Nice campground! Lake Conroe is your backyard. We stayed in site #30 which had a small view of water through the trees and a trail leading down to the walking trail and lake. Poor satellite receptions due to the trees. Sites were spacious but parking for extra tow vehicle can be a problem. People with boats were using the extra spots in front of campsites. Watch out for low tree limbs! Full hookups are nice in a campground. Sites are fairly level. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Very nice and quiet campground. We stayed 2 days in each loop for a total of 4 days. Both loops are equally nice but several of ones in the Sycamore loop have water view or waterfront access within 50' or so. The boat ramp is also at the Sycamore loop. Hosts were very nice and were observed immediately tidying up recently vacated sites. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Rate includes $10.00 reservation fee for each site. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Cagle Recreation Area is on Lake Conroe near New Waverly, Texas. Beautiful pine forest with abundant wildlife. The park has 47 full hookup RV sites that are shaded and generously spaced. Some RV pads are not level front to back &/or side to side. They have 3 miles of easy hiking trails in the park. We were in site 35 which has a great view of the lake. We've been here before and will definitely return. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice and shady park. Our site was fairly level but others were pretty sloped. All utilities worked well. Verizon signal was pretty weak as was AT&T. We were able to get satellite signal. Very quiet in the upper loop where we were. Made use of the hiking trails. Firewood was available from the camphost. 10 pieces were free. Lots of geocaching nearby. Several miles from any services. We would stay here again. Nightly rate is 30.00 but is not 50% off with the America the Beautiful Pass. They say a standard site is $16.00 and so you get $8 off and then have to pay $11 for utilities. Still a great bargain for a FHU site. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a very nice National Forest campground. It is located on the northern part of Lake Conroe with close access to the lake. There are 2 camping loops and a total of 47 camp sites. All of the campsites are spacious and shady under tall pine trees and lively oak trees. Most of the RV pads are completely level; however there are some that will require minimal leveling blocks. The pedestals are conveniently located with full hook-up dump, 30 and 50 amps and water. Each site has a metal picnic table, a fire ring, a large tent pad and a lantern pole. There are standard national park bath/toilet houses in both loops that were clean and well maintained. TV reception with Houston stations was generally good. There is a nice hiking trail around the immediate area that will take 45-60 minutes to hike. There is also a boat launch and a very nice boat pier. There was a constant presence by the camp host, and they were friendly and available without being intrusive. This park is one of our favorite campgrounds. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is fine for a stop over but there's not much to make it a destination. Sure Sam Houston forest is huge. There's lots of hiking but it's pretty boring hiking where you're just walking through the woods and there's nothing special to see. Other than ticks. If you like ticks, this is your spot. I picked no less than 50 ticks off my doggies after a 2 mile walk through the woods. I realize it's nature and all but that's a bit excessive. Also the camp host was rude. I don't normally have an opinion on hosts. I stay out of their way, they stay out of mine. Sometimes they stick out as being especially nice. There are a lot of really nice hosts out there. This is my 1st experience with an actual jerk host. So I hope they clean that up. Overall, decent place but nothing special. Site accessibility (Easy to navigate and good roads in and out. Sites were mostly level but not entirely) - 4 Campground location (about 1 hr drive to Houston) - 3 Nearby amenities (Everything you could need was about 25 minute drive) - 3 Site Privacy (Sites were very short. Had to use overflow parking for the car. Although it was plentiful, it may not be as easy if the park is packed. Not much privacy but good space) - 2 Campground amenities (No laundry. Dumpsters were easily accessible.) - 3 Dog friendly (Ticks ticks ticks....although walking on the roads was pleasant) - 2 Activities (In the summer, the water would be good for kayaking. Hiking trails. Not much else) - 3 Cost ($28/night for 50 amp Full hookup) - 4 Staff friendliness (Jerk host) - 1 Connectivity (Decent signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon. Lots of OTA channels but didn't come in great. May have been from most days being very cloudy) - 3 Total rating = 2.8. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Rate reflects senior card discount. This is an oddly priced park for a COE, may be the sign of the future. You pay $16 for your site, which you get your 50% off for the golden age card. However, you then pay $11 for your utilities, per night. So the bottom line cost with the discount is $19. Without any discount its $27 a night, still not bad for full hook ups. There are 2 camping loops, first one is smaller, about 19 sites, second one is larger, both have bathhouse/showers. Beautiful park located on the shores of Lake Conroe. Park stays very quiet even over the weekend. There is a boat ramp, however no swim beach, playground or day use area so that keeps traffic down. Electric is steady, water pressure good at 65PSI, all sites have sewer and there is no dump station. Gate attendants and hosts were friendly and knowledgeable. Park was kept very clean. We saw no paid staff present while we were there. Our Verizon phones did not receive any signal and we had to drive 6 miles to I45 to get a signal for text and talk. However, our booster cradle did provide a wifi signal enough to check internet, email, etc. Park was clean and free of trash. Dumpters in each camping loop. There is a nice walking trail that goes though the park and long the lake. Good bird watching and deer will wander along the perimeter of the camping loop, also plenty of friendly squirrels. We would visit here again. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Not much in area, 20 miles south to Conroe, 20 miles north to Huntsville. New Waverly offers a small grocery store, gas stations, some food venues. Sam Houston statue just a few miles up the road. This is great place to rest and relax.

What a great park! Just beautiful. Nice paved spaces with nice hookups, properly spaced for easy hookup. Nice hiking trails, pretty lake, except people have been cleaning their fish by the boat ramp area and it smelled really bad! That was the only negative.

Very nice host too. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Spent two nights checking out new (to me) used diesel pusher before out of town trip. Host confirmed that the upper loop (first one on left) in park is the quieter of the two camping loops. Site 003 low on passenger side, so manual leveling done. Power, water and sewer were easy to connect, near back on driver side. Sewer connection had actual threads to hold adapter in, so no ballast rock needed. Dark enough to see stunning stars at night, and, VERY quiet. Cell signal spotty, but serviceable. Still figuring out TV connections in new rig, so didn't get TV signal, but host pulling in 20 channels over the air digital signal. Easy in/out to back in space with 38 foot rig. Roomy paved road with marked areas wide enough to park a boat on a trailer, or drop the towed car. Easy access (6 miles) to I45 and New Waverly for 2 grocery stores, hardware store, gas, etc.. Perfect for short escape from metro madness in Houston! We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Very nice public campground on Lake Conroe. The sites are large enough for big rigs with full hook ups. The campground is located among the pine trees in the Sam Houston National Forest. We were there for only 3 nights during the week. Very quiet. We were able to walk on the paved trails in the park, but the rest of the trails were muddy from recent rains. I was hesitant to stay here due to reading reviews that cell coverage was spotty, but I am so glad we went anyway. We had 4G Verizon and AT&T with probably only 1 bar, but we used our Wilson booster and were able to get a good signal from both. Since we work during the week this was important.

Anyway, the park itself is wonderful! Especially site 30 which I think was one of the best spots in the park. The site was very spacious and private with a large yard. There is a beautiful view of Lake Conroe that you can see through the trees or walk down the path to get an unobstructed view. The sunsets were stunning!

The camp hosts are very friendly. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Cagle Recreation Area is located about six miles west of the New Waverly, Texas turnoff from Interstate I-45. The turnoff onto the state road is a pleasant, straight drive on an excellent road through part of Sam Houston National Forest, and portends the native greenery to come. Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Conroe, Cagle is deservedly highly reviewed for its escape with all the basic hookup amenities. Not sure when this was created, unlike another Sam Houston recreation area named "Double Lake" nearby that was built during the CCC days, Lake Conroe itself has only come into being as a Houston drinking water reservoir and recreation area in 1973. The lake is 21 miles long and 21,000 acres in area. Campsites are situated away from the roads generally though one can hear some state highway traffic during the day, especially on the bridge across the northern part of the lake nearby. Verizon signal extremely weak as was AT&T cell phone service, so only minimal contact with outside world feasible here. While the inner loop sites for Sweet Gum have no shrubbery to speak of, and we value privacy, we nonetheless chose to move upon our arrival from an outer to inner site due to almost nobody else in the campground besides friendly hosts during our early December stay, wider spacing and most of all much more level sites. The larger Sycamore campground has a few choice lake front sites that were occupied and more campsites generally, whereas the Sweet Gum loop is more modest, quieter and seemingly tucked away in the forest more.

Explore the paved trail with 3 bridges across streams for marvelous shady views of lake & native vegetation. The longer unpaved trail is ~1.5 miles, OK for 1-2 hr walk. From USFS: "The smaller loop, Sweet Gum, is more open... Although widely spaced, there is no middle story, providing poor privacy... Sycamore Loop... campsites are closer providing minimal privacy." Actually, outer part of loops are widely spaced & offset both geometrically & by elevation, pretty private.

Some absolutely beautiful days spent there at this time of year, mostly vacant though there was a surge during the weekend as nice weather prevailed and apparently enticed Houstonians to come (a bit unnerving, just a week later a tornado touched down at New Waverly and caused some damage, so be aware of weather changes!). Overall, one of our more enjoyable intermediate stops as we made our way across the country. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

After just purchasing a used motorhome, I figured Cagle Recreation Area would be a good "maiden voyage" to check out the new rig. Stayed here for 2 nights and found this to be a good location to try things out. Getting in and out of the park and sites was easy; the park is very clean. Space 028 while large enough for my 40' motorhome, it tapers off downhill at the back of the space. Had to use a couple of boards I brought with me to get the rig leveled. The campground host does a great job of keeping the leaves cleaned up and checking on everyone. We had a very enjoyable stay and enjoyed getting back out to the outdoors. AT&T and Verizon service was spotty. I look forward to staying here again, just not space 028. We camped at Cagle Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Very quite, clean and friendly Park Host. The thing I really like about this park is that it is only 45 minutes from my house on the north side of Lake Conroe. We had site #35 which is only a few feet from the water. There are a lot of birds in this park so if you are a birdwatcher you will be delighted. The hike/bike trails are a great way to get up and out. We have already booked this park for our 2016 "local" outing and will be back as often as possible.
