Stayed at South Llano River State park one night. Made reservation for our overnight stay in route to visit family in the Houston area. When we made are reservations we were not assigned a campsite which was a concern. When we arrived the park office was closed but to our pleasant surprise the campground entrance was manned by very helpful and dedicated camp host. We were directed to take a stroll around the park and if a site was open that we liked just stop back and let them know our camp site. The camp host was very helpful with information and even had suggestions for our travels the next day from the campground into the Houston area. The park is recommended for people that enjoy bird watching and this park has available it's own field checklist. This park is also a international dark sky site and we were blessed with a clear evening the night we stayed. Had plenty of area to walk the dogs and even visited the river so they could take a swim. Had Armadillo's visit the campsite after dark which was a real treat since we don't have them where we live. Overall a great place to relax and unwind with great camp host to boot. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Really nice park, plenty of room between spaces, many are shaded. Electric service very adequate; however, water varied in appearance - probably working on the system. We had AT&T Service. Really nice bird blinds and nice trails to walk. Very quiet and restful. Park hosts came by regularly to insure everything was okay and we appreciated that. Very clean park and well maintained. Only downside was no sewer but dump station easily accessed. No cable - we had satellite set-up but we were not there to watch TV! We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Great birdwatching! Nice, large RV sites with asphalt pads, covered picnic tables. Very relaxing park along the beautiful South Llano River. Plenty of trails to hike. Not much to see or do in Junction. If you have a high clearance RV, be careful in some of the sites. No wifi and no Verizon! Daily park usage fee jacks up the cost to stay here. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a very nice state park campground. The sites are nice with good space between neighboring sites. Some are a bit unlevel but we were able to move to a more level spot. Nice camp host. Two negatives. One is you have to pay a park entrance fee on top of the campground fee. For two people this was an extra $10 making this a $30 campsite for the one night we needed. Second is there is NO Verizon signal here. None. Not good when you full-time like we do. If those negatives are not an issue for you then this is a nice place to stay. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Rate reflects use of Texas Park Pass with discount. Beautiful state park on South Llano River. All 30 amp at this time, but power worked well, good water pressure. No FHU here but there is a dump station. Sites are very well spaced and allow privacy. Park stayed quiet even when full and busy. Staff is very present, camp hosts are friendly and stay busy. They sell firewood in the campground, but you cannot gather. Birding is the big attraction here. They have numerous trails that are very easy to walk as well as four bird blinds which allow great viewing of many species of birds. All campsites have a covered picnic table and fire ring. Spaces are asphalt, with grass between them. Most sites are level, but a few have inclines to front or back. Lots of trees and plenty of wildlife. Rules for multiple vehicles appear to be enforced and no parking is allowed on the grass which we liked. We would stay here again. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Junction is just about 6 miles away. Good BBQ at Lum's. If you need Verizion wifi, forget it. The library in Junction is very nice, they have a museum in there as well, they offer free wifi, bring your computer or use theirs. The McDonalds in Junction offers free wifi as well.

This is a very nice state park, with lots of walking trails. The specialty is birding and there are blinds situated throughout the park for viewing birds. The campsites are all paved backup sites with water and 30-amp electric, but no sewer hookup. There is good spacing between sites. The negative from our standpoint is that we could not get telephone or internet service. One of us felt helpless without these services, and the other felt relieved to be able to relax and enjoy time in the wild without the anxieties that telephone and internet service tend to inspire. Would highly recommend this park for some one would like to take a respite for a few days. There is an additional daily entrance fee for a Texas State Park. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

South Llano River State Park is 5 miles from Junction, Texas, in the Texas Hill Country. It is a large, beautiful park with miles of great hiking trails and abundant wildlife that includes 400+ turkey and many deer. The South Llano River flows through the park for swimming, tubing, kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

They have 55 water and 30A electric sites with good shade. We were in site 51, very nice, private site with shade. No wifi in the park. Fair service with Sprint, spotty with AT&T, no service with Verizon.

Great park. Highly recommend. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Junction is a neat town, groceries and other shops close by. If you're not in the mood to cook on a campfire, head to Lum's BBQ in town, great stuff there. There are at least 2 places to rent canoes or inner tubes from for river fun.

Second time staying at SLR State Park. Park star. Was very friendly and check in was easy. Site was pretty level - 1 block needed on front tires. Space 21 is the most private in the park, but all sites looked good to me. There are a few very nice hiking trails, both down to the river and into the hills. There are also 4 very nice Bird Blinds that allow good wildlife viewing. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

In addition to the camping fee there is a $5 per day entrance fee unless you have a Texas State Park pass. The park is fairly easy access from interstate, just outside of Junction, Texas. The sites are well spaced and most have at least some shade. We could see through the trees enough to get satellite. We did not have a usable Verizon data signal and limited voice. The whole area seems to be off of the cell grid. The camp hosts were very nice and helpful. There is hiking or biking on the several trails and, of course, the river to float. We would certainly stay at this park again. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

This has to be one of our favorite Texas State Parks. There is nice spacing between the sites with many of the sites having mostly or half shade. They are upgrading sites with limited shade to provide a shelter over the picnic table. The park is quiet from outside noise (interstate). Phone service is limited. This is our favorite close to home campground. It's a small State Park with a really nice layout. Plus the South LLano River runs right through it. It's a long oval - with one side all sunny and not much shade the other other side very shady. We always try to get the shady side of the oval.

There's only one bathroom/shower but it's always clean and well attended to. The sites are water and electric only, but there is a dump station.

It's a very busy park on weekends and many times with lots of family get togethers. Can be full of young kids and boy scouts, etc during the weekends. But during the week its quiet and sparsely populated.

No Wifi and it's very very difficult to get a cell signal here. Many times when you do it's voice only and not data service. This applies to both Verizon and ATT - though ATT does work some. Mind you, this includes using a Wilson Cell Phone Booster. Without the booster? Forget it.

I gave it a 9 - if it had Wifi or Cell phone access it would easily be a 10. We camped at South Llano River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Junction is a pretty basic small town with not much to do. But it's also a friendly little Texas berg like many old small towns all across the state. Fort McKavett State Historic Site is nearby and is worth a visit - an old fort in the chain of forts that protected settlers in the mid-1800s. It's been spruced up and is as interesting as it is remote.
