We loved this place and wished we could stay longer. We stayed in Red Arroyo, which sits a little higher so it was windy! And the landscape is a bit harsh - but that's west Texas. You can see both horizons, watch both the sunrise and the sunset. And the sunrise when we were there was at 7:44 AM since you are very far west in the central time zone. So you don't even have to get up early. The sites are beyond spacious and ours was level, utilities were fine. We appreciated the shaded picnic table. We went searching for the longhorn herd but did not see them. Saw the buffalo herd, though and a lot of deer. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The ranger told us we might find the longhorn herd along the road from the entrance gate to the dam, which is to the right as you enter the park. We did not see them but we did see the buffalo.

Plenty of space between sites. Fairly level pull through sites. I just needed a spot to spend the night while going across Texas, it was a good park for that purpose. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed for 2 nights on Site 4 of the Red Arroyo area with FHU. We did not have a view but the setting was still very nice. Had we known that a little further along we could have had a lake view, we would have asked for that. We didn't use restrooms. The level pull-thru was plenty long enough for our 35ft motorhome with tow and well away from the other sites. Nice covered picnic tables. Rangers were extremely helpful when we rang to book and advised us to enter via the South Entrance. A very quiet park but not much shade. It was very windy but also very warm. Would stay here again. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here for a quick overnight while driving through Texas. We had a site in the Red Arroyo CG and had a lake view. It was quite a trek to the restrooms, but they were clean, as was the campsite. As is typical of Texas in the summer, lots of ants but we didn't have trouble keeping them out of our trailer. The pads all looked pretty level, and they have covered picnic tables. Excellent Verizon coverage. There is a very nice HEB just a few miles from the park if you need to stock up. Like all Texas state parks, there is a per person entrance fee that is waived if you have a parks pass. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Travel Trailer.

First visit to this beautiful sp. The campsite was great not on top of other sites plenty of space. Restrooms in the bald eagle area were clean for the most part. Better than what I imagined. The south entrance has a firewood vending machine just in case you forgot to grab some before coming in. The bald eagle area is really close to 288 and the south entrance is closer to town and the lake. Our site had no shaded picnic table but others did. We actually set up in the wrong area due to failing to read the sign off the highway (our fault) just know that there aren't signs inside the camping area to let you know where you are at. There was some sort of race going on at the park over the weekend so it was booked but never heard anything and neighbors were very quiet. We had 41 mph winds hit early in the morning some people packed up as their tent didn't hold up but we stayed. Would visit again in the future it was great. Staff was friendly at both ends of the park and very helpful. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Tent.

Overall Rating:

We have stayed here several times mainly because it is convenient, about halfway between our home and Austin so we can meet our son for a visit. The nightly rate shown is for a limited use cabin which have beds [bring your own bedding], heat and air, no restroom, and doesn't count the daily entrance fee of $ 4 per person per day. The cabin have an adjoining RV parking space with electric (only 30 amp) and water, no sewer. There is nothing scenic about the park but there a few places of interest in San Angelo, such as old Fort Concho. All usual stores, Wal-Mart, HEB (groceries). Lowes, etc. are nearby. Check-in was a little rude this time with too much "rules are rules" emphasis. We'll probably try another place if staying in San Angelo again. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.

Not a lot to comment on. Pretty typical park, sites were well spaced. Everything worked fine, quiet, secure closed gate after hours. Close to shopping in San Angelo. Would stay here again, convenient. We have TX parks pass or otherwise there is a $4/per person daily fee. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Short drive into town. Had a Mexican meal at "Henry's" which seemed to be somewhat of a local legend. Very reasonably priced, extremely quick service even though the parking lot was packed (We parked across street at bank, it was after hours), food was good.

Price is $20 for E/W plus $4 per night without TX state park pass. Very roomy sites, two-way paved roads through campground loops, plenty of room to maneuver and very spacious sites so probably fairly big-rig friendly. Picnic tables on patios under shelters. Grills. Fire Pits. Mostly level. Mostly sunny with some spotty shade. Most sites have view of lake. Verizon signal good. Several over-the-air TV channels available. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.

We thought this was a beautiful park. It was confusing when driving there, as we weren't sure where to go with there being a north and south entrance. Luckily it was still day time and we called the park to get advice. we went to the south entrance. Staff was friendly and helpful. The spots were huge, well manicured (the volunteer camp host did a great job). It was nice to have the picnic table and fire ring next to the RV so that you could watch tv outside and still be sitting near the fire. There are little pathways through the loops, which are great for walking the dog. They have bird feeders set up at different spots for bird viewing. We took a little drive to see the small herd of bison and longhorn steers. We came across a few javelinas too. Verizon signal good, there is wifi but not strong. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.

There are two major camping areas, the North and South Shore. We stayed at the North Shore while we found most campers stayed on the South Shore near the lake. We were with 7 other campers in our group and almost had the north shore to ourselves. Signage needs a lot of work, directing people to the camping areas, to the dump station (which is usable but needs work done on it), to the bathrooms, to everything. We saw deer, birds, a snake, and javelinas. Park host was friendly and so was the ranger. Gate guard was indifferent. We ended up with a flat tire and ranger escorted the repair truck to our site so he could find us. Sites were well shaded and spacious. Each site has a covered picnic table and fire pit and grill. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.

International Water Lilly at city park and Tulle Princess boat ride. Both are a must! Ate lunch at Henry's Mexican Restaurant. Best chicken fried steak I ever had. It was recommended by a waitress that had worked there over 25 years!

Very nice state park. We were going to spend 2 nights, but extended for a third night. The price reflects the 50% discount for the 2nd night when using the Texas State Park annual pass.

The sites are large and spaced far apart. They have both pull-throughs and back-ins with covered picnic tables at each site.

The sites are water & electric only, no sewer.

It's just a few miles into San Angelo for shopping.

We'd definitely stay here again if in the area. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed the weekend before July 4 weekend. Not many people. Stayed in Bald Eagle Campgrounds. Only three other campers in area. Site was somewhat level. Had a grill, fire ring, and covered table. Roof over table was too close to parking, so had to park at odd angle to open slides. Lots of trees. Rest rooms were clean, but could use more effort. Next time will stay in Red Arroyo or Lake View only because they are closer to lake. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This lovely state park just outside of San Angelo was a great 3-day stop. The daily fee for camping is $20 but each of us paid $4 park entrance fee daily, thus $28 per day. The park entrance fee can be avoided by purchasing a $70 yearly Texas state park pass. We chose site #14 with a view of the (distant) lake. The wild flowers were blooming, the sun was shining, and each site is so spacious we felt we were in the park alone. Each site has a concrete pad plus a concrete covered patio with a picnic table. Lots of biking and hiking available. This park is home to the official Texas State longhorn herd as well as a herd of bison. We had a great stay! We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Motorhome.
