This is a very poorly designed park. The roads are narrow. The spaces are short and narrow. The dump station is on a slope. Quiet hours are not enforced on the weekend as I had a close neighbor in a tent who had their TV blaring until 12. During the week it was quiet. I will stay here again. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The park is still not fully operational since Hurricane Harvey. I stayed in site #15 which is a great site! It is level and there are trees all around. Even though there are a lot of trees, satellite reception is still great as long as the satellite is on the road end of the campsite. The only thing open in the park is the RV campground and the restrooms and showers. I've always liked this park. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The only open camping area is Hilltop (W/E) and getting level at some sites can be a problem. Most sites are small and narrow and sometimes separated only by a wooden rail fence, sites back to shrubs/trees, little sun. Dusk till dawn mosquitoes rule here so bring appropriate clothing and repellent (April). Toilet/showers are clean and everything inside works which is a plus for a TSP. Due to Harvey damage the Village Slough bridge is closed and areas beyond that inaccessible. The dump station is on a grade and tanks wont completely empty. This park is OK for a night stop over, staff was friendly and provided a list of local food establishments/shopping. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

A great camping value at $15/night for water+electric, but pretty much everything else in the park is still closed from hurricane damage with no timeline for reopening. They continue to charge a $3/person use fee, even though there is nothing to "use" other than your campsite. With so many trees down and ravines of standing water next to campsites, there was ample breeding ground for mosquitoes and we felt them. Some sites were missing a picnic table or fire ring. Rangers were attentive, patrolling the campground and talking with guests. But I wouldn't make this a destination until more of the park is back open. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This was a very quiet park during our New Year's visit. There were only 6 or so other campers. Except for the camping area, the park was still closed because of hurricane damage, probably contributing to the quiet and calm. The gate was locked at 8:00 in the evening, so no drive-throughs - nice. The sites are fairly well spaced with some vegetation, which contributed to the visual separation. Some sites have significant slope, so would likely require some leveling blocks. The sites are nice and long. Our site had 30 amps that was a bit weak. If we had too much electrical pull, it went down below 103 volts and our power management system would cut power. It was not a big problem, we just had to use care, but it might be an issue if the park were fuller with everyone using power. We did not pick up the park WiFi, but Verizon data was very strong. We were able to find the DirecTV satellite with our portable dish; some sites would be very difficult because of the tree cover. It was not a big issue for us, since it was cold and we were tightly shut up, but there is a paper mill somewhere around that we could smell at times - not a pleasant smell. It was nice and dark at night, except for a very bright light at the dump station. We did not use the bathroom facilities, but checked them out and they looked to be in good shape. We would stay at this park again if in the area, but would not consider it a destination park. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Since most of the State Park was closed, we did not get to try any of the trails. Big Thicket National Preserve is about 30 minutes away with some wonderful hiking trails. There is a Wal-Mart about 10 minutes from the park. Beaumont is about 30 minutes away with full shopping and restaurants.

You are greeted at the campground entrance by the ranger in the station. Add $3 per person per day for park access. After having our license plate stolen the day before, we were happy to be in a secure location. All the Easter campers left Sunday morning and there were only a couple of trailers here. The staff takes great pride in keeping the restrooms/showers clean. But be sure to dry off the shower tile seat, as the excess bleach will decolor your towel/clothes. They could use an extra hook for clothes on the door. One afternoon, we heard live music from upstream, which was great.. The rangers made several rounds per day to ensure that all was well with us campers. We enjoyed great golf nearby and did not see any alligators. I was able to get WiFi with my BearExtender booster. Verizon worked well too. We look forward to visiting other Texas State parks. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We came in on a Saturday so the small campground was full but on Sunday night there were only 4 sites occupied. We had a nice long pad with shade trees. One tree in the back had a large limb ready to fall so we stayed farther forward. We told the ranger as leaving and the campsite was immediately closed until they could take the limb down. The picnic table was at a different level because of the hilly terrain so I liked how they had individualized the walkway between the camper and table. Overall Rating:

We spent a week at this delightful small park on the outskirts of Beaumont, Texas in the suburb of Lumberton. While much of the park was severely damaged by recent flooding, great steps have been made in restoring the park and all of the electric/water spots are open. However, the walk-in tent spots are currently closed. The spots that are available are a little closer together than you will find in most state parks, but some are separated by thick growth and trees that provide a good deal of privacy. The spots are packed gravel and relatively level. They all come with a picnic table, benches, fire pit and raised tent platform. Facilties are in good shape and well cared for. There is Wi-Fi in the park, however, it's extremely slow (around 128kbps) so don't rely on it for anything substantial. The park has some wonderful trails through some primoridal bayou country. While you won't get any great vistas, it's quite peacful and beautiful land. However, don't forget this is lowland to be sure, if it rains, the trails can get quite messy quickly, especially with the tracks from the repair vehicles. Be prepared for some messy shoes. Overall Rating:

$15 per night was for a mostly level asphalt pad surrounded by sand/gravel site (#20) with 30-amp electric and water. Several sites can accommodate a 40'+ RV (like mine) and tow with room to spare. I don't consider the campground steep...it does have a slope but it's not scary. The dump station is sloped downhill in one direction and, of course, uphill on the other side but quite easy to maneuver around if you want to change your approach direction. All sites have a picnic table, fire ring with bench seats on two sides, and tent pad. Sites are separated by post and rail fencing. It was pleasantly quiet during my stay. The campground and surrounding area are home to rich bio-diversity. The campground office was staffed by a most friendly, informative ranger who provided maps of the park trails, information on the local amenities, and Big Thicket National Forest. There are many activities available, which you can find listed on their website as well as in the brochures they give you. The campground is only a couple of miles outside Lumberton where most any amenity is available. AT&T cell reception is adequate for texting and voice. I used my Verizon jetpack for internet access. I received 12 digital over-the-air TV stations and many radio stations. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This state park has a lot of potential. Right now a good portion of it is closed due to flooding. This has apparently been the case for quite a while. From the maps you can see there are a lot of hiking and biking trails currently closed. So for that fact, I can only review what I experienced. The spots are very small but level. The location is great. Beaumont is close and it's an easy spot off the highway. Only 30 amp is available so keep that in mind. Good for a quick stop over for sure. Texas state parks charge $3/night per person unless you have the state park pass. This pass is well worth it if you're going to stay more than a week or so in Texas state parks. You can buy this at any state park before you check to immediately get your savings. Site accessibility (Easy to navigate and good roads in and out. Sites were level) - 5 Campground location (Close to Beaumont) - 4 Nearby amenities (Everything you could need was nearby) - 5 Site Privacy (Sites were very small. A few had decent privacy but most did not) - 2 Campground amenities (No laundry. Dumpsters were easily accessible.) - 3 Dog friendly (If the majority of the park wasn't closed, this would have had great hiking trails for the pups but right now most of the park is closed) - 2 Activities (There will be a ton of hiking once they open the rest of the park. Right now, limited activities) - 2 Cost ($15/night for 30 amp W/E + another $3/day per person unless you have the Texas state park pass) - 4 Staff friendliness (Staff was nice but came knocking on my door to give me gate codes. Not really necessary) - 4 Connectivity (Rough signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon but manageable. Great OTA) - 3 Total rating = 3.4. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground is very close to town, which makes it easy to run and get the few things you always forget. (but yet you're still camping in the sticks). Canoeing, swimming, biking, and hiking in park. Sites are very close together, but level. Most have very good shade and cover between sites. Others are better suited camping with a friend. No 50 AMP or sewer. Staff was polite and helpful, with the exception of one grumpy ranger. He insisted that I come check in prior to finishing eating breakfast at 8:30AM. (we had reservations, pre-paid and showed up after the 5PM closing the night before). Just one guy having a bad day. We would return. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.
