We needed an overnight stop in Sioux Falls, where there are not a lot of good choices. The camp host (Don) led us to our site and filled us in on local lore. Our site was a level grass, full hookup, pull-through that accommodated RV and toad. We had wifi for a short time. There is lots of open grassy space to walk dogs within the grounds. It was quite noisy while we were there, between traffic in the campground, trains, and aircraft all through the night. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Coming in from the North, signage ("Campground Host") says to turn in at bumpy dirt track. However you can proceed on down the street and turn into the grounds on asphalt. In either case, call Don upon arrival.

I am so glad they had a place for us. It was nice being surrounded by grass. The fairgrounds provided lots of good walking. Our dog enjoyed those walks too. It wasn't noisey and the hosts were very friendly. You are packed in quite close and you park on grass. I would definitely stay there again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

I do not recommend this campground in 2016. Normally, we enjoy camping here because of its' close proximity to the Sioux Falls biking trails. When we arrived, there were over 50 RVs of the SD Pipeline workers camped here in addition to the 20 or so customary number of campers. As we checked in, the campground hosts were overwrought and bitter about the additional workload. They in no way conveyed the hospitality that the word "host" conveys. The site we were offered was covered with litter left over from the 4th of July. There was a large pile of dog poop that we pointed out, but there was no offer to clean it up. By our 2nd day, the host came around on their golf cart picking up only the trash that could be reached with their stick while they were seated. We won't be back this year, & hopefully by 2017 there will be new hosts who take pride in their work & the oil pipeline workers will have moved on. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

A part of the entrance road (about one block) is a huge rut filled gravel surface so go slow. The campground host escorts you to a site. We arrived to find 75 RVs lined up along the fence line of the campground. They were all pipeline workers but the host parked us far away from them next to the grandstands where we had full hookups and a pull-through. Only three other RVs were in that area and we were not crowded. Easy to find off I-29. Some jet aircraft noise but only once (near airport). We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Price reflects weekly rate. We stayed during the Renaissance Festival and were required to use the back entrance for a few days. Camp hosts are very cordial. There is some train noise and lots of prairie dog activity. A little pricey for what you get and an increase from last year, but would stay again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Rating determined primarily by value. Fairgrounds with Grass parking, water and electricity (50amp), with dump station ($0.00 fee). Some pullthrough, some back-in sites. No other amenities offered to justify the price. We had stayed in a similar setting in Ontario, Oregon, two weeks prior to this location, for $10.00. For what you get, the lesser price seems more reasonable. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

For value in Sioux Falls you can't beat this park. We stay here when in town for medical or business. The camp host escorts you to your site. Sites are level on grass with electric and water. If available, stay in a pull through near the stadium. It was reasonably quiet and away from highway noise. We never heard the train and though the airport isn't far away there were no planes during the night. It's convenient to grocery stores (Hy Vee) on 10th and Kiwanis and several restaurants on 12th Street. During the warm season don't miss the vintage Milky Way ice cream place on 12th Street. It's important to call or check the website to find out if there is an event going on and space is available. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Price reflects weekly rate for 50 amp FHU pull thru site. Basic park with partially paved and partially gravel roads with easy access from I-29. Sites are grass. Camp host was available and helpful. There were prairie dogs everywhere! There was train noise and some low air traffic from the nearby airport. Heavy rains caused lots of water to accumulate around us but we were able to move out without an issue. We would stay again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

The campground is part of the fairgrounds. There are grass areas for parking. We called ahead of time to confirm there were no events as they do not take reservation. The park was fairly empty. The host was not at home when we got there but another camper said to just pick a spot. We found one with full hook ups and 50amp service. Aside from the rest rooms, there are no other amenities but it was worth $25. Easy in and out of the fairgrounds with access to I-29. Staff on the phone and the host was friendly. The host told us about the shelters if there was severe weather. It's a good location for visiting the Sioux Falls area with lots of shopping close by. Great for walking the dog as there's lots of room to roam. Our dog wasn't crazy about the prairie dogs, though, who were digging holes all over. Good Verizon cell and internet service. We'd definitely stay here again. We only needed a few nights and didn't need a pool or other amenities. Good price for what it is. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

A great Hy-Vee grocery store on Marion and everything else you need close by. The local dog park at I-229 and Cliff is beautiful and our dog loved playing there. It's about 15 minutes away but worth the drive. Also there's a 26 mile paved bike trail around the city. Lots of places to park at various locations to get on it. $1 trolley for an all day ride in downtown. Don't miss the sculpture walk downtown and Falls Park. Fun city with lots going on in the summer.

This campground is very convenient to downtown Sioux Falls. They do not take reservations but the rate is hard to beat for a full hook-up site. The utilities worked well and the site was somewhat level. We stayed in a pull-thru site by the grandstands and didn't have any road or train noise. Others mentioned airplane noise but we only heard that once. My only problem was the Prairie Dogs. They were everywhere and wouln't have bothered me except it rained the night before we left and their burrows became mud holes. We would stay here again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

Easy on and off interstate, but that's all I can say good about it. Glad we were only stopping for the night. Lots of gopher holes, so be careful not to break an ankle. Water, electricity and sewer were a plus. Easy drive across state line to Minnesota so we could add that state sticker to our map of places been to! Would stay again if we had to, just for an overnight stop on our way somewhere else. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

Easy access off highway 29. Park was almost empty, but park hosts were very friendly and helpful and escorted us to our site. We asked for a pull-through (next to Stadium) and was escorted to an area opposite of the highway and train tracks. Subsequently, did not experience any of the highway noise mentioned in other posts. The $25 a night rate is the best we could find in Sioux Falls. The sites are grass, but the ground is firm. Even with recent rains and a heavy rig we did not sink into the ground at all. We felt safe in this park and would stay again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is no more than a grass field for rvs. It is quiet even thought it is located next to a train track. We heard a train whistle once or twice. We stayed 2 nights. We visited the Falls and Palisades SP. Both were worth the time. The sites are close. But there are so few campers you can be as far away as you need be. It was rainy and some sites were muddy with tire ruts. They need attention. We would stay again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

Easy access from I-29. Level sites on grass. On-site Host escorted us to Site. We stayed here in mid-May when there was no event, so we had the campground nearly to ourselves. We felt safe here, and there was plenty of open, grassy areas for our dogs. We would stay here again. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Fifth Wheel.

As stated below, it's a fairground: meaning no frills. Nice maintained grassy sites, although some sites are better/worse than others (non-functioning or otherwise faulty utilities.) The restrooms are UGLY and I would never consider using the shower! Two comments; power went out for one night (gopher caused the power to trip off). Apparently this has happened before. The second comment involves uncontrolled access: cars drive into the area, sometimes at speed (40+MPH), and people wondering through. A church group sets up a free "banquet" several times a week in one of the fairground's halls. All sorts of people arrive on foot, car, what have you. We never felt afraid, but it's some thing to consider. We camped at W.H. Lyon Fairground in a Motorhome.
