Very nice park, reasonable cost per nite, on the smallish side, but I like that. Nice clean RR & showers. Heard stories that showers did not have HOT water, but I did not experience that fact. Like the site pads, large space for camper & tow vehicle. Good space between sites where we camped, but others were closer. Lots to do, especially hiking. Little difficult for biking, but kids were doing that in our loop. Quiet during the evening, great for star watching. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is one of those places I'm glad I went to, but won't be in a hurry to go back. The natural beauty of the area is fantastic, and you must go see all the falls. Beach area was very pretty, but had been taken over by the locals. Campsites are packed in pretty tight, and the way our picnic areas were arranged, we could have had easy conversations with our neighbors...also their dog couldn't seem to figure out that I wasn't in his territory. Most of the sites weren't level and ours required jacking my trailer up to max height to get it off the trailer ball, then all the way down to get it level. Backing in was a little tricky due to signposts for adjacent sites being directly in front of ours. Our neighbors ran over their signpost trying to back in. The two-lane dump station was nice since there are only two non-ADA sites that have sewer access. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

A very well maintained, clean state CG, with narrow paved roads and sites on a hilly rugged heavily forested terrain by the gorge of the Caney Fork river with its steep strata layered bluffs, rapids and water falls. There is a large sandy beach, bike trails, a modern play ground, a tennis court, and river overlooks with steep paths to the gorge. Up stream is a dam with power plant and the great falls lake. The sites are mostly short and unlevel; bring levelers. Paved patios have a unique square metal table with 4 metal attached benches. Lots of poison ivy. Bath house was modern, clean with hot water and a laundry. The narrow winding hilly road through the Rock Island community and in the park are challenging for big motorhomes and trailers; although there were some large RVs there. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stay at this campground frequently, as it is a quick week-end getaway from our home, but it is a campground we would travel some distance to visit even if it wasn't. The park itself is beautiful, with a gorge that takes days to explore, impressive waterfalls, the largest of which explodes out of the face of the ridge (as opposed to flowing over it!), and many nice hiking trails. The campground itself is easy to navigate, has paved, level pads, and well kept picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. There isn't a bad site in the campground, but we'd suggest getting down one of the cul-de-sacs that follow the ridges on the east side of the campground. The staff is really friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The bathhouses are sturdy, well maintained, and clean. This is one of our favorite TN campgrounds! We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Rock Island has a good camp store/gas station/restaurant for getting anything you may have forgotten. Falls Creek Falls State Park is nearby, and worth seeing, but the camping is better at Rock Island State Park.

Overall Rating:

The Rock Island campground is located up on the ridge and there are no waterfront sites. But almost every site is well laid out and each offer a bit of privacy. The campground was upgraded a few years ago and all the sites are paved and there are two modern bathhouses with $1 washer/dryers. Wi-fi is included and has worked great all the times we have been here and we do get 2 bars of 4G Verizon too. With booster it goes up to 4. Our favorite sites for larger rigs (35 ft.+) are 1,2,4,5,6,7, 11, 12, 23,24,33-sewer, 34-sewer, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 42, 44, 46. The park has one campground section that is open year-round, which was great for us this March, when all the COE campgrounds and other great Tennessee parks are still closed for the winter. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

You won't find too many conveniences close to the park. Yes, there is a Dollar General about 10 minutes away as well as the Rock Island Market that is known for the best catfish around and you"ll be hard pressed to find a parking spot there every Friday, Saturday or Sunday. However, if you are looking for something a little more unique you will be quite surprised and your taste buds will thank you when you stumble upon the Foglight Food House.

Challenging for a 36 ft motorhome on entry road and in parks narrow roads. Site ok size, room for car in front. Basic water and 50amp. No foliage between sites, lots and lots of people, kids, cars, bikes and noise. Pretty area, hiked a trail and drove around. Would not visit again due to size of roads and lack of privacy. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

We initially reserved site 37 and for our 37 ft motorhome. There was no way to safely get it level. After calling the office to request a change, we moved to site number 1 and loved it. Site 37 would probably be fine for a small towable RV. You'll want to avoid it for anything of significant length. The layout of the campground is nice. There are just a few sites with sewer hookups. There are a few sites with inclines, some level. Wireless is great. The park itself is lovely and easy to access. Hiking trails provide lovely views and are well maintained. We saw several people tent camping in nice sites. Will definitely camp here again. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Loved this campground! Beautiful place. Stayed here three nights while visiting family in McMinnville. Fifteen minutes to town and shopping. Be careful on the narrow, winding roads that lead to the park. Groups of deer were wandering just off the roadway. Paved roads. Paved sites. Some sites were tight, and could be a challenge for big rigs. No problem for our 23' Class C. Great wi-fi signal. Utility connections new and worked perfectly. Two-lane dump station, however one lane was closed for the winter season. Trash collection next to the dump station. Restrooms and showers among the cleanest we've seen. Laundry facility worked fine. $1.00 for washer and $1.00 for dryer. Decent cell coverage via AT & T. Only downside is virtually no television reception. Three channels, no major networks. Those with a satellite dish might not have coverage either due to the trees. But it's all good. Turn off the television and get out to enjoy this awesome state park. We'll be back again for sure. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

McMinnville is fifteen minutes from the campground. All kinds of shopping and restaurants are available. The campground also has ten cabins for rental, but pricey at about $125.00 a night. But they're not really what we'd call "cabins"; they were small two story buildings, ideal for a family reunion, etc.

Overall Rating:

Really nice campground. Roads and sites are all paved asphalt. The park recently upgraded their facilities so all the sites are nice. Be careful when reserving a site, there are a lot of really short or narrow sites and several drop off at the back so you may not be able to get your jacks down if you don't size right. Luckily, the site lengths are listed on the website. We stayed on site 39 with a 36' TT, it was a tight fit, but we managed to get it in there. The offset concrete patio was nice with a new picnic table, fire ring with grill attachment, and charcoal grill. Verizon service was nearly non existent(could barely even make a call, and no data service at all) and the CG wifi was poor to non existent as well. A Basketball and tennis court are across the street from the cg and there is a playground in the center with a pavilion and volleyball court as well. There is a sand beach in the park but not within walking distance from the cg. If you enjoy being outside and watching / listening to nature while you relax (which I do), this is the place for you, absolutely, do not miss it! Make sure to check out all the waterfalls and such when you visit, very cool stuff. we will return in the future. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Cumberland Caverns is really neat if you enjoy touring caves. Its about 30 minutes away. Be prepared for a hefty price tag, not sure I would have gone if I knew that ahead of time ($19/per adult). Kayaking is a big thing here too. We saw an outfit called Jackson kayak right outside the park. It was too cold to go this weekend so we passed. They didn't show up in a Google search for outfitters before we went, so keep them in mind if that's your interest.

Very pretty park in a beautiful area with the waterfalls and the river and lake very near. The hike down to the Blue Hole is exaggerated in difficulty but is steep and slippery. The camp sites are a bit small based on normal state park standards. A 30 ft site is pretty much 30 ft long and you must park your truck beside the camper, which can be a tight squeeze with the trees. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

We never knew this park was so close to home (Knoxville) and is mainly flat, good highway into except for the road to the park about 5 miles curvy, but easy road. The park was beautiful, there are so many waterfalls here, continuous beautiful nature scenery. We had some trouble with electricity shutting down a couple times, but the maintenance people fixed within 30 minutes of our arrival. Everyone helpful, friendly. The rangers were taking extra time to clean up trash, which I cannot believe someone would just leave a cup or can sitting somewhere when there are trash cans readily available. Most of the sites are small, but we were lucky to get a larger site. The ranger said they are redoing some sites and electrical work over the winter. Want to come back next year. There is an excellent restaurant nearby Foglight Foodhouse, gourmet out in the middle of nowhere. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Didn't have any trouble going in on the roads, but you should unhook your toad as soon as you get in. Easy night check-in cause there is none, just pick your spot and pay by 10am the next morning. Back-in site was smallish, but OK. The water spigot {older) was broken (hose connector gone) at our site, but it was the only one damaged near us. The electric was OK, but don't overload it. The bathhouse was fine, somewhat dated but usable. Showers were just OK as water pressure was low, but pretty clean. Separate changing area at shower. Playground and pavilion behind it. Make this a stop in TN, the park and waterfalls are beautiful. It is in a quiet country setting and very quiet. We will be back to stay again. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Rock Island was beautiful. The staff was very helpful, and the programs were great. The campground sites are small, but they are well shaded. Be careful not to run too many electric items. The electric lines are old and can't handle several electric items running at the same time. The canoe trip up the Caney River is a must. The gorge area was beautiful. The naturalist were very informative and helpful. I would recommend going off the trails and seeing the smaller waterfalls off the bluff and the beautiful ferns. We would definitely return. This is a really nice, shaded campground. You can make reservations the week before your stay only. Paved camp sites with fire ring and grills, 30amp electric, and water hookups. The park itself has a couple of different playground areas. Campground has own, and pavillion. Bathhouses were clean and have had some renovation in the last year. Planned activities for kids. Great park to visit. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Tent Trailer.
