This is a beautiful state park. The FHU sites are newer and a little closer together than the other sites, but still nice. They are a little farther from the river so are a little quieter, which is what we prefer. There is lots to do here. The river is a major draw, especially for day use folks, so it gets very busy. There is a grill, a park store, candy store, miniature golf, and numerous hiking trails. The park is a long way from larger towns so be sure to bring anything you might need. We got 4 bars of 4G on ATT, but our neighbors had Sprint and couldn't get a signal. My only complaint is the water. It is VERY hard and has a terrible taste. It even ruined our coffee. We ended up buying jugs of water for drinking and coffee making. We camped at Garner State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great State Park. Large Camp sights, close to the river. It is understandable why garner is the most popular State park in texas. We camped at Garner State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed there over Superbowl Sunday to a mostly empty park. Probably as few as 20 camping groups there. It was wonderful! The Park desk attendants were so friendly and helpful. We stayed in site #60 in the Oakmont camping area, about 250 yds from the river. All the sites we saw were clean. Cabins are very nice, some of which have air conditioning and fireplaces. Other cabin Shelters are basically little more than screened off rooms with screened off patio table. Make sure you know which you are getting. My ATT cell phone worked fine, I was able to watch the Superbowl on NFL.com. There is no cable or over the air TV service there. We camped at Garner State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice big sites, once we found one without an ant colony right at the doorstep, but the water has quite an odor and is also very hard - can't get a lather up and didn't feel clean after a shower. Otherwise a great park with many rugged trails - go see the sights up "Old Baldy" but bring your water and make sure you have proper footwear; it's steep and rocky. We camped at Garner State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed at Garner for 10 days so we could ride our motorcycles in the hill country. The park was pretty full on Friday and Saturday nights, although a rain and lightning storm the first weekend had people packing up and leaving early. During the week we had the place to ourselves, with only a handful left in each campground area. The restrooms were messy with so much use on the weekend, but during the week we managed to clean up after ourselves fairly well. Can't fault the staff when people are pigs. The park itself is amazing. The Frio River is so clean and clear you can see everything even in the deeper spots, and the temperature of the water was perfect! In the Old Garner area, where the original CCC buildings are located, they rent watercraft and have a concession gift shop and an Airstream converted into a food truck where they serve basic grill-type food, weekends only until the summer season begins. There's also a small store where you can get basic food and camping items, along with a laundry. In another area of the park there's a gift shop run by Friends of Garner, and money spent there all goes back into the park. There are lots of trails to hike - we did several - Baldy, White Cave, Crystal Cave - and trails you can ride your bicycle on as well. We rode to all the campground areas and over to Old Garner several times. Overall we think this park is amazing - it's beautiful, the river is clean, and it's in an area with terrific motorcycle riding opportunities. We'll definitely be back. We camped at Garner State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The mercantile in Leakey, about 10 miles away, had a nice selection of fresh vegetables and meats. We stocked up there since Uvalde and the Walmart were 30 miles away and driving there didn't make sense with our vehicles. There are a few places to eat in Leakey, but they tend to close early during the week so you may want to call first. We didn't make it to those, but the Apple Store in Medina has a cafe that makes good sandwiches, and their apple-cinnamon ice cream is pretty good.

Just finished our extended camping weekend at Garner State Park. We were able to get a full hook up site from a cancellation. We stayed in site 146. They are pretty close together in this one line strip of fhu. Majority of the park is electric and water. This is a very, very busy park . The scenery is beautiful, and the hiking trails were great. The tenting sites were really nice and I would have loved the tent area to be rv sites instead. There is camp store and candy store along with mini golf, and a little airstream set up for a grill. At night ,there was dancing outside the open area near the store. Also, the playground and basketball area for the kids. There is a lot to do at the park. There is a little corner store right outside the park but you have to drive 30 minutes to Uvalde for a store/walmart. We camped at Garner State Park in a motorhome. We liked the area, but the park was just too busy for our taste and the sites were too close together. We camped at Garner State Park in a Motorhome.

Garner State Park is the crown jewel of the Texas State Park system. It is celebrating it's 75th anniversary, it opened on June 1, 1941. Many of the original CCC buildings remain. The main attraction in the crystal clear Frio River that offers great tubing and swimming. The park has many great hiking trails. The Pavillion has dances every weekend year long and everyday during the summer. The park is a historic Texas treasure. RV and tent sites available by reservation. We camped in full hookup site 155. We picked the Live Oak Campground in the New Garner area based on other reviews. After touring the other campgrounds we made the right choice for us. Shady Meadows would be our 2nd choice for a future visit.

The Old Garner areas are nicely wooded but much older and the spaces are more narrow and shallow. There's lots of day use in this area. I think a 25-30ft RV would be the max for most of the sites. But Old Garner is closer to the swimmable part of the river, hiking trails, mini-golf, and the park store.

We arrived 2 days before the weekend and had our pick of the sites closest to the river with great shade. All of the spaces in Live Oak are generously spaced and very nice. Bathroom was clean but no soap dispenser. AT&T cellular was acceptable but no Verizon. No cable or OTA TV reception.

The only negative was the park office closed at 4:30pm so we had to go through the after-hours check in procedure which was a little inconvenient. I don't believe the 4:30 close time was posted on the website or in the reservation email. We camped at Garner State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Although we were not here in the summer, based on what I've heard from others and how the check-in procedure is set up I would anticipate long lines and wait times for check-in during peak summer months. They have a "take a number" system if that's a clue, and you still have to wait even though you have a reservation. So arrival planning would be key if you want to minimize the wait.

We stayed in the Rio Frio Camping area. The slots were spread apart, level, paved, and 50 Amp with water, but no sewer. The park is real nice, our slot #426, was a short walk to the Frio river which is real nice, especially when its warm outside. It's easy to find your slot initially, but challenging to navigate around the park looking for the trails. Signage is limited until you stumble on your trail, then viola! Park maps are not very good.

We had a great time and will definitely return to check out more of the trails. We camped at Garner State Park in a Motorhome.

A big, very popular state park, where you even have to be "buzzed in" to get to the registration desk. I feel sure that is because of the huge demand. The park is even closed to day visitors early, 10 AM, during the summer rush when the park is "full". However, check in was easy and the site was good, level with easy access to hookups, albeit with some tree branches that should be trimmed for larger RVs. A beautiful setting in the Frio River canyon with many hiking trails, lots of wildlife, and water to float, swim, or play in. A nice little camp store with campfire wood for sale. Only demerits are the crowds and a few low branches. While there is no sewer (at least where we were-in Rio Frio cg), there was a convenient dump station. Don't expect any Verizon service. Price listed does not include the daily per person fee as we have a Texas Parks Pass. We camped at Garner State Park in a Motorhome.

If you choose New Garner 50A you will get Rio Frio Loop with less desirable sites, further from the river, for $3 more per night. We camped in New Garner Live Oak Loop site 336. Beautiful isolated setting in the far west hill country. We camped in the Frio Campsite, sites are large, level, and spacious, great views, a 1 mile hike or drive to the more populated sections of the park. Only ATT cell and data service, no over the air television, but a fabulous getaway if you don't need amenities! Texas most visited state park, probably very crowded in the summer. We stayed in the Live Oak campground because of the easy access to the Frio River. I did not use the restrooms, but friends did and they stated the restrooms were always in need of attention. Several of the trails down to the river were littered with trash. Site 358 was very unlevel. In addition, the trees along some of the roads need to be trimmed so the branches do not scrap the sides of your trailer. It's as though this State Park is so loved and used that it is taking a toll on the park and the state is behind on maintaining the park. This is a great park for hiking, kayaking, swimming, and birding. We camped at Garner State Park in a Travel Trailer.
