Visited this park again to enjoy the cooler mountain temperatures. The park is extremely well maintained. Roads and sites are paved, although tent site pads are pea gravel. Sites are level side-to-side. Sites 1 to 20 are premium RV sites, not eligible for any discounts. There is one pull-through site; the remainder are back-ins. These sites have a paved living area with a picnic table. Sites 21 to 40 are tent sites, perhaps the nicest tent sites we have ever seen. Sites 41 to 90 are located across the river and up the hill. Big rigs should not attempt these sites. All these sites are back-in, and most will require backing in uphill. The pictures do not really show how steep the grades are. Our site was a barely 12 foot wide strip of pavement with a gravel slope down to a picnic table. We had just enough room alongside the trailer under the awning for two small camp chairs. There is no cable or OTA TV and no cell service. However, there is very excellent WiFi throughout the campground. The staff have a Verizon network extender in the campground office, which provides a Verizon cell signal within a few feet of the office. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Beware the speed bumps! Crossing the speed bumps at more than creep speed will scramble the inside of your rig! There is a single dump station where the line is long as check-out time approaches on busy weekends. The park includes a nice swimming pool, amphitheater, and tennis and volleyball courts. This is a very popular park, so advance reservations are necessary for the more desirable sites. We will visit this park again. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall, the park is very nice. Cell service is non existent however the park has an excellent wi-fi service. If you are in a big rig or pulling a large 5th Wheel or Travel Trailer that is more than 25 feet in length, AVOID the upper loop. We called ahead to advise that we would be late arrivals and were instructed to go left of the campground office, which takes you to the upper loop. The road is paved but narrow and winding and dead ends at a bathhouse / restroom at the top of the hill, which has a very narrow drive that goes around it. We sustained an estimated $10K in damage to our motorhome getting out of that area. Later, we discovered that we should have been directed to the RIGHT just past the campground office, which takes you to the lower loop where large rigs and the tent camping areas are. The rig sites are all paved and a fairly spaced apart, with decent water pressure and numerous trees. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice park with 2 sections. One, the "Big Rig section is the lower. flat, leve,l a stream running along the edge and very nice. The other loop is up the side of a mountain. No big rigs allowed. Tight turns, small sites and just dark and dank. The lower loop had wifi, but it was "broke" while we were there. No cell service at all. Would return, but were told by some of the locals that reservations were hard to come by and had to be planned a year in advance. We didn't know, just drove up and got the last site for 2 night. Very nice park. Upper loop can get discounts, but not the lower one. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Roan Mountain State Park is a very popular camping destination. Campground staff are pleasant and helpful, and the campground is extremely well maintained. Roads and sites are paved. Sites 41 to 90 are located on a hillside. Big rigs should not attempt to even drive through that area. Sites in the lower level area are considered "premium" sites, commanding a higher price with no discounts. The Doe River is only a very small stream as it passes through the campground. It is hard to imagine the ferocity of the river during the flood event of 1998. The paved sites also provide a wider paved patio area. Each site has water & electric hookups and a campfire ring. There are no sewer hookups. There is no TV cable and no OTA TV reception. The park has recently installed WiFi repeaters throughout the campground and WiFi reception is excellent. There is no Verizon cell reception in the campground except for a small area surrounding the campground office. There is only one dump station for the entire park. We watched campers start lining up to dump on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., with the last camper finally departing at 2:30 p.m. Try to plan your departure to avoid that mad rush. Reservations are recommended, and are a must for the "premium" lower level sites. We enjoyed our stay and will return. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Small state park that we found for an over nite while driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nicely wooded area with a nice little river/creek running through it. The park would probably seem crowded during summer season but this time of year, although full, it was very quiet. Was able to get satellite reception after a few tries and although no cell reception with Verizon was able to connect with their WiFi. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This well developed, popular campground is situated in a deciduous forest in two major sections: lower and upper. The lower portion is mostly level along the Doe River, and more open among trees and lawn. The upper is steeply sloped and more deeply forested. All site pads are asphalt paved surrounded by gravel, with fire rings and concrete picnic tables. Sites are spacious, but many of the pads are made for small campers and tents. Carefully choose the lengths of sites online. Most upper sites will need levelers. You should know your site number before arriving, particularly if you arrive after 5 PM. No after hours site list is posted at the campground office. Bath houses were clean, often on steep slopes. Electric and water worked fine. No over-the-air digital TV. Sprint phones had no service in the upper loops, but the campground office had Sprint and extended service at 3 bars. WiFi worked fine within 100 feet of the office, and a second and third transmitter was in the lower loop (but not in the upper loops). Quiet, dark at night. Occasional patrol by law enforcement. Quite cool temperatures for June. Lots of hiking trails,

playgrounds, fields, a farmstead, nice visitor center, weekend ranger activities. Songbirds abundant. Ecosystem rich in biodiversity. There are some ticky tacky issues. A single dump station for nearly 80 campers is easily overrun at check out hours. Most written or posted rules go unenforced. Non-campers cruise the grounds, creating added conflicts with walkers and bicyclists and noise. Signs say "Registered Campers Only", but without active checks, people drive right past the office. Few campers clean up after their pets, even next to the river. Nasty. Multiple cars parked at many campsites instead of using overflow. Golf cart cruising. Speeding was an issue at times. Regardless of the bad points, it is truly the crown jewel of Tennessee's State Parks, and we will return. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I hate to slam the place because I'm sure lots of people like places like this, judging by the crowded conditions! The campground is busy, crowded, noisy. There's little space between sites. Kids running everywhere. Trucks & cars jammed into sites & between sites. We pulled up to our site, took one look at the lack of space and privacy, and promptly left. We gave up our 2 day fee just to go find somewhere more suitable for us. Don't get me wrong... I have kids too, but just like a little more of a feeling of being "in the woods" when I camp.... Not jammed up with 100's of others! It looks like there's lots to do here, but if you like a little privacy & peace, keep looking. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Camping at Roan Mountain State Park is vastly improved with the inception of the new reservation system. The disagreements between campers and long waiting lines are over, yielding a much more pleasant camping experience. Campground hosts and rangers are now very friendly and inviting. All the roads and sites in the campground have been recently repaved. Some leveling may still be required on the hillside sites. Restrooms and showers are very clean. RV sites in the lower loop on the east side of the Doe River (sites 1-40) are classified as "premium" sites at a higher price with no discounts. The hillside sites on the west side of the Doe River (sites 41-90) are lower priced, and senior discounts are available. Be aware that larger RVs and trailers may not be able to navigate the steep hills and sharp curves. Check with the campground host before attempting. Sites vary in length and width; be sure to verify that your rig will fit on the site chosen when making a reservation. The price shown is for a hillside site with senior discount. The park swimming pool is open seasonally, and a recreation room with billiard tables and pinball machines is located at the park conference center. There is no cable or over-the-air TV, and cell phone reception and WiFi are only available at the campground office and the conference center. The clean mountain air and beautiful natural surroundings more than compensate for the absence of those modern electronic annoyances. Be sure to visit the Miller homestead and be reminded of the self-sufficient lifestyle that existed a century ago. We will definitely return to Roan Mountain State Park. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of our favorite places to camp. Most of the sites are very nice some better than others. Bathhouse's are very clean. Most all the sites are very shaded. Some of the sites in the upper part would be hard to get a bigger camper in. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We camped on a site on the river. The incline down to the river is a bit steep but was able to fish right out the back of the MH. Sites were level and we had 30amp electric hookup. We had no WiFi at the MH, but there was WiFi at the store and certain areas of the park. The sites are close but not too crammed. We saw a black bear on our second day here. Loved the fall foliage and be sure and visit the farm at the park. Would definitely love to visit this park again. Lots of friendly campers. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Loved this park! facilities were kept very clean, great staff, cool surroundings. Lower level loop was OK, if you don't mind a gazillion kids on a summer weekend! Sites up on the hill were far more appealing to us seasoned travelers! We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I wasn't impressed with the campground, but for $20 electric & water was not bad. The premium loop at the bottom is $25/night. That loop was crowded and many children were camping. Some sites are level, some not, going up the hill. Sites vary in size but most are pretty nicely spaced apart. Campground host was friendly and helpful. They gave us a sign that said "Occupied" to post while we weren't on the site. We were here to see the Rhododendrons in bloom: very beautiful on top of the mountain (long way from campground). I would have like to been here for the festival but we were concerned about getting a campsite since they do not take reservations. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

First come first serve; confusing check in service; if you don't set your 'camping unit' up, quite quickly, you suffer the wrath, and almost ridicule, of the campground host and even the park ranger. Family member had not set her tent up in weeks, had a pet to keep quiet, but evidently didn't move as fast as park attendants needed, so I heard about it over the next 2 days. The campground host was almost scary when scolding my family member. We hadn't camped at Roan Mountain previously, and evidently understand the local rules. Of course, the check-in area closed for lunch at a peak check in time (3-4pm), so no one was there to EXPLAIN the rules. Unnecessary grouchiness by the men there...lady at check-in was very nice. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.
