National Parks have a different vibe than most campgrounds; much more primitive. We saw many more tents & pop-ups than "real" RVs. Maybe because of that, it's really peaceful & spacious here. We stayed in a generator-allowed loop, and I felt bad every time I fired ours up. I strongly recommend looking for a site along the river; they're particularly scenic & insulated from any noise in the campground. Oddly, as others have noted, the campground was marked as full, even as quite a number of spots were available. That's a shame, because it's particularly suitable for summertime visits. This campground has a reputation among the locals as "10 degrees cooler" than the others, due to the river, shade, and elevation. It was certainly more tolerable than Gatlinburg, and the area less busy than Cades Cove. Less buggy than expected. We did hear a lot of stories about bears coming into the campground, but we didn't see or hear of any activity during our stay. Only major downside was that the bathrooms were pretty dirty through much of the stay. Overall, the lack of any hookups is certainly a different experience, but yet we managed to make it work even in summer, and had a quite enjoyable time. It would be even better in the fall. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Park has no showers, electricity, or water at the sites. Bathrooms only have toilets, sinks, and a wash sink. Bathrooms were well maintained. Everyone on staff were very friendly. Campground had a sign that they were full however; there were usually a number of empty sites located around us. Generators were allowed to run from 8am to 8pm although most people turned them off earlier and did not start them until after 9am in our area. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a small store in the campground that you can buy essentials including firewood and ice. You are only allowed to bring firewood that has been certified. The Elkmont village is fun to explore with plenty of hiking in the area.

we Had no problem getting our 36' mh in our spot, but I wouldn't go much bigger...this campground is older and was made for tents and smaller travel trailers...our spot was l3vel and had plenty of shade... there are no services since this is a national park...didn't use the restroom so I can't comment but I heard from my brother that it was clean....no WiFi, cell service or tv signal...spots are spacious and paved with table, and fire ring....there is no water spigot at the campground, you have to fill your tank at the dump station across from the sugarlands visitors center about 5 miles from campground so be prepared....we would stay here again... Great Park once you get there - long twisty road up to the campground, but a wonderful spot with wooded sites and wild turkeys everywhere. Was there in the fall and the colors were amazing. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice park that is maintained in a very natural state. Only reason for not rating a 10 is that signs indicated campground was full when there were a number of empty sites in the campground. Bathrooms near site were inoperable for 1 night however; staff were very quick in resolving the problem by the next morning. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

We visited the Great Smokies during the changing of the leaves. Very beautiful, but there were hoards of people. The campground was very full, and our site was next to the trash dumpster. If you can reserve a site on the stream side, it is well worth your time. The stream had a good flow, and the sound was mesmerizing. If you have big rig, be prepared to dodge low hanging branches, narrow roads with drivers who don't know where their middle of the road begins and ends. Satellite service was impossible due to the forest. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Primitive ....lots of peace and quiet until your neighbor (who cannot afford a National Park approved generator for noise) runs it continously. Complaints and questions to park headquarters were answered, but were unenforceable because they did not have a dosimeter... I offered to buy the app for them. So for the first time in countless visits, we left early . I was actually ashamed to call myself a local and the inconsiderate people next door-local. But otherwise try to stay off of the generator loop. Maybe you can tolerate it until the 8pm quiet time kicks in. Plenty of room for the kids to ride bikes and play in the river. Great area to commute to hiking trails, Gatlinburg, and Cades Cove. Sites clean and wide. Have pay phones for use, since no cell phone service is available. Store has plenty of firewood and supplies available if needed. Campground hosts accessible and very knowledgable. A peaceful place to relax and look for wildlife. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

We had family from Switzerland with us and had a large group of kids. This place was a blast! The younger kids were told about the Junior Park Ranger Program and we were on! Very educational ranger programs and lots of things to do! All the rangers were very helpful , knowledgeable and friendly! Can't wait to go back! Overall Rating:

We arrived late one evening, got our site set up and drove into Gatlinburg to gather some supplies. Gatlinburg is kind of like a beach boardwalk, so it may or may not be what you enjoy. Even in the middle of July, the humidity was very high. It rained all 3 days we were there, so we never really felt dry. The campers beside us gave up and went to Knoxville. The river/stream is awesome. It has a good flow rate, and generates a nice sound when sleeping at night. We let the kids float part of the stream on some tubes. They loved it, but the water is cold, so have some nice big towels to bundle them up in when finished. The shade is very dense in the park due to the amount of very large shade trees. The restrooms were cleaned daily, but there are no showers in the park. I loved the park, but the damp/wet weather made our trip a bit difficult. If you had a few days of clear and dry skies, this might be an almost perfect place. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent.

No hookups whatsoever are available. Clean restrooms with flush toilets and water is available throughout park. No showers but you can take a dip in the river which runs through the park. Don't use soap in the river! Portable showers are not allowed in the park either! Construction is taking place just outside of camping area but it is quiet at night. The construction appears that it will be completed before winter. Lots of improvements such as paving has been done this year throughout the GSM NP. There are currently some renovations being done in the campground. Some restrooms are closed, some water faucets are not working, and there are some piles of debris or building materials cluttering up an otherwise beautiful place. You can get a large RV in here, but will most likely have to make a reservation far in advance as maybe half of the parking pads tend to be small. Some tree limbs were low over the roads in some spots and I’d be concerned about damage to rubber roofs, antennas, etc. With the dump station being located six miles away, and you are supposed to fill fresh water tanks there as well, I just didn’t consider it to be an RV friendly campground. That said it made a wonderful and peaceful retreat after a day in town. Easily worth the extra effort to get a large trailer in here and in a year or so when construction is finished it should only be better. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

If you are looking for a great CG near Gatinburg and can boon dock, this is a great CG. Restrooms are nearby all sites but no showers available. Sites are level and natural. Park federal officials at check-in are typical bureaucrats not very helpful. However the walk-around hosts are very helpful. Hiking trails are all around. Mountain stream (little river) is beautiful. There is no dumping station at the CG. It is located across from the Sugarlands visitor center. Fresh water is available from faucets located near the restrooms. There is a limited amount of overflow parking available. This may be a must if you have a big RV and toad or TV. At your site, you must park on the paved site only not on grass. We love this CG and its surroundings. We camped at Elkmont Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
