First of all, there are two types of campers. Those who camp and those who "tour." If you are of the latter, then this probably isn't the campground for you. If, however, you like "woodsy" outdoor rather primitive camping, then this is probably just down your alley.

It rained just before we arrived and the heavily wooded area held humidity like a rain forest (which mosquitoes love). The campsites are ample but not much room to roam around the camper, and many sites would not accommodate both slides and awnings. Paved portion accommodated the camper, tow vehicle and not much else. Side patio was black dirt and stayed moist/wet. There was a small concrete patio to the rear with picnic table, fire ring, also a grill. It is, however, well maintained, clean and quiet. Can't beat the price.

Hard to find even with GPS, and the roads to it (about 12 miles from Hwy 81) are narrow and curvy. We stayed over the fourth of July weekend and campground was only about 50% occupied. We counted 11 RV's and 12 tents. We have family in Atoka and this is the closest CG to them. We will probably stay here again but not in June/July/August. Fall would probably be nice. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The closest decent sized town was Millington (about 10-12 miles). Plenty of shopping, restaurants, etc. there. Atoka and Munford are also pretty close. This campground is about 30 miles northeast of Memphis but I-40 nearby is a straight shot. Millington has an olympic training site and there is a huge naval base adjacent to it. If I planned to visit the Memphis area, I recommend doing it in the spring or fall when the temperatures, humidity and mosquitoes aren't so prevalent.

The park itself was lovely. Spots were a little small, but we don't need much room. The hiking was great, and the service at the guest centers was wonderful. Disc golf was nice, and the campsite was clean. Our only complaint was the restroom. The stalls in the ladies room had no locks on them, so you had to hope no one tried your door. I was walked in on twice. They weren't clean and they were super hot. Not a fan. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Very large park with lots of space for hiking. During off season there are no activities. There were some rehab animals out at the lake in pens. Campsite 25 was very large, but not enough room for camper and toad in same site. Asked at visitor center where to park. They said they weren't busy and park anywhere. Ended up grabbing another adjacent campsite. Park was nice, but seemed to be in state of disrepair, but being worked on. Picnic tables seemed brand new. If arriving at night and your first time there, grab a map. No arrows or signs in campground other than site numbers. We actually missed turn to campground and ended up taking a one way single lane road which was great fun at night with 35 foot trailer. Overall nice park other than driving through part of Memphis to get there. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a very beautiful park with lots of outdoor activities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The campground sites are heavily wooded with lots of shade. Water pressure was very good at 60 lbs. Most sites on the interior loop seemed fairly level. All sites are paved pads, but most are built-up to make them semi-level and this causes a large step down to the unpaved area. The fire rings, picnic table and grill are mostly located to the rear of the sites.

There is absolutely no cell phone/data service at the park. We were OK with this, just be aware. The downside to this heavily wooded campground is the large mosquito population. Using mosquito spray did not seem to affect them, they came in droves. Opening the camper door briefly to get in or out resulted in a hunting expedition for the numerous mosquitoes that came in. The mosquitoes also invaded the bathrooms/showers. This required a dance to swat and shower. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

DO NOT USE GPS with the location of "Meeman-Shelby State Park" to get here if you are trying to get to the campground. Use 7812 Bluff Rd, Millington TN to get to the campground! If you use "Meeman Shelby State Park" you will get to the park, but you will end up on a very narrow road with your rig going from the south side of the park to the north side where the campground check-in is located. The drive is beautiful, but narrow. If you don't use GPS, from US Hwy 51 take Hwy 388/N Watkins Rd (4-lane) North until it dead-ends. Turn left onto Locke Cuba Rd and go to the stop sign with the "General Store" on the corner. Turn right onto Bluff Rd and about a mile down on your left is the Park Entrance.

Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state park about 25 minutes NW of Memphis. Our site (#25) was very large. All sites are heavily treed so I could not use my satellite. I got a decent selection of channels with the antenna. All interior roads in this 13,000 acre park are paved as are the parking slabs. To make the slab level the blacktop is raised about six inches above the rest of the site so that was a bit awkward. The park is on the Mississippi River although the drive to the boat ramp/river took 20 minutes. Also 20 minutes away (within the park) was a beautiful lake. There was no phone signal within the park on my Verizon iPnone and wifi is only available at the park office and parking lot in front of it. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very quiet park that is several miles from anything. Besides hiking and relaxing, there isn't a whole lot to do at this park as the river is several miles away. The bathrooms were clean but could really use some updating. Just a few dollars worth of stall locks that lock and shower curtains that stay in place would make a big difference. Hanging your towel on a horizontal round peg is hard - how about some two dollar towel hooks that actually hold a towel! Note that there is some sort of pump right at Site 32 that makes a loud clicking noise several times when turning on. I recommend NOT CAMPING at or near Site 32 due to this noisy pump. The voltage at my site was pretty good. It would have been nice if the dirt and pavement at our site was at the same level so we didn't have such a large step when exiting the RV. Not all sites have this issue. Overall, this is a very nice and scenic park that is great for relaxing. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice canopy of trees provided great shaded campsites. Bath house was clean but old and would be nice if it was updated a little. Level and roomy site. Would have been an excellent 4 nights if the mosquitos weren't so bad. Several campers left a day early due to the mosquitos. Area has lots to offer for recreation but they are miles away as this is a big park. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We were looking for a place to relax, and quiet nights. The directions to the park are good, and we used that (from their website) instead of the GPS. Definitely the way to go! Calling ahead, we knew we could unhook our toad to scout for a site long enough for our motor home. Roads are narrow, but well trimmed and we had no issues. All sites are back-in, paved and with water/electric. We found several that looked good and drove into the Dogwood campground. Good electric service, fire ring, BBQ grill all in place. Most sites have room for vehicle parking and extra tents. The tree canopy is out, so the satellite TV was not an option, but we didn't care. No cell service, no Wi-Fi. The staff was very visible, driving around regularly and servicing the restrooms. There is a playground. The boat rental area was damaged in the flooding last year and may not be revived due to staff cuts and budget shortfalls. Sad. Short drive to the Mississippi and a boat ramp, easy trip to Memphis and Graceland. Very nice visitor center and helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great General Store just up the road where all the "locals" meet ... think "Mayberry" and "Friends" rolled into one. Price reflects Military/Disabled discount. Great for groups camping in together with many types of rigs. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful, small campground. It is all level, easy to access, and wooded. The pads are paved, there are large picnic tables on concrete pads with grills, and fire rings with cooking grates at each site. The sites are spacious, the largest we've ever had. The playground at the campground is the nicest in the whole park. There is a 3 mile hiking loop which can be accessed at the campground. There is a 5 mile paved bike trail, but you must load your bikes and haul them to the trail head. The bath house has 3 bathroom stalls and 2 shower stalls. They were relatively clean, but the facilities are old. We had plenty of hot water and the water pressure was good. The park rangers were all very friendly and made several rounds through the campground while we were there. There are no sewer hookups, but there is a dump station conveniently located on the way out. We had a great time, though our stay was brief. If you have the opportunity, go on the guided canoe float through the Cypress swamp with Ranger Sam. It takes a couple of hours, but is very much worth the time. We have children ages 7-16 and we all enjoyed it. Also, visit the general store which is just outside the park and be sure to pet the rooster on the front porch! We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park is close to home and we go often just to get out of the city. It is a pleasant, small campground in a state park with lots of activities, including many miles of hiking trails, bike trails, swimming pool in the summer (not near the campground), etc. Unfortunately, since it is so close to Memphis, it often gets noisy locals looking for a place for an outdoor party. Last week the ranger had to come out at 1am to quiet a group of boisterous campers. The "no-alcohol" rule is not closely policed. Over the years we have noticed a deterioration of cleanliness, especially in the restrooms / showers. It is now nearly unbearable, and the cleaning crew spends only about five minutes cleaning up every day. We were extremely disappointed, as were many of the other campers we talked to. I do not know if this reflects poor management of this park, or indicates the state's budget problems; I look forward to checking on Tennessee's other parks in the coming months. We camped at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in a Tent Trailer.

We camped here after they have add considerable rain and wind. Lots of treefall and mud around. Only 3-4 other campers here. No cell or internet access via my Verizon Hot Spot. A few TV channels. Heavily wooded, little sun gets through. Paved, narrow sites, chairs had to be placed on the dirt/mud. To dark and dreary for us. We won't be going back. Rated as a 4 only due to the hapless manner in which the restrooms were not kept. Filthy to say the least. Stayed 4 days and the same trash was on the floors and in the showers the full time. As a Tennesseean, I was embarrased. Someone needs to be fired. Maybe the Park Ranger who while checking me in said, "What can we do you out of, Hee, Hee." Tennessee State Parks are better than this.
