going to cattlemen's club/restaurant and we can totally agree. We had their delicious tender steaks and homemade buffalo fries. We also went into town for dinner one night to La Minestra an Italian restaurant with large, delicious and unique portions.

Overall Rating:

This is such a nice state park. The sites are spaced great and so many of the sites have a lake view. The down side is the dog owners. On our arrival the Ranger told us that up to April 1st they don't require dog owners to use leashes. That is too bad because people just take advantage of rules like this. We were there after the 1st and people came out in the evening and let their dogs run as they drove alongside them in a car. Also people played with their kids on the playground as the dogs were allowed to run freely. Many campers didn't have their dogs tied up so as we tried to walk our dog we had dogs running after us. Also you can not allow dogs to run free and not expect the park to be full of dog poop. This is such a nice park, but a very bad policy. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

A great SD state park! Two loops. 1-70 are mostly very, very spacious, level, but don't have much shade due to storms and floods in the past several years. Pretty much any of the lake front sites are great for big rigs, but the site we were in (22E) probably had the largest yard and no close neighbors. Great sandy beach front for sitting, relaxing, and dog swimming. The boat rental shack was near, so there was some traffic on the weekend, but certainly not disturbing. Sites 70+ in the seperate loop had more shade, but were closer together and much less lake frontage.

A few dings: tow vehicle requires a daily, or annual ($30) pass. Wood ticks are abundant!! If you hike the lovely trails on the island, be prepared to pick many, many ticks off people, and especially dogs. Electric only, but if you have a site near a comfort station, you may be able to fill fresh water from that spigot. The two lane dump/fresh water fill station is busy and confusing for many. Only garbage can in the entire park is across from dump station, but they do have recycling, which we love to see. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The SD cultural center was very cool and very interesting. Oahe dam is impressive, but if you want a tour, bring IDs! Weird, but the worlds largest Mennards is located in Pierre :-). Hike the (very) easy trails on Farm Island...interesting history, cool ruins, and pretty trails (just be aware of ticks!!). We stopped here to get SD driver's licenses, and while the exam station is only open Wed and Thur, the gals there are super friendly, helpful, and funny!

Beautiful campground. There is no water at the site, although there are locations where fresh water is available to fill your holding tanks. Almost every site has a view of the water. The only issue we had were the "biting" flies which kept us inside in the afternoon. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

It wasn't peak season when we were there but it's a beautiful park, quiet, and large spaces. No sewer at our lot, not sure if they have some with sewer or not. We chose this one as it was right on the water. Gorgeous park. Well maintained, quiet, and affordable. I would give it a 10 if there was Wi-Fi, cable/satellite TV, and sewer at each site, but that is not typical for any state, county, or city park. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Had the campground nearly all to myself. Good showers with a wide spray. Needed that since the humidity along the Missouri River was more than this California boy could handle. Would stay here again - the humidity isn't the park's fault. I just wonder why the previous reviewer paid $4 less than I did. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Beautiful! We stayed in the East Campground and had an end site right on the Reservoir. We were on our way to Sioux Falls so only stayed one night. We wished we were staying longer. Even though we only had electric hookups, they have a dump station and a fresh water station for those staying longer. We enjoyed our one night of camping here. Sat outside and watched the jet skiers on the water. Nice. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean and well maintained sites with electric only. Has good spacing and sizable gravel pads. All seemed level. Right on the Missouri River back bay, boat launch and away from highway so it's quiet. About four miles from the city center and convenient shopping. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
