Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for three days in early April 2018. Super easy access from I-10. First, we almost didn't stay here because when we pulled in there was some big blue jalopy of a Bus parked right in front, this made the park appear run down (which it is) and during my stay I noticed 2 different high-end rigs pull-in, see that jalopy and promptly leave. However, the manager of this place is super-nice and is working hard to make it better. The site itself was gravel and a little short for my 43 footer and had a very small concrete pad for a patio. The hook-ups are not well situated and when I wanted to empty my tanks I had to figure out how to do that on an uphill incline. The park itself has buildings showing their age, a rather large dog park, good wifi and is all dirt roads. It seems a lot of manual laborers live here and after pulling in we decided to stay only one night instead of our original 3 nights, then a state trooper pulled in. turns out he's staying there which made us feel better. We did stay the entire time. Road noise was not bothersome and the town of van horn is a dying one. Very little in that town but there are a couple of restaurants close by and also a couple of big truck stops. All in all, this is worth a one or two night stop if you happen to need a place in West Texas off I-10. Just don't expect much. Ample at best. There was garbage littered around the park which may have to do with the wind because I saw the staff actively working to make the place nicer. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a fine park for an overnight stay, a couple if you're needing to rest up. Electric is steady, water pressure good, we used regulator. Wifi worked for checking email and news. Gravel lot, there are small concrete pads for sitting out. A lot of trash and cigarette butts everywhere. Numerous workers, but not too much traffic. You can see I-10 from the park. The owner and her assistant are very nice, helpful and are obviously trying to make some improvements to the park. Not much to see or do in Van Horn. Mostly truck stops and fast food. We would stay here again when traveling though. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Great place for overnight stop between Phoenix and San Antonio. Nothing fancy but clean and very friendly. Short walk to steak house for dinner. Large pull thrus available. We had 40 ft diesel pusher towing a truck and didn't need to unhook and height wasn't an issue. Ask for space without tree if you are tall. Small patio pad but we were not using it anyhow. Right next to freeway but noise wasn't too bad. We were farthest end from office and WiFi worked. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Very small park in a very small town, stopped here overnight because it was convenient and because it had the best reviews of the Van Horn RV parks. Had all the facilities, 50A, water & sewer - site was sand with a small (new) concrete patio without a table! Park is okay for an overnight stay, rest of the park is filled with workers. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Sold park for overnight stay while traveling. Owners/managers very friendly. Since traveling with another RV couple, they were able to put us in adjacent sites. Outside you could hear freeway traffic and the trains that went by. Inside we really did not hear either. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Rating: Wow, $15 with Passport America. 40' long w a toad, pull-thru good water and sewer. Picnic table with concrete patio. Fenced large dog park. A little road and train noise but nothing unexpected for the convenience of being so close to the interstate. The office staff were very accommodating and the dog park, they worked apparently pretty hard to make sure there were no stickers. It was the first place from Arizona to Texas we've been in this trip that didn't have stickers everywhere, the dogs very much appreciated that! It was a fine visit for a late arrival quick in-and-out, which is all we did, I would be back again in a heartbeat. Apparently the restaurant next door makes pretty good food according to the neighbors that were there for a short stay and had a couple of meals there. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Reservations might be suggested, the price is great and they usually fill up, we got the very last space when we happened to call late for a reservation when passing through. It was a good choice, we will be back

Hard to beat for $15 with Passport America. 55' long pull-thru with new electrical pedestal, new 16 channel cable, good water and sewer and some of the best wifi found. Picnic table with concrete patio. Fenced dog park. The water is at the far end of the pad so two hoses may be required. Concrete patio is set up for mid-door rvs. Some road and train noise but nothing that kept us from a good night's sleep. The dog park had something that would be really nice at all dog parks, a big flood light that made after use after sundown great without a flashlight. The only BIG letdown were burrs in the dog park. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Park is under new management, 6 wks I think, and they appear to be genuine in their effort to improve the park. I hope so because the first good park here will do well. Wifi was terrible. Stopped often, not slow but stopped, often just disappeared or would drop you. No reason for that these days. All services were pretty clean, showers were really small. There are thorns throughout the park so be careful of and check your pets feet. Roads and all sites are gravel, pretty dusty if someone goes fast. Sites are pretty level. Pretty tight site for 40ft trailer. No room for truck. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Great one night stay! Long pull thru, did not have to unhook. Easy in and out. Very friendly check in. Had trouble with dryer and they were quick to solve problem, refund money. They seem to be cleaning up the park, overgrown in places. Lots of monthly guests but all seemed friendly. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Gravel sites with cement patio, table, and tree. Very nice stopover with level pull-thrus. Close to highway but didn't notice noise. Wifi worked well. They also offer free use of bicycles. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I made reservations at least 2 months prior but when I arrived they didn't have any reservation for me, the owner said her husband probably did it and didn't put it in their system. This park is old and run down with over grown trees that makes it difficult to get to a site without scratching your RV. The utilities were at the back of the sites. The sites were long enough to not have to unhitch for a night (we have a 32 ft fifth wheel). No cable and the TV was impossible because it was all fuzzy. The sites were gravel and mostly level. Dog waste was left in places making this a very undesirable campground. I would never go back. The cost was $27 with a Good Sam card, there isn't much choice in this area, only really little towns. You could hear noise from the Hiway and train. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

My take: West Texas is desert - don't expect a lot of greenery. First impression was good; new electrical pedestals, groomed dirt/gravel sites, decorative, manicured trees, concrete patios. Safety: no concerns - peaceful. Access: I-10 exit 138 to West Broadway Avenue, road in good condition, big sign on south side of road. Office: CG accepts many discounts: AARP, GS, military, etc. Super friendly staff, token store with snacks, a few RV equipment items. Facilities: No pool, spa, or fitness room. Rec center with TV, sofas, being refurbished. Small, clean laundry room. Nice restrooms/showers out of the 90's but clean (score "A"). No playground. Fenced dog run. Campground: Sites are all pull-through, tent area, no yurts or cabins. Roads are dirt/gravel with gentle turns but watch for tree branches overhead. Brand new electrical pedestals with FHU-20/30/50. Sites are just an extension of the roads, no landscaping, level with pedestal at rear of your rig. Sewer pipe is about 6" above ground level. Nice concrete patio with "ok" picnic tables. Good satellite views. Open fires not permitted. Adequate water pressure and taste. No propane sales. Free cable TV (16 channels). Free Wi-Fi with antennas all over the place - excellent coverage and bandwidth. Verizon coverage at "5-bars". Railroad and interstate noise notable but tolerable. No recycle bins. Bug Report: small black ants - no issue. Runners: CG roads ok for running, no fitness room so no treadmills. Yoga: patios are plenty big enough for your mat. Conclusion: recommended. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Porter's Grocery on West Broadway, just west of the CG. Landromat also on W. Broadway, about ½ mile east of the CG. No Wal-Mart. A few local restaurants only, fast food: McDonalds, Wendys. Diesel at Valero on Van Horn, south of I-10 at $2.549/gal. Didn't see any banks. No RV stores but I did see some units getting service at local [auto] repair shops. Ace Hardware on corner of Ash and W. Broadway.
