First time to this park. Our site had lots of privacy. There were very few lake view sites. We really didn't get to see much of the park. It was a nice weekend trip from the Dallas area. However the chiggars were very bad. Didn't notice it on Day 1 but by the end of the trip we were covered. Spray, a lot! That would be our only drawback from returning to this park. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The closest store was about 15 miles away - it was a Dollar General. Lots of food selections but no fresh foods/produce. Friendliest people work there! Sulphur Springs was a little farther with more selection, but we didn't go into town.

We stayed at Cooper Lake SP in April, 2018. We arrived on a Friday, and the park was very busy until Sunday afternoon, when everyone left. There are some nice hiking trails. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

This large park is scenic and quiet and there is a lot of space and privacy between most camp sites. Parking pads are in great shape although a bit narrow, and most are very shady. Water pressure was 72 PSI, and there was some slope to our site, so bring a water pressure regulator and some boards for leveling. A few sites have a view of the lake through the trees. We stayed in #12 and really liked the privacy and view. We had no problems with insects in November. Utilities are good and Verizon cell phone coverage is available as well as wifi at the office. There is a small store at the office with a few souvenirs. Amenities include hiking trails, fishing piers, boat ramps, and kayak and SUP rentals. There are several large day use areas for swimming and picnicking. Firewood and ice are available at the office, but the nearest groceries are about 20 minutes away in Sulphur Springs. We enjoyed camping, hiking, and boating on this large lake. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Travel Trailer.

Firewood and ice are available at the office, but the nearest groceries are about 20 minutes away in Sulphur Springs. Sulphur Springs also has a nice square around the beautiful downtown courthouse with lots of shops and eateries as well as America's only public bathrooms with see-through walls!

We stayed in Deer Haven #63. I have to say we have only been camping for just over a year, but this campground is my least favorite. Every site that we looked at has poison ivy all around, and the chiggers are awful. If you don't have children or pets, you may enjoy it. I simply took the dogs for a walk along the road and came home covered in chigger bites. We all came home with chigger bites, very unpleasant. What we did like, very nice children's playground and swim area, and it was quiet. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Cooper Lake State Park ($21) site #25 (Pull thru) (Brightstar Area) 50 amp, water no sewer but a dump station near by. The park is located on a very large beautiful lake. We could not see the lake from our campsite but the other campers were located far enough away to make us feel very serene and quiet. We hiked 1 short trail and another longer one by the swimming area. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Fifth Wheel.

Park has many sites. Some with views of the lake. We were in site 12, highly recommend. Concrete pads nice and level, but too narrow, stairs open over drop off. Most all sites are like this. Spacious sites with good privacy. Would stay here again. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

The drought has severely impacted the water level in the lake, and the boat launches are unusable. However, the campgrounds were well-maintained and the facilities were clean and in good repair. Sites were paved and level enough for us, and midweek in the fall there were few other campers, making this a very nice experience. We saw lots of wildlife, and enjoyed walking through the park. Staff was great and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beware--there are only 2 sites with sewer, but there is a dump station. The area is beautiful, the sites are huge, and some have shelters over the picnic tables. All the sites are concrete. The pluses are huge. But, the general park could sure use some cleaning up-- downed trees, dead trees, dead brush. It could be so much prettier. Keep in mind that the lake is 10-15 feet low. The boat ramps, fishing piers, and canoes are unusable. We were there for 3 weeks for business. Sulphur Springs is really cute and 25 minutes away. The Crump Family Vineyard is excellent and serves meals. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Motorhome.

Some great sites here, especially in the bright star loop. Some sites have great views of the lake. Bathrooms were clean and the showers well maintained. Fire wood was available via donation box on the west side of the loop. The beach on the day access has a nice playground for the kids. We loved the wooded sites; there are also spots that are side-by-side if you need multiple sites for larger groups. Not much around this area, there's a convenience store about 6 miles away for some items. Ice is available in the park HQ. Recommended - nice park. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Tent Trailer.

Beautiful park with tons of deer. Sites are large with concrete pads. Easy to maneuver. We stayed here all the time. Nothing bad about this park except the new ranger that is a little bothersome. He will knock on your door at the crack of dawn if something bothers him about your campsite. Bathhouses are always clean and warm in winter. Rate is Park Pass rate. Overall Rating:

This is an outstanding park and we thoroughly enjoyed our one-week stay. The area is remote and beautiful and there is no highway noise. Camping sites are spacious and offer good privacy. Our site was a pull-thru with a view of the lake. Except on the weekend, there were few other guests so we had the place almost entirely to ourselves. We enjoyed hiking the lovely trail through the woods and riding our bicycles throughout this large park. We noted that the day use areas, playgrounds, boat ramps and fishing piers were very nice. The restrooms were immaculate. There were many really nice cabins and screened shelters available for those without RVs or tents. Our Verizon cell phone and Sprint Internet card worked nut our AT&T cell phone did not. I would have rated this a 10 if the sites had sewer. We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Fifth Wheel.

I liked this park because it was only an hour from Rockwall. Nice wide sites, spread out. This is a large park and very spread out so you can't really ride your bike all around unless your in great shape. No bike trails except at the opposite end from where we stayed. They had a beautiful playground, picnic area and swim beach but again you would have to drive there. We will go here again. Overall Rating:

This is a really nice park. Friendly staff, clean restrooms and nice shaded campsites. Some sites have shelter structures; all have a fire ring and lantern post. Excellent boat ramps and lighted fishing piers. We also enjoyed the hiking and bike trails. The only reasons this park did not score higher was the high grass in some campsites and the user unfriendly dump station (a curb encircled the inlet making it difficult to dump). We camped at Cooper Lake State Park / South Sulphur Unit in a Travel Trailer.
