Probably the prettiest campground I've ever rv'd in. Beautiful park and very nice facilities and sites. But the sewer hookups get a big "Come on Man!" Don't let that dissuade you from staying, its a wonderful park with wonderful local attractions; hiking, Fort Davis, McDonald Observatory. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.

So I would have given it a better rating based on the beauty/solitude of the area but the fees are just ridiculous. Also, the nightly rate of $25 is only the BASE rate. You then have to add $6 per person, per DAY to that rate. So an additional $12 per night for a couple. Unless you are a senior and they reduce it to $3. AND, we had to cut our stay from four nights (our original reservation) to three nights and they charged me $10 for THAT! BOO, Texas State Parks!! Upon arrival we were informed that the Black Bear Restaurant at the lodge was closed until further notice due to a needed boiler repair. And the roof of the beautiful lodge had bright orange plastic taped all over the top - so no photos. I sure hope they use those exorbitant fees to fix things up!! No internet, cell service or antenna TV - we actually LOVE that part. Very pretty area and nice that a state park has full hook ups and can accommodate our 43 foot 5th wheel. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Bureaucratic Incompetence PROS: Hiking, close to McDonald Observatory, thorough ranger talks, good water. Beautiful scenery. CONS: Paid $20 too much due to state park reservation system bureaucratic incompetence*1. Too smokey due to a "Prescribed Burn" program in the park. No cell coverage*2. Picnic table on wrong side of rig. Unreliable electric pedestal: had to wiggle the connection to get it to work. Then the electric went up and down during the night, repeatedly tripping the transfer switch in the rig. I called maintenance and all they did was reset the breaker. It should have been replaced since it could damage the rig. Restaurants in the town of Fort Davis are expensive: $13 for a burger and milk shake meal and $18 for a gourmet burger meal. Boring downtown historic district walk: only three expensive specialty shops and some hotels were open: not unique, not interesting to us. Cops are crawling the town looking for the slightest infraction. There are flashing speed signs: I was one MPH over the limit, the sign flashed and and a cop got on my tail. He did not stop me though. Dump station and picnic table on wrong side. Not customer focused. *1 We had to make two reservations to stay two nights due to the prescribed burn program. Upon arrival, when we tried to settle this clerical mistake, they charged a $10 reservation change fee since the reservations were already made online. The ranger had no remorse that their incompetence that led to the overpayment and we were not happy. Their business motto is "Satisfaction not guaranteed". Texas State Parks charge a daily use fee PER HEAD: very expensive. For a family of five, this could cost up to $280 per week. *2 AT&T and Verizon coverage maps showed coverage in the campground. However the reality was ZERO coverage since the campground is in a "bowl" of mountains. Stay at an RV park in town and you'll have cellular coverage. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Pretty park near McDonald Observatory and Ft. Davis. The free internet hardly worked our entire stay, nor did our hotspot or cellphones. You can drive up to the top of the mountain for cell phone connectivity. Many spots were private, although ours wasn't as private. Full hookups made life easy after our recent dry camping. The sewer drains were high off the ground, which made draining a challenge. We would stay here again. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pretty good campground as state parks go. Our 45 footer had to be set far to one end of pull through to get level. There were many level sites, just not ours. The septic connection is about 6" above grade. No cell service in that area and internet is iffy at best. Park is located in a beautiful part of Texas. Go there, just don't expect to be "connected" while there. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Roads into and through state park are in need of trimming. TXDOT and state park are not clearing roadways for big rigs, so plan on driving down the wrong side frequently.

This is our second trip to DMSP. It is as good as I remember it! Great hiking trails, lots of wildlife, beautiful scenery! Great place to get "off the grid" and away from it all. No WiFi, no cell phone reception.. (unless you drive to the top of Skyview, which we did a couple times to check email) Lots of stars at night! We had a site with cable TV on our first trip here, but not this time... didn't seem to miss it.... We were in a water/electric site... but the dump station was convenient as we drove out... We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in a water/electric only site; 30 amp max at our site. There are full hook-up sites when available (none available when we reserved). There is a dump site. Restrooms were clean, but typical state park facilities that are heavily used. We had a handicapped-accessible site, so plenty of room to park our truck alongside the trailer. Site was mildly sloping front to back, but level side-to-side. State parks personnel are friendly and helpful. We would stay here again. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.

$62.00 rate includes $6.00 per person Texas Parks daily pass charge for 2 people. Campsite was very slanted, needed 3" of boards to get level. The cable hookup is randomly located behind the RV, 40 feet from the other utilities. Burn ban in effect in West Texas. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Not much to do here, but look at stars. Avoid the full moon, as it washes out most of the stars. Observatory open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Get your groceries and fuel in Alpine. Fort Davis is expensive.

This is an absolute gem of a Texas state park! We stayed three nights in site #7 (pull through with full hook ups, even cable). The mountain views all around will make it difficult to remember that you are in Texas. There are numerous excellent trails to hike. We had no cell service (AT&T) anywhere in the park, but did when we drove into the town of Fort Davis. We did not try the OTA or satellite for TV. We loved this park and look forward to returning. Take in Skyline Drive around sunset. Balmorhea State Park is only 30 minutes away and great to visit for a swim. We attended a "star party" at the McDonald Observatory, which is about 15 minutes away. The Fort Davis National Historic Site is about 10 minutes away and well worth it. For groceries or supplies, Porter's is a nice little grocery store nearby.

Great little State Park tucked into a valley surrounded by mountains. Zero cell service. Satellite worked well for TV. We had a site in the sun with water and electricity. It was just ok. Great view of mountains where we saw goats one day. We are repeat visitors here. Extremely nice folks at check in, one of the park hosts came by and welcomed us to the campsite, and ranger programs were exceptionally nice. Good water pressure and electric service was very adequate. Very good bird viewing blinds for those so inclined. I think we had something like 50 plus TV channels with news and weather coverage we like to keep up with. Not an abundance of grass, but this is their dry season in an arid part of the world. Very good camping experience! We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.
