The National Park Service advises trailers up to only 20 feet and RVs only up to 24 feet. In reality, there are very few sites that will accommodate either. The back-in sites look to be about 15-16 feet. The pull out sites are really nothing more than a wide spot in the road - and in some cases, not all that wide. This is really a tent campground - and the tent sites are pretty good. The restrooms are clean but no showers and only cold water in the sinks. There is a water shortage and the Park Service asks that people limit themselves to 5 gallons of water per person per day. This is an CCC-era National Park campground, so there is no electric and no sewer. Each of the camp sites has its own "bear box". There is a small store up the hill with basics like ice, bread and soda. Big Bend National Park is pretty far from just about everything so the people that come here seem to be friendly and responsible campers, no unreasonable noise and respectful all around. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful setting. The road into the campground was steep in places with severe switchbacks toward the southern end and is not recommended for RVs longer than 24 ft. The sites were mostly short and not level. The dump station was under construction and not usable. Would have stayed longer but it was so very cold I headed south to Castolon. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

There is a small store at the visitor's center with a few grocery items, some camping items and sweatshirts, etc. Lots of snack items.

Overall Rating:

Rate is full rate for dry camping. Senior Pass is $7 per night. Excellent tent campground. Fair campground for small pop-ups, travel trailers and motorhomes. Pull-through sites are really just parking along wide spot in road. Road side slides may not work. Small rigs only. Though some up to 30' will fit a few spots - they won't be level. No real level RV parking anywhere in campground. There are no showers available at any NPS campground in Big Bend NP. Only pay showers at Rio Grande Village. The scenery, and cooler weather in summer, makes Chisos Basin worth a visit. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Extraordinary views surrounding campsite. Well worth the winding road into campground. Suggest you arrive in daylight because the campground is laid out curiously. Many spots are tight to get into and not very level. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Tent Trailer.

Date of Stay: February, 2013 - $7.00
Overall Rating:

This campground has generator use areas, but if you're trying to get in there with anything over 30' forget it. The road is fine, but the sites are small and even 30' would be pushing it. On the plus side, it is up in the basin and close to hiking. They have wi-fi up in the lodge, and restaurant and bar service are available up there. Paved roads and gravel sites. Make reservations to insure you get a site that's big enough for your rig, and you can run a generator if you need it. Also remember that it's 10-15 degrees cooler up there than the Rio Grand campground. Note the price was with the 50% senior discount. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful location with awesome views. The sites are close together, but the place is fairly quiet anyway. You would not be able to get into this park with a big rig. We have a small Class B and that was easy to drive in and out, but I would not drive in anything larger than 30 ft or so. They have flush toilets, but no showers and no hook ups. There is a dump station and fresh water is available. There had been a mountain lion spotted in the park just before we arrived and there are javalinas running around, so be sure to keep your dogs inside and keep a close watch on small children. We camped at Chisos Basin Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
