Unique landscape: I had no idea there were sand dunes in West Texas and that alone made this park worth the stop. Although there was no shade and no privacy between sites, we really enjoyed this two night stop on our way to Arizona. The bathrooms were not terribly clean, but there are free showers available. Site 2 was level and we liked having a pull through. Distant highway sounds and distant train sounds were comforting and not disturbing at all. I'll make a note that it would be a great lunch stop off of Highway 20, even if we can't camp here. We purchased a Texas State Park Pass due to the number of times we pass through, but for those who don't have one, you can still use the Visitor Center and the Nature Walk free of charge if you're just passing through. We will definitely camp here again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed for 2 nights as a break during our TN to CA trek. We paid $15 per night plus $4 per person per day (2 people). Total was $23/night. That's a bargain in our book! There were no additional fees or taxes. Yes - the campground is basically a long skinny parking lot with parallel parking but you're parking in the midst of really cool sand dunes. From Site #5, we had views of the sand dunes from our windshield and all windows on our passenger side. We thought it was pretty neat - not something you see everyday and certainly not what you'd expect to see in the middle of West Texas. Hook-ups worked perfectly. Bathrooms and showers were clean. The dump station has good access even for big rigs towing. Our site was plenty big for our 40' motorhome plus Jeep. We felt even a 45' rig with tow could have fit as well. We un-hooked our toad so we had optimal maneuverability to get into our site. However, it's feasible you wouldn't have to un-hook at all. We were not the only 40' MH with toad in the CG. Suggest arriving early for best site selections (size and hook-ups). We did not make an advance reservation. We rolled in about 3pm on a Tuesday. It seemed the CG was generally empty until 3-4pm but full by nightfall. We felt this was a great stop for a couple of nights while traversing West TX and enjoyed playing on the dunes. Kids would LOVE it! We could not hear any highway noise. There is a very dim sound of trains in the distance. It's hard to imagine it would be loud enough to disturb anyone. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a fun and different type of stop. The price is reasonable. It's way better (quieter and safer) than a Walmart or a Rest Stop.

Arrived after office was closed (4:30 pm) so selected a site and self checked in. Sites are narrow but can accommodate big rigs with slides if you park so that hookups are between your slides. Park host on site was helpful in getting settled. Daily fee of $4 per person in addition to the very reasonable camping fee so total was $23. Neat dunes. No wind on our overnight stay but would question camping here if it was windy due to blowing sand. Hookups of electricity and water on same pedestal and worked well. Sites are reasonably level. Dump station fee is $2 but don't know if that applies if you pay for camping. Very quiet at night. Park was about 80% full over night. Good stop for overnight. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

This is probably a great place for kids to slide down the sand hills as a novelty, but as a campground it's little more than a road with motor homes and travel trailers parked alongside it. Very little spacing between sites, no privacy. The posted rate is $15.00 per night but there is an additional $4.00 charge for each person in your motor home or travel trailer as a day use charge. You can hear traffic from the interstate and railroad. You cannot reserve a specific site on the state park website but you are assigned a spot when you arrive. One of the pull through sites had standing water but no one corrected it as it was assigned the 2 days that we camped there. We would not return to this campground. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice park, easy access right off I-10. The pull thru sites parallel the road, some are level, some not so much. Water/elec worked fine, no WiFi. Bathhouse and showers are nice and worked fine. Dump station worked fine. When you make a reservation, you are not guaranteed a particular site, just that you will have a site. It is first come first serve for the "best" sites. The camping fee is $15, plus $4.00 day use fee for number of people. Our $23 fee was camping 1 night for 2 adults. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed one night in site #25 (back in, electric and water only). The park is easily located right off of I-20. The sand hills are fascinating and the kids loved sliding down them on the disks we rented from the park office. We had full LTE service from AT&T. We did not try the OTA or satellite for TV although I suspect they'd both be just fine. We enjoyed our stay and would return when traveling through this part of west Texas. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We only spent one night here passing through (and still had to pay $4 per person entrance fee in addition to the camping fee) but it looks like a fun campground. Nestled among sand dunes, you can rent discs to sled the hills. The water and electric hookups worked fine. There is a dump site. The bathhouse was clean and had plenty of hot water for showers. Beware of high winds. We caught a storm passing through and we were buffeted with wind gusts of up to 70 mph. That sand can sting! There is no wifi available and winds prevented us from raising the antenna. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I loved camping here! We had a site right next to the sand dunes where our kids could go sledding. The sunsets and sunrises were both so beautiful. They rent or sell sleds at the Visitor Center where you check-in. We were staying for 5 days so it made more sense to buy than rent. There are not very many big rig sites, but the site we were in was good. We were in site 9 and we have a 41 foot 5th wheel. Verizon coverage was good. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The park features large sand dunes with great views, beautiful white sand dunes and a pretty sunset made our stay a pleasure. You can rent plastic discs to slide down the dunes for about $1.00 per hour at the park head quarters. Many of the sites are listed as pull throughs, though they are parallel to the road and not all are big rig friendly Camping area has 26 water and 50/30/20 electric sites, most look pretty level (some are on a slope). with a central dump station. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Easy access from I-20 - just off Exit 86. Narrow, paved interior roads, mostly level, paved sites. Only 26 Sites; some back-ins; pull-throughs are along side of road. The park doesn't reserve you a particular site, so plan to arrive early in the day to get a suitable one, not all are big-rig friendly. We enjoyed camping in the sand dunes, and would stay here again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a GREAT place to stop with the kids or grandkids and let them enjoy the sledding on the sand. We went right after a rain, turns out that is perfect conditions! The office staff is GREAT *IF* you get K.C. - the female staff person is very cold and unfriendly. The supt and K.C. are really terrific. The place was clean. The space between campsites is good. Hookups were good. Highly recommend as an overnight stop or a destination. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Very fun place to camp! The sites are set within the dunes so it's easy to head out straight from the camper to sledding after the sun has gone down. The sled rental closes in the late afternoon, so make sure to bring your own. The sites were mostly sand-free and level with good room between neighbors and ample space for larger RVs (we have a 38' 5th wheel and had plenty of room to park and not unhook). The only reason I knocked it down a few stars was because the entire campground lost power at 3 AM. I was still pretty warm since it was July, and there was NO number to call anywhere to report the outage! We finally saw a park ranger around 9 AM the following morning, and he said he had no idea the power was out. By that time, a good number of campers had left before dawn because of the situation. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Sandhills is a one-of-a-kind campground. We planned an overnight here because it was a mid-way point between stops for us. There is not a bit of shade anywhere, but the dunes and sand make it starkly beautiful. The park ranger was very helpful and suggested site number 12 for us, but also said if we found something else we liked better, to just call the office and let them know we switched sites. Easy to maneuver within the campground, but would probably be difficult if there was a lot of wind drifting the sand.
We'd stay here again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed three days to do a photo shoot. The dunes are beautiful and kids have fun sliding down the larger ones, some as tall as 50-70 feet. Colorful sunsets and sunrises. Check-in clerk was a little snippy but got the job done. She assigned a site where our coach step buried itself a few inches in the sand when we opened the door, although we were as close to the utilities as we could get. They have "eyebrow" type pull throughs, most of which appear to be a little short for larger rigs. We saw a big rig in one, but it was actually taking up 2 sites. We switched to a back-in which was paved, level, and of adequate width. Utilities worked well. We had no problem with Verizon signal strength for phones but did not have adequate strength for the Mi-fi. We had a concern about the metal archway over the entrance, since there were no signs giving its height and the office didn't know the minimum clearance, although they advised they had had 18 wheelers and large tour type buses go through with no problem. Be advised you will have sand everywhere in the RV, but hey, its the sand hills, so expect to clean after you leave. Although easy on and off and close to I-20, it is quiet. Our site had a metal table covered by a metal awning. We enjoyed the stay. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.
