The park was extremely well laid out and easy to navigate. The sites were easy to back or pull into. All the connections were functional and well within reach of the coach. The space provided was large and roomy. The road around was very easy to navigate and find my spot. It is not lit well in the evenings, so bring a flashlight if you are a late check in as I was.

The local area is nice and easy get around. The drive to the beach and onto it was a unique experience. Be sure to get a beach tag for your vehicle, they are cheap.

I was there just after Hurricane Harvey and they had cleaned up pretty well in this area. The waters were still dirty looking and I suspect will be for some time as the Colorado River dumps into the Gulf at the park. It was dumping muddy water and the trash from the flood was washing right back up on the beach. No ones fault, it just was.

I don't know if the recent hurricane had an effect or not, but the water coming into my coach had a brownish color to it. Tasted fine, but after I figured it out I switched to drinking bottled water.

Side note: Bring bug spray. While there I don't know if something was different or what, but the mosquito's were ferocious. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Bring groceries. I like to buy where I am staying to boost the local economy, but the drive to town is long and there is not much of a town to speak of.

Great place to get away from the usual beach crowd. We stayed in the north loop, which is smaller and a little more roomy. Wifi is basically non-existent in the north loop but worked pretty good in the south loop. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

Super clean park and nice people. Self serve laundry and ice is great if you are involved in after hour activities. Gras is mowed, neat, and I never had any ants. Mosquitoes were only bad right at dusk for me. Can hardly wait to get back down there. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

LCRA Kayak trip up the river if you get the chance. Beach is crowded and no security but it is not part of the park or LCRA. There is a day use fee for park, it is mentioned on a couple of sign up pages. People complained they were not expecting the extra cost. Somehow I understood the fee from the start. I do not like online booking but its always good to call and confirm with a real person that you have completed their process.

I would give it a 10 but most of the spaces were back-in spaces. We prefer drive thru! Otherwise this was a really nice place and very close to the beach. Got mixed up with office location, restroom and showers and never used them. The Museum staff was very helpful with most of the check-in and answering questions. We will come back and use again. They were dog friendly which helped b/c we took our dogs for the first time. It was a great time and beautiful area. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring groceries otherwise you will have to drive into Bay City for the nearest grocery/Walmart store. The RV park also had their own piers to fish which was great. Plentiful restroom all over, RV parks, museum and 3rd one by the larger parking lot and pier area.

Excellent facilities, with a notable exception -WiFi unusable to the point of non-existence. Great location to access Colorado River or East & West Matagorda bays. Sites are generously spaced, and the place was very well kept. Would have given it a 9 out of ten but for the WiFi issue, which is inexcusable in 2016. This was our second stay here and we had a few things to add. Most points from our first review still stand, but a few things have changed. They have raised the price of the waterfront sites to $37. This time there were quite a few mosquitoes, more trash on the beach than before, and the county has enacted a swimming ban for 400 feet either side of the jetties. We really enjoyed all the pelicans and seagulls that fished for there meals nearby. Overall still nice and peaceful though, and we plan to return. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

Rate is for a site directly on a river flowing into the Gulf. But I don't know if that's any big deal here. All have pretty good views & for $10 less. This is an excellent well maintained campground of the first order. Don't hesitate to come here. The concrete pads are 60 to 70 foot long & seem to be absolutely level. And all sit in lush grass. Each pad has a really nice large radius extension to it 10 feet in the direction from which you back in. The pads are spaced 30 feet from each other. Each site also has a 20 x 20 concrete pad with a large concrete picnic table on it. They have some pull thru sites, too. Bring your fishing pole. It's the big thing here and easy to do right in the river while sitting in a comfortable chair. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Love this park been coming here 4 times a year for the last 6 years... The only down fall is can't use the the north side lighted pier because of outside traffic... I pay to rent a site for 3 to 5 days and pay the extra 5 dollar per person a day and can't even fish off the private pier...there should be a coded gate from the road so that paying customers can use the pier on the north side. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

We really enjoyed our stay at this park. Check-in was easy and the staff was friendly. Driveways and parking pads are spacious and level. Utilities are within easy reach. Grounds are kept very clean. One of the hosts even scrubs all parts of the concrete tables after each campsite is vacated! Restrooms, showers, and laundromat were all in good shape. The nature center has a small gift shop and nature displays. If you want them, wifi and cell coverage are both good. The only down side is the $5 per person per day fee that they add to the campsite fees.

There are no shade trees, but the sea breeze keeps things comfortable. No campfires allowed but you can use your charcoal or propane grill. Our site was just a few steps from the Colorado River and its 2 fishing piers. The gulf is also within walking distance and has a very long and large pier. The beach was in pristine condition when we were there! Great sand, clean water, no trash, no seaweed, no jellyfish, and very few people!

At night the campground was very quiet and despite a few street lights, the sky was very dark, providing for excellent star-gazing. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

Amazing park, located where the Colorado River goes into the Gulf. Amazing people, excellent programs at the Nature Center. Staff goes above and beyond to help. Each site is washed down and cleaned after each guest leaves. Lighted fishing piers. Take all the groceries, etc., you need as stores are about 50 miles away in Bay City. We have been camping here for years. Very quiet down here. Love, love, love it here. Lot spacing is spacious with sunny/open exposure. Site surface is a concrete pad and features a picnic table. Lovely, low key, very well maintained park, located where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of Mexico. There are two RV loops; the south loop is closest to the Gulf and the Nature Center, while the north loop is closest to the office and the boat launch. Both loops have back-in sites on the outside of the loop and pull-throughs on the inside. All the sites are large enough to accommodate big rigs (ours is 41' plus tow vehicle) and have 30/50 amp service, water and sewer.

We had a back-in site on the north loop that backed right up to the river, about 25 feet behind our rig, with a beautiful view out our windows of the river looking down towards the Gulf. We saw lots of waterfowl and other animals out our window. There are very few trees and nothing to break the wind coming in off the Gulf, so it can be quite blustery at times.

The park offers free Internet, but we couldn't pick it up on the north loop; we heard it was better on the south loop, especially close to the Nature Center. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Major activity is fishing; there are four fishing piers including one over the Gulf. They rent fishing tackle and kayaks. There is a self-guided kayak trail through the wetlands in the park. Birding is also popular. Nature Center is small and aimed at young children. Closest real shopping (including grocery and gas) is in Bay City, about a 40 minute drive to the north.

This campground is very well maintained by LCRA. The sites are all level, concrete with large concrete patios, full hookups, and some spacing with grass between sites. Some sites back up to the river and I can say there's not a bad site in this park. There are two very nice lighted fishing piers available to all in the park and day visitors as well. The beach is a pretty good walk from the park so I suggest driving to the public beach access road and going on down a ways to get a nice private piece of gulf front property to enjoy but be prepared to pay a $10 yearly permit fee to drive on the beach. I would have rated this park higher but the day fee per person is a little high to me, we paid $5.00 per person per day in addition to our daily site fee; we had five people so this was $25.00 per day in day use fees. Maybe LCRA could justify this if they offered more than a few lighted fishing piers, especially considering the beach is sometimes not an option due to massive amounts of seaweed being present. Maybe the park should consider adding a swimming pool and hot tub or some other amenities to warrant such high day use fees. Everyone that we encountered that worked at the park was very kind and helpful. We would return here. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of the nicest places I have stayed. It is clean and well-taken care of. Sites are paved with newly-paved picnic table areas. I nearly always stay in state and national parks, and this also is government-owned. Beautiful beach on Gulf of Mexico and fishing pier is about 1000 feet away. I could not get their Wi-Fi signal but Verizon was decent and I used my hotspot. One nice thing is that they offer winter weekly and monthly rates. Yes, they do charge a daily rate plus the camping fee, but it is only $2 for Texas residents who are over 65. (I am not a Texas resident but they charged me only $2 anyway.) I will definitely come back for a longer stay sometime. Sites do vary in cost depending on location, so check before you reserve. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

I am posting this as a fee warning for all potential campers. We were to stay here for a week at $245/week. However, what is not clear to you upon making reservation, is that the park charges you a daily user fee in addition to your daily or weekly rate. The daily user rate is $5/day per person. For 4 persons that is an additional $20/day for 7 days if we had gone thru with our reservation. An additional $140 per week to equal $390/week. That is a bit steep for a week for us. They told us that they just starting charging the additional daily entrance fee. Well, I think it is a bad idea. We chose not to stay. Wish we would have known earlier. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very clean park. River access and a short stretch of beach front. Wi-Fi access is only available in the half of the park closest to beach, the other half only has access of you walk over to the headquarters (small inconvenience). The only negative thing I can say about this park is the lack of shade trees, otherwise the park is immaculate and very well maintained including showers, and restrooms. There is also a small play area for the kids. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.
