Beautiful campground with a lot of campsites suitable for tents, trailers, fifth wheels and motorhomes. As the sites vary a lot, I suggest using the government reservation web site and Google Earth. May need to maneuver larger rigs around trees. Generator hours are 8am to 8pm. They have dishwashing stations which are great for saving water in fresh water and holding tanks. There is a great Nature trail off site 18 to see the Big bend in the Rio Grande river and the Mexican Village across the river. If in need of full hookups, the Rio Grande Village RV park next door keeps 5 sites first come, first serve. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Big Bend is HUGE! Plan on driving 20-60 miles to get to any of the sites. The scenery is spectacular from desert to evergreen covered mountain top. The park headquarters is 29 miles from the entrance and campground another 40. Chiso mountain is worth the drive.

We loved this park. It was quiet, dark, and perfect for star-gazing. Generators were only allowed from 8 to 8, so things became very quiet. The sites were well-spaced, with plenty of room between trailers/tents. Most importantly, you cannot beat the location. Down the road there was an option for a full-hookup campground, but we are so glad we rolled the dice and went for this campground. It made the Big Bend experience that much more authentic. There are no showers here, but you can fill up your tanks prior to setup. In the campground, there is a beautiful nature walk--be sure to get down to the river and up to the top of the mountain nearby for the sunset. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tons of hiking in the park. Hot Springs gives a great soak for sore muscles while viewing the Rio Grand river. Terlingua is a great town to visit. Closest Catholic Mass is in Marathon.

Tips for other Campers:

Go over to Mexico. $5 per person for a row over the river return. The same for the donkey return. A guide was assigned to us so he walked us around his village and explained what we wanted to know. We tipped him. All the sights in the park are lovely. The restaurant at The Basin has a great vege wrap.

We stayed two nights in site #90 (back-in with no hook ups of any kind). This campground is no frills, but adequate. Our site had low hanging limbs, but many others did not. The interior roads are somewhat narrow. We had no cell service in the park, although the village store right up the road had wi-fi (as do the visitor centers). Javelina roamed through the campground one day, but did not cause any alarm. Make sure you have all needed supplies before arriving. This campground was just okay for us. Next time we would look to stay on the west side of the park, just to experience something different. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Near Rio Grande Village, visit the Hot Springs. Near the Chisos Basin, there are many excellent trails as well as the a restaurant. The Chisos Basin area is several thousand feet higher in elevation than Rio Grande Village and was 15-20 degrees cooler when we visited, so dress accordingly.

Nice campground, big, lots of variety in sites. There are no generator zones, and some areas for generator use 8am-8pm. Some tall trees, spacious sites, some sites more open, some sites not real private, some are. Each has a picnic table and barbecue grill, no wood fires allowed. Restrooms spaced throughout with flush toilets, dishwashing sink, and water faucets. Dump station at the entrance. About half a mile up the road is a store with supplies, pay showers, small laundry, and slow wifi. No cell signal at all. Near the store is the RV full hookup campround which is an asphalt parking lot with 2 lines of side by side sites, under tall cottonwood trees, grassy field near. Gas available at the store. The only other gas available in the park is just west of Panther Junction. Cell signal available near the Panther Junction Visitor Center, which is the main one. Enjoyed walking the short nature trail from the campground up a hill to watch the sunset. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

This campground is literally a few hundred yards from the Rio Grande and Mexico. So close that Mexicans from Boquillas Del Carmen leave crafts and walking sticks for sale on hiking / walking trails. We thoroughly enjoyed the sunsets and night sky viewing in the campground. When we reserved online through recreation.gov, we selected a spot in the no-generator section which was described as being 45 feet in length. Upon arrival this site couldn't accommodate our 30 foot 5th wheel as the tree limbs were much too low for any RV. Luckily, plenty of availability in the first come - first served sites. Recommend not reserving in the no-generator sites which are too shaded for solar panel use (counter intuitive). We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Wifi, coin-operated showers, propane, gas, diesel available at store adjacent to RV campground a 1/4 mile away.

Park is large (75 miles east to west) so plan to stay at least three days to see and do all there is available. Obey speed limits as they're enforced and there's lots of wildlife (deer, coyotes, etc).

RV Park at Rio Grande Village is not operated by the Park Serivce but rather a concessionaire. Full hookups in the RV area -- sewer connections are terrible, and very tight spaces on an all asphalt 'parking lot'. The fairway -- horizontal driveway between rows of trailers -- is extremely tight and difficult to use when parking. Wifi is avaiIable only in the laundry and store -- not in the RV park. I do not recommend the 'Rio Grande Village' RV lot. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

If it is just your desire to stay in the National Park, then this is all right. You get a level spot with a nice picnic table. There is a dump station as well. Arrive early if you need a certain spot or better yet, make reservations. Our rate reflects senior pass discount. There are some nice Campgrounds outside the national park with full hook-ups if you need them, and they are not any further from some of the popular trails. As an essentially un-serviced NPS campground, this place is about average. The campground hosts are around a lot and can be very helpful. At each site, you get a more-or-less level pad, a table, and a bear box to store food items and cooking utensils. Generators are permitted between 8 AM and 8 PM in part of the campground. Some sites are drive-through loops off the road, but most are back-ins. Read the web site carefully about size. Most sites have a bit of shade, but mostly they are exposed. We had no problem with a satellite TV connection. Forget about cell phone, or AM or FM radio. For laundry, use the nearby Rio Grande Village store facility, which is large and pretty good. Don't go to this park for the campground. Go for the rest of the truly awesome park. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

If you need to ask about the wonders of Big Bend National Park, you probably should not go. Big Bend is one of our favorite spots in the world after 12 years of full-timing. This park should be on everyone's lifetime bucket list.

This park is way out there by itself. A real long way. Long drive but the remote feeling is part of the appeal, not for everyone I imagine. Pleasant campground, trees, grass. Nice camp hosts. What made it worth the drive for me was the tremendous night time sky. The ranger talk claimed it was the darkest sky in the lower 48 states. Exceptional view of the milky way. I know nothing about astronomy but enjoyed the bright, clear view. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a hot springs, walled in remnants of a 1930's bathhouse make a nice sitting pool. A number of hikes to choose from. A popular one is the Lost Mine hike, challenging 5 miles round trip, 1100 ft elevation gain. The view from the top is exceptional. There were remains of ranching attempts from the 1930's to 1950's or so, some of these structures remain.

Very pretty park, and quiet. There are no utilities available. I stayed in the no generator section, and it is nicely insulated from the generator area, so you can barely hear them. There is lots of shade and a fair amount of privacy. Not too many long sites, but width-wise, there is lots of space between sites. There are pay showers about a half mile away at the little camp store. There is also gas, propane, and free wifi at the store, which is nice at such a remote place. The wifi worked well. There is no cell signal for miles. This is a great place if you like rustic and being away from civilization. The camp hosts were wonderful. There are some water taps in the campground, but you can't attach a hose. There is a dump station and potable water available at the entrance to the campground. The little town of Terlingua is fun to visit, and there is a great grocery store, the Cottonwood, a few miles outside the west park entrance, on the road into Terlingua.

This part of the campground has no hookups but also has two areas, one for generator use (8am-8pm) and no generator use. We were in the generator area so we were able to charge our batteries during the day. It's a beautiful campground, reminiscent of a state park with lots of space between sites. Our site had a couple of trees but no leaves since it was december. Pets are not allowed on any of the trails in Big Bend, but they are allowed anywhere a car can go. Since the campground is pretty large, there is a lot of space to walk them without feeling restricted. There are dumpsters throughout the park, making it easy to throw away trash. They also recycle at the entrance to the campground. There is a water/dump site about 0.25 miles before the entrance to the campground. There are bathrooms at the campground, but no showers. The store which is about 0.5 miles away has pay showers available. The bathrooms also have a sink for washing dishes. Even without hookups, we really liked this campground. It's large, quiet, and the view is incredible. We saw lots of roadrunners and a bobcat in the campground. The park hosts here are super-friendly. At night, the lack of light pollution makes this a fantastic place to view the stars. We would stay here again. Tips for other Campers:

Take the Rio Grande Nature Trail, less than a mile long, about 30 minutes before sunset. Watching the sun set over the canyon is quite beautiful. In the winter (we were there in december), the weather changes drastically. Mornings start at around 40 degrees, but warms up to 65-75 by afternoon. Dress in layers.

No hookups but a section of the campground does allow generator use from 8am - 8pm. Sites are large and most have some shade for part of the day. Very windy and dusty. Wind storm came through one night and dust stayed in air for 3 days. Plenty of trails to explore in park but most are located away from this section of park. Campground is right next to Rio Grande River. Some illegal entry apparent - trails around campground have Mexican crafts available with 'donation'. I encountered some crossing river to check on their 'donations' but did not feel threatened by them. Pay showers available at the store - $1.50 for 5 minutes and laundry available at the store as well. Other campgrounds in park do not have showers available. Despite what some might feel are inconveniences, Big Bend is a must see Park. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

$7 per night was for a primitive site at the Rio Grande Village campground using the Golden Age Passport. Dirt/gravel sites are mostly level. Each site has a picnic table and BBQ grill but no wood fires are allowed - ever. Heavy vegetation surrounds the campground and there are spectacular views throughout the 800,000 acre NP. If it’s a clear night, the sky is brilliant with stars. It’s over 60 miles to the nearest town so stock up on supplies before arriving. There are a couple of camp stores if you’re stuck for something. They have a surprising selection, and gasoline/diesel is available but prices are, of course, higher. If you like hiking there are many miles of trails within the park. Biking is allowed on the many roads that allow vehicles. Spacing between the sites is very generous. There is no cell phone reception at all. Good Wi-Fi is available at the camp store. No OTA TV. There is an open-for-about-a-year border crossing into Boquillas, MX which takes you to the town where there are about 150 inhabitants. All the information you’ll need for a visit can be obtained at the camp store or visitor center. We camped at Rio Grande Village Campground--No Hookups (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
