The people running the camp were very nice and helpful. For me it goes down hill from there. Sites very close together and because tiered into hill side by door, unusable. Water and electric is on passenger side, sewer on driver side is at far, rear. Pull thru site so tight I had to back into it. But the worst problem of all was road noise from 16. Entrance to park sits near top of long steep grade and high revving motors were the norm. I would not return and in fact left early. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

For a visit to the Black Hills area it's hard to pick out a good location from which to explore the many attractions in the area. We chose this one which is a few miles south of Rapid City. We drove our toad quite a bit to reach Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, etc. It's a large park with mostly pull-thru sites and lots of trees. There are mostly gravel driveways and site pads although our site had a concrete pad. We had a full hook-up site with 50amp electric. It was located in the front row near Highway 16 so we definitely got road noise with the windows open. The free WiFi is barely functional, they don't offer cable. We could not use our satellite due to the trees. The bathrooms were kept clean and well supplied and the laundry room was in good condition. I consider it a bit pricey, but I guess you chalk that up to proximity to the Black Hills in peak summer. We paid $58.31 per night. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Stayed here for 2 weeks. The owners are great. Pool, spa, mini golf. Road noise if you are in the front of the property. Back of the park is in the woods with no road noise. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here during Sturgis and it actually was a nice choice. It's not close. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the festivities. For us, that was fine. The space we were in was a back-in on gravel, which wasn't exactly level. We have a small class C, so we don't have any way to level it. The property is on a large incline. The property has tons of trees and nice shade! It's on the main highway to explore all of the sights. It would be perfect for a Rushmore vacation. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The park is within a Lodgepole pine bit of forest which is very nice. I passed tons of other parks where rigs were baking in the sun. The shade and forest feeling was great. It has new owners who took posession March of 2018. Very nice people. The park can use some work and I think the new owners will do that. Some of the roads have ruts. The road in front of the spot I was in was rutty and backing in rocked my trailer quite a bit so things inside got jostled. The owner assisted with backing me in and could see how it rocked the trailer. The next day he spread gravel and evened out the ruts. Great location as it is between Mt. Rushmore and Rapid City and travel is quick. Some sites have electic and water and I believe all are gravel pads. More expensive sites have full hook-ups. Some have concrete pads and others gravel so ask specifics about the site you will be in. Wifi was free and solid. Not that speedy but solid. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There are a ton of things to do and see in this Black Hills area. A nice 1/2 day trip is to drive to Sturgis (amazingly quiet when it is not rally time) and on to Spearfish. Leaving Spearfish, take the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. It is a gorgeous drive with really nice waterfall (Bridal Veil Falls). There is a nice hike up Iron Creek which is a few miles past Bridal Veil Falls. Look for a car pullout on the west side and a sign stating Iron Creek.

The American Buffalo was a fantastic campground. Full of trees and scenery. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They actually posted a"Happy Birthday Dan" greeting on their sign on my birthday while we were there. My wife and I highly recommend this RV Park and we hope to return someday. (This is a far cry from Hot, Dry and Dusty West Texas!) We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Staff we're very pleasant and helpful advising that the only sites available were close to the highway when I called to reserve. We chose to stay anyway and are very glad we did. Highway noise was barely an issue and the sites were spacious with lots of shade. Wi-Fi was very good with only a little drop out in the morning. They also have a $2 all you can eat pancake breakfast as well as other options on site. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Small sites and they were not level but we made it work. Close to Mount Rushmore which was nice. Wooded sites were something we enjoyed. We would stay here again. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Nice campground, lots of tall pine trees. Makes it a little tight driving to the camp site but not bad. Campsite is gravel and has picnic table and fire ring. Site was almost level but had strange hook ups. Water and power on one side, sewer on the other side. Gave it a 8 would have been a 9 with cable. We were able to pull in many air TV stations. Wi-Fi was strong at our site (E-7). Did not check out pool, showers or laundry. Office staff was friendly and had a small but good selection of gifts and basic food supplies. Would stay here again. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

The most disappointing place of our 4,700 mile, 10 state trip. Definitely not for big rigs and we didn't even have one. Seemed over priced. Tight turns and poor, steep roads with ruts. It's a trade off of rocky, uneven treed sites for more level ones closer to road where trucks use exhaust brakes starting about 6 a.m. Park is heading down hill. Would not recommend. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

It was our first time visiting the Black Hills and our first time camping in a motorhome. Our family cannot speak highly enough of our wonderful experience at this resort. The sites are tucked among beautiful pines which provide shade. The staff are the best asset of this park--and the amenities they offer are not far behind. Staff are pleasant, helpful, and ready to assist with any concerns. The premises are immaculate, The WiFi for site E5 was exceptional, and the extra activities provided by the pool and mini golf were a lot of fun for our boys. The convenience of the resort's pancake breakfast can't be beat. We found the pancakes delicious! Our strongest impression was that the owners are interested in providing the best service possible for an excellent value so that their satisfied guests will want to return. We will definitely stay here again when we visit the Black Hills. We cannot believe the wonderful vacation we had here at such a great price. We give Mystery Mountain Resort a 10 out of 10. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Motorhome.

Entry and access roads were very narrow and washed out in many places causing our rig to tip excessively. Sites are very narrow as well and are very hard to pull or back into with rigs longer than 32ft. After three attempts on a long pull through and minor damage to our trailer we left for another RV park. This park/resort would be fine for travel trailers and popups with lengths less than 25ft. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here for 5 nights, close to all the attractions, so great base camp. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable of area. Roads are gravel and rained hard one night but were quick to fix ruts. Restrooms were well taken care of. Would stay here again. We camped at American Buffalo Resort in a Tent Trailer.
