This National Park Service campground is at mile 385.9 on the Natchez Trace Parkway. A previous reviewer noted a detour on the Parkway north of this campground; we encountered no such detour, only beautiful roads. This is a shaded, well-treed campground, so no satellite for DirecTV was possible. We had very weak Verizon signal; with our booster and outside antenna we could get voice and slow data. I would not call this a big-rig campground as the internal roads and sites are fairly narrow. The internal roads and sites are paved. Some of the sites are fairly level, but others have quite a bit of slope. The sites are well separated but there is little vegetation for visual privacy. Generators can, and were, run anytime between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. There are no hookups and there is no dump station, but there is a water spigot available for filling fresh water tanks. There was a site with a trailer for a camp host, but there was never anyone present. In fact, we saw no official presence at all during our four day visit. Most people seemed to stay one or two nights, but one site was taken by a long-term camper. As noted, the campground is free and, although there is a 14-day limit, no one was around to enforce that limit. We enjoyed our stay at this lovely campground and would stay again if in the area. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a NPS station with a ranger on duty with information and a few books. Also, check out the fascinating story of Lewis's death at the monument. There are some not very well maintained trails for hiking. We did two nice 4-mile hikes, but take a compass and/or GPS.

What a gorgeous FREE place to stay! Sites are large and pretty level. Fire ring and picnic table. Beautiful, quiet surroundings. And Natchez Trace is a superior park. Gravel sites. Easy enough to maneuver our 30 foot trailer with 21 foot tow vehicle. Pretty sparse for campers. This is the largest and best campground on the trace. No hookups or dump station but who cares when you have this great ambiance! We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is a free National Park Service campground. Reservations are not accepted and sites fill up in mid-afternoon, so plan accordingly. Deeply wooded campground with pretty good spacing between sites. Many are pull thrus, and we had no trouble fitting into a back-in site. North of Merriweather the Natchez Trace Parkway is under construction. There's a 20 mile detour on some narrow back country roads that I'd rather not repeat. We heard this detour has been up for a couple of years already, so there's no telling when construction will be completed. We'd like to return to Merriweather campground, it was a pleasant place to overnight, but I'll be finding another route here to avoid that nasty detour. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed here from April 27-May 1st. There is no charge to stay here. The campground is absolutely beautiful. The sites are large, well spaced, allowing for a great deal of privacy. There are no services, but water is available, though not at the individual campsites. There is very little light, so you can enjoy the natural night sky through the trees. There is plenty of shade at each site as well. The grounds are well maintained, and heavy metal trashcans with well fitting lids are scattered throughout the campgrounds. In the short time we were there we saw staff empty the trash twice, though they may have come more often and we missed it. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. The restrooms were very clean. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

We did not tow a vehicle on this trip, so we were not able to do much sightseeing. We enjoyed just relaxing in this peaceful setting. Next time we will tow so we can see the sights.

This is the most Amazing park with a Free Campground. Huge spaces to either pull in or back in with picnic tables, fire ring and trash can at each site. The bathrooms are Squeaky Clean with flushed toilets. Paved roads going throughout the park. I enjoyed the fall foliage and walked many trails during my stay. Camp Host was very professional and did a Great job. It was great to explore the Grinder House location and the Burial Monument of Meriwether Lewis. Also enjoyed walking down the "Old Trace" trail. Just the Best Experience ever! We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Truck Camper.

This is a free campground on the Natchez Trace. We were quite surprised at the amount of campers this time of year. There are a lot of pull thrus, which is great if you're traveling the Trace & need a place to stop. My biggest complaint would be that the pull thrus have somewhat large curves to them & there are a lot of pine trees right next to the pads. It's difficult if you're pulling a toad. We did find a spot for our 40' & toad, just had to maneuver a little. No hookups of any kind but, You can't beat the price. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed for one night while in the area. This wonderful, free campground is situated on the Natchez Trace, close to shopping and services in nearby Hohenwald. Since we were passing through we didn't want to unhitch and found a fairly level pull-through. Very quiet and wooded, the campground did not fill on our weekday visit. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Travel Trailer.

What a gift that the NPS provides a free campground along this beautiful historic parkway. The campground is clean and paved and located in a hardwood forest with numerous marked hiking trails. Garbage cans and fire rings at each site. Water spigots scattered about.

Our only difficulty was that it was hard to find a level site. Most all sites tipped significantly to one side, and it took us awhile to find one that would work even with 4 levels of leveling blocks under 2 tires. Numerous pull through sites . We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

This was a nice, free campground along the Natchez Trace. Very wooded and good separation between most sites. It could benefit from a campground host since it looked like a couple sites had families living in them, and also to enforce the use of generators during the night. The campground is close to the site where Meriwether Lewis committed suicide and where his grave is. Groceries and other supplies are available in nearby Hohenwald. There is no electricity or dump station, but for a short stay it's ideal. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here for three nights on travels down the Natchez Trace. The campgrounds is part of the National Parks services and is free. All sites roads & sites are paved, there is a camp host that is very friendly & helpful. Campground has no services, they do have clean washrooms. This is a very quiet place to stay, it gave us a great location to explore the area from. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Don't be scared to come into this campground in your motor home. We circled the entire camp in our 39' pulling a toad without a problem. There are many pull through sites, some are a bit tight for slides, but many are fine. All are paved and mostly level. We biked over to the Meriweather Lewis grave site. There were at least half a dozen large motor homes there. ATT and Verizon were 1-2 bars. No satellite due to trees and no TV reception. But it was very clean and best of all, totally free. No hookups or dump station, but there were water spigots near some sites. I would not hesitate to return and it's great if visiting the Trace. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Motorhome.

This campground was great! If you want solitude, level sites, nature sounds to lull you to sleep, this is the park for you. First night, shared the park with 2 other campers in the other loop closest to the restrooms. Didn't even know they were there until kids rode by on their bikes. Clean, large sites, beautiful scenery, a great park for a few day boon-dock stay. Definitely will return. On a cautionary note, there was a reported, but unconfirmed by officials, sighting of a timber rattlesnake. So, wildlife is present. We camped at Natchez Trace Parkway / Meriwether Lewis Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
