We got to campground for a 3 day stay. The road going to the campground from Oneida was interesting to say the least. It wasn't hard, but extreme curves and steep up/down hills. That being said, the campground was worth it in my opinion. Upon arrival and check-in at the ranger station gate, he gave us layout of campground and told us about visitor center across the road. It has multiple loops. It is a fairly good size campground that a larger rv/camper could maneuver in.Loop A is tents(no elect/water on sites),Loop B-D is rv/tents (elect/water), and Loop E is group camping only. We stayed in Loop C 13, which we liked a lot. Honestly, we didn't see any sites that were bad. Most sites were shaded fairly well and a decent amount of room from one another. The sites that were shorter in length had wider concrete pads so you park vehicle next to camper, unlike longer sites that you could park vehicle in front of camper. The wash houses were clean and well maintained, but a little older. There was one sewage dump station on site and was easy to use. They had a seasonal pool, volleyball court, and numerous playgrounds throughout the campground. If you are into hiking and/or horseback riding this campground is for you. They had stables across the street with a camp store also, but the store is only opened certain days of week. We hiked every day we were there and never came close to hiking all trails around it..Overall, We will would stay there again and plan too. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Excellent park for both tents (loop A) and RV's (loops B-D). Swimming pool in park, but we did not use. Mostly covered forest, but some sites get more sun than others. We had some direct sun in the afternoon. The park visitor center is close with a very small camp store nearby, too. They have ice and soft drinks, but not much else. Huge motorhomes may be challenged getting to the campground from the east (hairpin turns), but from the west should be no problem. Beautiful natural area with lots of trails (arches, view of Angel Falls) and access to the Big Fork River at the Leatherwood Ford area for swimming and kayaking. Stairs and wooden walkways have been installed for walking close to the river. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

Peaceful and quiet park, electric/water only (some 50A), direct access to hiking trails and short drive to many more. We stayed in sight B11 and were able to lock on to satellite from our rooftop system from this site.

Park entry is from Leatherwood Rd and I cannot stress strongly enough that big rigs should approach along a west to east route from Jamestown. Do not attempt to take the route from Oneida to the campground unless you just want to test your skills on off camber switchbacks with close rock outcroppings. I am not saying it can't be done as I am sure many frequent users know the proper line to take to navigate it. If you are visiting for the first time in a 40 foot plus rig arriving at dusk in the rain, heed my advice.

We stayed a week and had one of the three loops to ourselves. I am not a horse person, but this place is set up well for that. We bought firewood from the park's self-serve near horse barn #4. The leaves were changing the first week of November and it was a beautiful place. Recommend to wear bright colors if hiking this time of year as hunters are in the woods. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful park with lots of hiking trails. Clean, well maintained. Spacious sites; definitely a top 5 for us. Only cons: there's only 3 50A sites (Poor connection on the 50A at our site); no sewer hookups so bring a tote for a long weekend. Dump site at the entrance. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Plan on cooking all your meals at the campground as neither Jamestown nor Oneida have much in the way of restaurants and its a solid 1 hour round trip to run to town. The camp store at the stables supposedly has pizza you can order, but we didn't try. Plenty of firewood for sale at the stables.

Bandy Creek is a beautiful, extremely well maintained park with numerous RV sites, most were shady. Nice clean rest rooms and showers are situated in all three RV camping areas. W&E were conveniently located at each site. Large gravel picnic area with fire ring, table and lantern hook. Parking pads were fairly level. After 5 registration was easy; pick a site and honor system envelopes. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We will definitely come back again if in the area. It was very quiet and peaceful. Only heard the birds singing, even a Parauque night hawk. Would love to spend several days here and hike some of the trails.

Do not depend on GPS to lead you right! We drove in from the West from Jamestown. The GPS directed us to take the north Bandy Loop which turned out to be gravel and no place to turn around. ArrIving from that direction, there were no signs, so we missed our turn. Should have arrived from the other direction.

Overall Rating:

I love love love this park! My stay was in Area D, Site 42. Plenty of room, VERY level site (fastest set up ever). The peace and quiet was amazing! Nice fire pit and picnic table on a gravel area next to the site pad. Although this is a good size site, there is parking for your vehicle right across the road from your site nearest to the bathroom/shower building. 4G LTE service the entire time. D42 is right across from the bathroom/shower building, it was the CLEANEST EVER. All the employees of the park were extremely nice and helpful. Bandy Creek is located closest to Oneida where there are an assortment of stores, gas and a laundromat. Bandy Creek does not have an onsite laundry. There are no sewer hookups at the sites but they do have a dump station. The water pressure is great (I use a regulator). The hookups are clean and well maintained. Just beyond the entrance there is a huge pool (not open when I stayed) but all areas were ultra clean. I did drive around area A, C and D. This campground is very clean everywhere. The roads that loop around the campground areas are wide enough for two vehicles and wide trailers. They do have wi-fi but after inquiring at the campground store, it's only available by the store and the educational center. If you own a horse, they have stables and trails for riding. Will I return to Bandy Creek? ABSOLUTELY! We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to the Campground Store, they have a small theater with a movie on Bandy Creek/Big Fork. Do not leave food outside as there are bears in the area (I never saw any). Keep your pets on leash and in your sight. Because of bears, I wouldn't leave them unattended at your site while you are gone.

We have stayed at Bandy Creek many times and we love it! We like C loop but D loop also has great sites. There are very few "bad" sites. We do not like C13 or C3 but most sites are very spacious and private. C 7, C9, C26, and C24 are some of our favorites.

There are many hiking trails, some very difficult, but also easy to moderate trails as well. Some trails' access is a bit of a drive but the scenery is so worth it! Great place to relax and enjoy nature. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Must take time to hike the Slave Falls trail as well as the Twin Arches trail. Such breathtaking scenery.

Also, beware, you will be going thru the gorge to get to Bandy Creek Campground. However you can travel a little farther and bypass the gorge. (It is passable with large campers, just gear down and go slow.)

We camped in section D and our pop-up that extends to 27' fit easily with room to park our crew cab pickup (22') in a back-in site. The gravel pad was very level and we enjoyed the roomy patio space with a fire ring for our dinner prep. The restrooms and shower facilities were very basic, but we'll maintained and clean. Our stay was short, so not having sewer connection was not a problem. We just used the dump station on our way out. We will definitely be back! The CG was very busy with people enjoying fall color. A ranger told us that they're not busy at all after the leaves fall. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

The park is very popular with horse enthusiasts. The adjacent stable seems well equipped for those needs and also provides access for purchasing firewood, ice and hay for horses. The pool was closed for the season, but would be very inviting after a day hike. We will go back to explore more hiking trails!

Overall Rating:

The campground has a good variety of sites which can accommodate most RVs. There are limited 50 amp sites. Loop A has no hookups and has smaller sites which works well for tents and pop up trailers. Sites are well spaced but have limited privacy. Paved sites with gravel sitting areas featuring fire rings. The campground is favored by horse riding campers since there is a stable in the park. Hookups worked well through the low electric poles made it difficult to use surge protectors. Big South Fork has excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. It is a beautiful area and there are companies that offer horse rentals and river trips. Bring all needed supplies as it is a 20 mile ride for groceries. Still one of the most peaceful places you can camp at, even though it's out of the way. They have added Wi-Fi at the visitor center by the campground so you can use your cell or laptop. Maintenance was lacking, but again it's due to our government making budget cuts while still supporting other things. It's sad to let a campground let go. Overall Rating:

I rated this park on the low side because the maintenance of the campground appears to have slipped quite a bit. Aside from that it is a spectacular and well run park and is a national treasure. We were in Loop D. The restroom shower curtains were sickeningly covered with mold and mildew, the exterior of the very modern building (vinyl siding) was covered with mold and mildew. The grounds where we were camping had grass in excess of 1' high and apparently had not been mowed in some time. Properly developed tent pads were saturated with weeds. Its clear the National Park Service is being slammed by budget cuts and treasures for families and recreational enthusiasts like Bandy Creek are bearing the brunt of the burden. The cost to replace a few shower curtains and to buy a bottle of bleach to wash down the vinyl siding is minimal and for less then $50 each in material (curtains and bleach to wash the siding), the well designed shower/restrooms could be cleaned and in excellent condition. The Superintendent and staff are to be commended though for an overall great facility and a wonderful attitude towards the users of this great National Park facility. Our only hope is that someone wakes up and gives these fine folks the resources they need to maintain and sustain these wonderful parks like Bandy Creek at the Big South Fork. This is the most pet friendly National Park facility I have ever seen! We will definitely be back to Big South Fork and we hope it is given the resources it needs to get squared away for those of us that want to utilize this camping facility. We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground (NPS) in a Truck Camper.
