We stayed here two nights on our way home from five days at Palo Duro Canyon ST.Park. Since we made last minute reservations we where put in to the "Overflow" area, which we had no problem with since we made these reservations on such short notice. With that being said I would not like to do overflow again as it was very close quarters and no privacy, but they told us that ahead of time, so no surprise, just would not prefer to do that again. We did go around checking out the regular campsites and for the most part all looked pretty good, tent and R.V. sites. Lots of shade trees and fairly level sites. If we come back this way again we would definitely like to get one of those sites. We had water and electricity 30/50 amp in our overflow site. Campground was very family friendly and has a very nice swimming pool ! Cost two dollars per person to use pool (open 11 am to 3 pm then reopens at 4pm to 7pm. Being a hot summer day it was crowded (the pool) very nice ,clean pool though. Park employees very friendly and helpful. The fee for camping was only eight dollars for the two nights , but that reflects a 50% discount coupon I had for buying state park pass. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

One of the big draws for me was 1) Lake Abilene is just a mile down the road and entry is included in your camping fee. Fishing from shore and boats. You can rent kayaks at campground. 2) Perini Ranch steakhouse is just three miles down the road !! Had an awesome cowboy cut ribeye, my wife had catfish and my son had ribs. All top notch. We ate indoors in the a/c but there is also partial shade seating outside too and live music (outside) Ya gotta go there if you like steak. One of the best steakhouses in Texas !

Buffalo gap historic village, Vletas candies in Abilene.

I highly recommend buying Texas state park pass, it has saved us a lot of money not only at Abilene state park but also at Palo Duro, and Garner state park so far.. discount on camping, purchases in camp store and daily entry fee (which you still have to pay on top of camping fee ) is waived with pass.

We pulled into Abilene Texas State Park yesterday and are just enjoying the day here. The park is well shaded and there is a lovely swimming pool for the warm afternoons. It appears that they are cleaning up after some weather incident, but even so, the park is very well maintained. Pads are fairly level asphalt. Each site has a picnic table located on a concrete patio - no covering needed with the great shade. This park gives easy access to Abilene where you will find everything you might need; Wal-Mart, grocery stores, Abilene Mall, health services, etc. Just on the edge of west Texas, the sunsets here are pretty spectacular. Our site had water/50amp/dump station. Almost all of the state parks in Texas are good places to stop along the way to wherever. http://tpwd.texas.gov/ We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate reflects Texas SP Pass discount. Nice park 20 miles south of Abilene Tx. There are several camping loops, most larger campers are put into Brushy Creek. These are mostly level, well spaced. Power is steady, water at 55PSI, no sewer at the site but there is a dump station at the end of the 12 space camping loop. Lots of trees and areas between the camps is left natural so discourages visitors from just "passing thru" other campsites. There is a bird blind nearby, lots of birds and deer. Trails are very nice and well maintained. The pool wasn't open when we were there but imagine it's a busy place in the summer. To visit the lake you have to leave the park, go a mile or so up the highway and into another section. Lake was quiet while we were there, area is rather neglected and roads are all dirt/gravel, dusty and very narrow. Staff throughout the park were very nice and courteous. There appeared to be no speed limit in the park for guests or staff. Traffic can be very fast. There was a camp host but we never saw them doing anything in the camp loop. Fire rings had not been cleared in a long time. Pads were asphalt and in good condition. We would stay here again if in the area, but bring diversions...there isn't anything to do in town once you've visited Buffalo Gap Museum. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the Buffalo Gap Historical Village. Also when coming in from the south, the CR 275 is fine for large rigs, saves several miles.

On a weekday, when school in still in session, this is an excellent place for an over night stop or as a destination location for a few nights. I've never been here on a weekend. The park could be difficult to locate the first time. Find Buffalo Gap and then follow the signs, carefully. The Pecan loop has excellent, and spacious sites, for RV trailers or motorhomes. Most are level, and will easily accommodate a twenty four foot motorhome. The utilities are excellent and well placed. There is no sewer connection for the Pecan loop sites. The big negative here is the restroom. It is centrally located within the loop, but way to small for the potential number of people. The restroom is in need of a major renovation. There are plenty of trails here for biking or hiking. The place is dark at night, as it should be. There are an assortment of natural night sounds here including a chorus of Poorwills, and frogs. These pleasant sounds can be vastly disturbed by the occasional flyover by a B-1 Bomber. We camped here in a Motorhome, and we will return again next May. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

We were in site 88. It was paved and we easily got level without using blocks. The sites in this CCC park were roomy and quiet. The bathroom/shower building is a short walk away down the camp road but you can take a shortcut through the yurt area when it isn't occupied. There are two showers available each for men and women with a private dressing area. The grounds and facilities are well kept overall. We especially enjoyed the hiking trails. We had Verizon cell service throughout most of the park. You can fish in the lake if you get a code from the front office. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

Another run down Texas state park. Didn't use the provided restrooms, too far away and we have our own. Stayed in the $18 big rig area as they are the nicer sites although our 5th wheel would fit in a few of the 25' sites. Well spaced sites. The campground was okay, just run down, hence a 7. All the sites needed some care, you tracked in a mess when going into the camper. Roads are a bit narrow, backing in with bigger rigs looked to be a bit on the difficult side but everyone we saw made it. I would stay here again when passing through. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

There's a lake for fishing and a pool. It's a very large park where you can hardly see your neighbor. We would definitely return. We stayed in the Oakgrove loop section. Bushy loop also looked great.

This State Park is a gem for RVers. The campsites are nestled in the heart of the park surrounding you with trees and nature. We saw deer and an armadillo here. The showers were such a surprise- they are modern and have excellent facilities. We were there for 4 nights and would love to go back again. The Rangers in this park are super helpful and knowledgeable. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

Well wooded state park with hiking trails and lots of areas for kids. The sites themselves were spacious, but the gravel pad was a little beat up. Our site had sewer on it although our tag said water and electric only. Good ATT and Verizon coverage. All Texas state parks charge $5 per person per day so the site was actually $28 a night and the park seemed a little run-down for that price. It's also hard to get to from the north, so do not recommend for a one night stay only. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice park set down in the trees. The night we arrived it was really windy but the park is protected so it was lovely. Our site was fairly private because of the trees. Some road noise but it quieted down at night. Not the easiest place to find if you are coming from the south. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The actual park wasn't bad, but there was some sort of reunion going on (which included many of the campers) which brought with it quite a few unsavory characters, including our neighbor with an aggressive dog and trash littered everywhere. We never saw our camp hosts, so we spent time hiking or at the pool instead of our campsite. The site itself was level and shady and had a picnic table and a fire pit (which was littered with trash from the previous camper). It took a little navigation to back in among the overhanging tree branches but it was manageable. We didn't see many mosquitoes, but the spiders sure loved this park - everything we owned was covered in cobwebs by the morning! The hiking trails were well maintained and a nice addition, as well as several shady picnic spots scattered throughout the park. The pool was a disappointment - I don't know if it was because it was a Saturday, or because it was free, but the entire county must have been in that pool. We had a substantial wait because they could only allow a certain number of people in at a time, and once we got in, it was elbow-to-elbow in the pool, kids and adults. My kids asked to leave after a while because they didn't have room to swim, they pretty much had to just stand in one place in the water. Be careful on the trip into the park if you have a large RV - the streets are heavily tree-lined and we had to ride the center line several times to avoid losing our AC. We won't be returning to Abilene State Park. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We pulled in to the park in the early evening and found the park hosts. They directed us to one of the last sites open. They were very friendly. The site was asphalt and level. We paid the next morning and did get the Texas State Pass. It was a nice park. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped here for one night while traveling north through Texas. We chose to stay in the wagon circle area (group camping)because of the better rates. The road circles and you back yourself in at an electric/water hookup. A large, shaded green space is in the center. Several picnic tables and fire rings are also in the green area. There is a bathroom and group shelter in the middle. The bathroom in this section doesn't include a shower but a short trail walk will take you to a bathhouse with shower in another camping area. The park was clean and the office staff were friendly. Other than a few well maintained hiking trails, there was not much to do with the lakes dried and the pool closed. We did visit Buffalo Gap Historic Village. It was a lot of fun and they are dog friendly! We camped at Abilene State Park in a Motorhome.
