Nice park, absolutely no service though. Nice trails and breathtaking views on top of mountains early in the morning! Fog covers the surrounding streets! Great pull thru sites and large for parking, staff wasn’t too friendly but no horrible! Not much in the town for food so stop ahead! The biggest down fall is you are charged admission every day even if your camping??? Which is odd to me... We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We mainly stayed in the park for our 5 night stay, but did go to the Star Party at the McDonald Observatory. Some in our group visited Alpine, about 25 miles south. Town of Fort Davis has a well-stocked grocery store, and there's other shopping in town as well. Beautiful area that all should try to see.

We have been going to the Davis Mountains State Park for more than a decade. It is where Texans can go to escape the summer heat. We love to sit outside and enjoy the cool breezes and at night, watch the incredible night sky. While sitting outside, you may see deer, javalina, foxes, and possible even a snake, although we have never come across a snake while hiking. The state park has a lot of tent camping sites and some back-ins for RVs that offer water and electricity. There is a dump station across from the bath house. The main bath house offer a handicap bathroom for both men and women. Because of the iconic Indian Lodge, located in the park, the FHU pull through sites also have cable TV. Some of the pull through sites can be a bit tricky if you have a large rig, so opt ask about that when checking in. A new feature that will start sometime in 2019 at Texas State Parks is the option to reserve a specfic spot. Park Rangers don't know when that will start in 2019, only that it will. That will be a nice option for those who have favorite spots at state parks. There are some nice restaurants in Fort Davis if you want to go out to eat. The Black Bear Restaurant at the Indian Lodge also offers breakfast and lunch. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is an outdoor person's paradise with hikes, bike trails as well as road riding, McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and bird watching. You might also enjoy day trips to Alpine and the Museum of the Big Bend and a trip to Marfa for the art scene there. There are a couple of bicycle events in Fort Davis each year as well as some fun runs.

This is a wonderful state park. Nestled in the Davis Mountains, you will enjoy cool mountain air, gorgeous views, access to wonderful hikes and mountain roads. We have a 44' motorhome and had no problem navigating to our site and getting level, but we were in the lower area (sites 1-17) which seemed more level. Water pressure is high, so use a regulator. There is an additional charge for state park access fees.

If you are in a Motorhome longer than 40', try to reserve the lower section. (sites 1-17). The other sections are hillside and do not appear very level. We saw several MH's with wheels off the ground in the higher campsites. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Longer Motorhomes note that the sites 18-27 do not allow you to get fully level. Sites 1-16 appeared to be more level. Used three blocks under each front jack which made for a long step down and still was not completely level. Utilities are located mid site but the sewer connection is so high that it is almost useless. Only worked by allowing sewer hose to remain constantly full up to my outlet pipe. Yes, there is cable TV but the connection is on the opposite side of the pad thus requiring a long cable. Covers over picnic tables are nice. Large grassy area between sites. Fire pit with BBQ grate but burn ban was in effect when we were there. Verizon was no service until you head toward Ft. Davis on TX118. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Rate is $25 + $6 per person/per day = $37 for the 2 of us. Located right in the Davis Mountains, the park offers trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding (bring your own horse, I guess). Several trails run loops up the nearby mountains and back. The park is quiet and wonderfully dark. It is quite a ways off the interstate via 2-lane paved roads. Roads and pads within the park are paved, and some (like ours) ran up a hill, so may require some leveling front-to-back. Electric & water were good, though older. The sewer has the "hinged aluminum cap" arrangement that make it hard to install a donut and elbow, and on top of that, some are actually raised so it's as high as my valve... our was essentially uphill, so we used the dump station. Some sites have partial shade and spacing is generous. Not a lot of amenities are offered, but there is a playground, ice and bins to recycle paper/plastic/aluminum. Connectivity is poor. No service for VzW unless you hike to a ridge, and then it's iffy. There is public WiFi but it is slow. Essentially no stores or gas stations near the park.... get it before you get too far from I-10. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Probably the prettiest campground I've ever rv'd in. Beautiful park and very nice facilities and sites. But the sewer hookups get a big "Come on Man!" Don't let that dissuade you from staying, its a wonderful park with wonderful local attractions; hiking, Fort Davis, McDonald Observatory. So I would have given it a better rating based on the beauty/solitude of the area but the fees are just ridiculous. Also, the nightly rate of $25 is only the BASE rate. You then have to add $6 per person, per DAY to that rate. So an additional $12 per night for a couple. Unless you are a senior and they reduce it to $3. AND, we had to cut our stay from four nights (our original reservation) to three nights and they charged me $10 for THAT! BOO, Texas State Parks!! Upon arrival we were informed that the Black Bear Restaurant at the lodge was closed until further notice due to a needed boiler repair. And the roof of the beautiful lodge had bright orange plastic taped all over the top - so no photos. I sure hope they use those exorbitant fees to fix things up!! No internet, cell service or antenna TV - we actually LOVE that part. Very pretty area and nice that a state park has full hook ups and can accommodate our 43 foot 5th wheel. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pretty park near McDonald Observatory and Ft. Davis. The free internet hardly worked our entire stay, nor did our hotspot or cellphones. You can drive up to the top of the mountain for cell phone connectivity. Many spots were private, although ours wasn't as private. Full hookups made life easy after our recent dry camping. The sewer drains were high off the ground, which made draining a challenge. We would stay here again. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Bureaucratic Incompetence PROS: Hiking, close to McDonald Observatory, thorough ranger talks, good water. Beautiful scenery. CONS: Paid $20 too much due to state park reservation system bureaucratic incompetence*1. Too smokey due to a "Prescribed Burn" program in the park. No cell coverage*2. Picnic table on wrong side of rig. Unreliable electric pedestal: had to wiggle the connection to get it to work. Then the electric went up and down during the night, repeatedly tripping the transfer switch in the rig. I called maintenance and all they did was reset the breaker. It should have been replaced since it could damage the rig. Restaurants in the town of Fort Davis are expensive: $13 for a burger and milk shake meal and $18 for a gourmet burger meal. Boring downtown historic district walk: only three expensive specialty shops and some hotels were open: not unique, not interesting to us. Cops are crawling the town looking for the slightest infraction. There are flashing speed signs: I was one MPH over the limit, the sign flashed and and a cop got on my tail. He did not stop me though. Dump station and picnic table on wrong side. Not customer focused. *1 We had to make two reservations to stay two nights due to the prescribed burn program. Upon arrival, when we tried to settle this clerical mistake, they charged a $10 reservation change fee since the reservations were already made online. The ranger had no remorse that their incompetence that led to the overpayment and we were not happy. Their business motto is "Satisfaction not guaranteed". Texas State Parks charge a daily use fee PER HEAD: very expensive. For a family of five, this could cost up to $280 per week. *2 AT&T and Verizon coverage maps showed coverage in the campground. However the reality was ZERO coverage since the campground is in a "bowl" of mountains. Stay at an RV park in town and you'll have cellular coverage. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Pretty good campground as state parks go. Our 45 footer had to be set far to one end of pull through to get level. There were many level sites, just not ours. The septic connection is about 6" above grade. No cell service in that area and internet is iffy at best. Park is located in a beautiful part of Texas. Go there, just don't expect to be "connected" while there. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.
