This is our third visit to this campground. With each visit we have noticed improvements to campsites with landscaping added each time. We have twice stayed on the river sites which are great because you can sit outside and watch the rafters and fishermen pass by. Tubes can be rented at office and you can make a trek just about 2 miles up the road and swim and enter for a float in one of the best swimming holes in the Smokies. The only downside is the rates are a little pricey so this has to be our one splurge trip per year and the bathrooms cleanliness might be rated closer to a seven than 10. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

As another camper noted, this is our "splurge" trip each year because we pay top dollar for a site on the best part of the river. It is worth the extra $20 a night. We've stayed twice and have 2019 already booked. KOA camp workers are the best, always friendly and helpful. I like KOA because they will let me book a year in advance to secure my favorite spot so when we stay in April we just go ahead and book the next April before we leave. Love the close proximity to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Smokies. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We had a great stay, it was in the off season between Christmas and New Years. It was COLD! Staff was very friendly and they have a great location right on the water. Like most KOA's its a bit pricy but typical rate when staying at a KOA. If the park was at capacity it could be a challenge to navigate the roads. We look forward to a future stay. Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here a few days in mid-November and then came back for Thanksgiving. This is a really neat and clean KOA, very well run. Everyone was nice and maintenance seemed very good. Had a family member in a cabin, and the cabins were great. Two comments: the wifi signal is good, but the speed was pretty unusable with a full park over Thanksgiving. The week prior when the park was pretty empty, it was good. The camp store is also a gas station. The hours are really odd, and short. We would come back from exploring around 4:00pm and it would already be closed. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Country Steak & Eggs is about the best breakfast in Townsend, and Steak & Trout is the only game in town for supper. Short drive to Wears Valley for more options. Pigeon Forge is closer and an easier drive for tons of options; but so many people, and traffic, and people...

Our site 11 was a back in on the river with a small wood deck. Advertised as being right on the water but it was about 40' away. Tight spots but par for KOA's. There is extra charges for renting bikes ($5 an hour) and extra $3.50 a day for extra parking, among other things. One of the last parks on the road to the national park. This is the third park we've stayed at in the area through the years. Think we'll keep looking next time. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Camped at site 11, about 40' from the river in a "Premium River Campsite" with deck, fire pit and full hookups 50 amp service. Was escorted to the site and helped in backing & positioning the trailer. Very nice & clean campground with spacious sites. We would have liked to have been closer to the river and the rapids to listen to the water. The escort came back while we were setting up and blew the few leaves on the concrete patio, graveled fire pit area, and wooden deck. Very, very nice ladies and escort. This KOA is an award winner and you will see why that is! The lower priced river front sites would have suited us very fine and would have been better for us. Extremely nice people and extremely clean. The store, restaraunt, campground store & Campground are owned by by the same people and are affiliated with KOA. Cable vision connection was good, but the lower channels had a lot of snow on the video, but viewable. The Wi-Fi is strong 2 - 3 bars but slow, very slow at times. Verizon signal was 1 - 3 bars inside the campground. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

We pulled into this campground without any reservations. We checked in for 3 nights but enjoyed it so much we extended our stay for 7 nights. The staff was so friendly and helpful. They assist you into your campsite. The park is very shaded and located on the Little River. Our first site was a gravel site on the river and it was crystal clear and so peaceful. Our second site was in a lovely landscaped gravel site. The campground rented tubes so you could float down the river. What a great way to spend a very hot weekend with a group of young guys (nephews)! The only thing that keeps from from giving this campground a "10" is the price for gravel sites. Although several sites do have pavers with patio style furniture instead of a picnic table.

Hot Labor Day weekend included lots of mosquitos! Bring bug spray. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The campground is located right outside the Smokey Mountains National Park so very handy to sightseeing and things to do in the park. Also a short drive to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Townsend is a small town with a couple decent restaurants, lots of tubing outfitters, a couple museums, and lots of peace and quiet.

This is a two part rating. We camped in a 45 Ft. RV with tow vehicle. This is an older facility that is NOT big rig friendly and anyone thinking it is should be VERY careful. We had to make 2 very tight 180 degree U-Turns with lots of trucks sticking out onto the road and back in. Not sure where the pull-through big rig friendly spots are but I never saw them. Once in our space with patio was nice. Very expensive - but well thought out. Utilities worked fine and where convenient. No satellite due to trees - cable worked fine.

On the other hand if you have a smaller rig this is a fantastic place for families and kids. Great playground, movies, right on the river with tubing etc. It is only 15 minutes from Cades Cove and definitely a much quieter alternative to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. With the right camper this is a great choice. With a large rig that you want to comfortably get in and out, not so much.

Staff was fantastic. Our rig is very tall and I asked them to cut a tree limb we would touch when exiting - did the next day with no problem. They guide you to the site - helpful staff. So overall - good marks if you have an appropriate size RV. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Motorhome.

This place is one of, if not the most beautiful campgrounds we have been too. Location if you are a nature lover can't be beat. So close to the park. Cades Cove is 20 minutes, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are about 35 minutes. Only negative thing I can say is the staff tries to keep it "too clean." We were there at peak fall colors this year, and they literally blew leaves with gas powered blowers every day we were there from about 9 until 5. It is rather annoying. I understand what they are trying to do by keeping the grounds clean, but its too much. Don't fight mother nature. Otherwise its perfect. This is the best campground in The Great Smokies. Townsend is the peaceful side of the Smokies and is not full of tourist traps and traffic. However, your are right at the mouth of The Great Smokey National Park and only a 25 minute ride to Pigeon Forge. You will not find better hosts anywhere. They are great and really go out of their way to help their guests feel welcome. This has been our favorite campground for almost 30 years. Once you stay here you will fall in love too. Rate reflects KOA discount. The sites were tight by the river, but we had help backing in our 39' toy hauler. Wow, was it gorgeous. The other campers were friendly and we were even invited to join in with singing. Lucky us, they were quite talented with the guitar and singing. Apparently this area of the country is blessed with musical people and you never know when you may come across an impromptu jam session. Plus the people of Tennessee are very approachable. Very nice stay indeed. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

What a wonderful campground! We've stayed at three other campgrounds in Townsend, but this is the only one we would highly recommend. The staff is very friendly and helpful (one helped me position my camper just right). They were observed each day cleaning up around the grounds and the bathhouses were almost always immaculate. The riverfront sites were wonderful, though ours could have been a bit more level (reason for an 8 instead of a 10). Still, with its close location to the GSMNP and being away from the road, it made for a great stay. We will be visiting again in August and plan to return frequently. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Travel Trailer.

We have camped here several times and they are always making things better. I would love to see more space between the big rig full hook up sites. I hate it when people are having a large fire and my electric cord is right next to the fire ring!! Heavy rains bring ants, we had ants on the power pedestal and they followed our hoses to the coach when it poured the one day! Please add a water station in the dog area, thank you. We will return, we love this area. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Motorhome.

The sites in this campground are small. We had a pull-through site but we had to unhook our car. Getting out was difficult because the sites are so tight. We had to have someone move a car to get out. The road out is very narrow. Good location to see the sites but not good for big rigs. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Motorhome.

We go out of our way for a KOA. But this KOA let us down. Sites very close together. Dog squeaking all day. 50 amp did not work the night we came in so had to wait until the next day - almost drained our house batteries until we figured out what the problem was. Office did come to fix it immediately the next morning when reported that the 50amp did not work. Laundry very small with only three washers (had a fourth but it only had hot water). Office was pleasant upon check in. Off leash dog park is nice but had to wait for two aggressive dogs to leave. We camped at Townsend / Great Smokies KOA in a Motorhome.
