So we arrive at the campground and are greeted by the host. According to the host they work as volunteers over the winter so they can avoid moving and the Army Corps of Engineers makes a special exception for them and therefore they can accept no money, no cards, not even cash. You can only camp here if you have a reservation made in advance on the computer system or by telephone with the extra $10 reservation fee. You absolutely cannot pay by cash. We were advised by a frantic host to drive into the campground, pick two sites we liked, and then telephone the reservation system and hope one is available. It took over half an hour waiting on the telephone to get this taken care of and while waiting we were told over and over again in the recording that it was easier to do it on line. That's all well and good except we checked on line while we had internet and we saw nothing about how you must have advance reservations for this particular campsite because the campground hosts are all volunteer and without their volunteering and doing everything for free when union people would be paid so much mare....and so on and so on for as long as you care to listen to the host.... Anyway, after that very bad start, we did finally get into a space. The place is kind of run down with rusted metal bars marking the campsites and many of the sites are sloped and uneven and there are potholes everywhere. Plus many of the sites were really short. We did find a reasonably level one looking out onto the lake but the whole thing left a very bad taste in our mouths. This was doubly so because all our other Army Corps of Engineer stays have been so positive. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Make reservations and pay in advance during winter. Campground hosts cannot accept anything even an exact cash payment and will talk your ear off about their conditions while explaining it.

Very pretty park, almost all sites on the lake. Great views. No gate attendant on duty here but there is a camp host in the camping loop. That host was great, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Sites are well spaced and allow for relaxing. Water pressure was good and electric was steady. Camping loop is kept very clean by the camp loop hosts. Our only complaint about the park was the gate attendants dogs (about 5 of them) are allowed to run free without leash or attending. We did not appreciate being accosted in our camp by this little "pack" and barked at until we chased them out. We were told by the hosts that this was pretty normal and they did try to apologize for it. We didn't appreciate either nearly being run down by the gate attendant's grandson in his corvette as he chased a "violator" on a 4 wheeler in the camping loop. He later apologized to us, but it left a sour note with us as usually ACE parks have great professionalism in their staff. We saw no ACE staff during the week we spent at this park, but as mentioned, the camp hosts keep it beautiful. We would probably stay here again if in the area. Bring your supplies, other than another campground store about 5 miles away, there is nothing out here. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring what you need. There is another campground about 5 miles away with a little store and laundry. There is a restaurant there too. The space shuttle Columbia memorial museum in Hemphill is worth a visit as is the Jail House Museum there.

One of our favorite parks. Beautiful views of the lake. Large sites along the lake shore. We stayed for 10 days on our most recent stay. Would give it a 10 but since it doesn't have sewer hook up I only gave it an 8. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Fifth Wheel.

I agree with previous post. Nice COE park, friendly attendants that care about the park and keep it pretty darn clean. Nice spacious and level pull thru sites with water view, 50 amp. Back ins are 30 Amp. ATT cell service good at park, good water pressure and no electric problems. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This campground, in my opinion, is a well kept secret. We stayed in site 34 a level pull through, we had a good view of the lake and a covered picnic table. 50 Amp with Water. I would give this campground a 10 if the site had sewer hook-ups. Nearly all sites offered shade and were level. The pull thru sites are 50 amp and those that back-up to the lake were 30 amp. Campground gate attendant and host were very friendly and we enjoyed visiting with them. We will definitely visit this campground again. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is remote; take everything with you that you may need. There is a convenience store about 15 miles from the campground but it does not offer much in the way of groceries.

GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude): 31.10667, -94.10722 31°6'24"N, 94°6'26"W This little park is at the top of our list! Such great views of sun rise and sun set. We stayed in site 45. Site #39 is called the point we didn't take it due to the trees and our satellite wouldn't pick up signal. Any sites a long water are great. Nice big sights that are paved and pretty much level. The gate host has been here for 8 years I don't blame them. Sites 31 thru 38 are pull-through. I really thought against posting this park review due to more people knowing about it. For most of the week we were only ones here. There's boat ramps here also and a lot of people catching fish, also tent camping. The park shows a lot more camp sites, but a lot have been gated and locked. From 30 to 49 are only ones open and 1 of those seemed not to be used. The rate quoted above reflects using our Senior Pass which cut the fees in half. Park Rangers and host where great, very helpful, one of the friendliest parks we been in. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Fifth Wheel.

I would rank this park higher if the sites had sewer hook ups. Other wise it is darn near perfect. Beautiful, large sites and lovely lake views. Only downside is the lack of a dock at the boat ramps. They definitely need one. We will definitely return again. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a nice quiet COE park on the lake. It is clean and well taken care of. The sites are large and well spaced. It should be on anyone's list that wants to camp in the area. We would camp here again. Access was easy. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Motorhome.

They keep raising the rates because "they can", because it is a popular COE campground on Lake Sam Rayburn. Many senior pass holders camp here and I think they are finding they have to raise the rates in order to pay for their 2 campground hosts. It is a great campground, surrounded on 3 sides by water, and the boat ramps are nice and bathrooms are always clean. Out of the 2 campground hosts, I only see one (a lady) doing all the work. She's friendly and helpful and hard working. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This park is remote, quiet, beautiful, clean and well maintained. The roads and sites are paved and level. The restroom and shower facility is brand new and clean. The swimming area is not designated as the waterfront is all proctected by boulders but near site 44 is a concrete path over the boulders that goes down to the water and the lake bottom looks sandy. Rayburn Park has a dump station, three boat ramps and a new playground for the kids. The campground is well shaded by tall pine trees and the breeze coming in across the lake is cooling. We camped at Rayburn Park (COE) in a Motorhome.
