Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for a week in June. The weekdays were good. There is a lot of wildlife to photograph. There weekend was bad. We saw multiple incidents where people were attacking nesting birds. The showers have not been maintained and the fans do not work making it nearly impossible to use them. There was plenty of parking space at our site for our toad. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Motorhome.

This COE park has spacious sites and several have good lake views. The sites on the southern loop cannot get to the water due to the extensive rip-rap on the shore line. Other sites, however, have access. Sites were not particularly level, and the asphalt was crumbling on the pad site and on the roads. There was a constant patrol by Park staff, and every evening of our weekend stay there were one or two city police cruisers at the campground until 3 a.m.. I don't think this speaks well to the base clientele - and there were a number of over-large groups that looked like they wanted to party hardy. Biggest issue we had was the dump station. It was poorly designed with a 2' x 2' concrete box with a lip that now sticks up above the surrounding gravel. Therefore, any "accidents" were all over the gravel and unable to be easily cleaned by flushing with the hose. This had happened, apparently with somebody ahead of us, and we had quite a mess to deal with (and wash off the bottom of our shoes). Also, the flush hose had a female end on it, not a male end, so it was unusable for my tank flush. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you're into fishing, there's a good boat ramp, and a LOT of fishermen on the lake. Although they all said they didn't catch anything all weekend.

Nice park, would rate higher if sites had sewer connections. Dump station was conveniently located, but strangely configured to make it difficult to dump without "accidents". Asphalt pads on several sites were badly buckled and needed to be repaved. Nice boat ramp and good lake views. Bathrooms were clean and staff was friendly and helpful. It was mostly families when we were there, it wasn't a rowdy group as when some other reviewers were there. Would stay there again. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

We camped in site 9 (water & 30A electric with central dump station) at Hanks Creek COE. Great pull through site with lake view. Spacious site. Site 11 is also very nice. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We were here to visit family near Zavalla for the Mother's Day weekend. There was a county park closer to our venue but it was very unkempt. This COE park is very clean, big sites, good spacing, and quiet. The only down side is that with all the trees we could not utilize our tv but since we were gone a lot, it was not a problem. There was no sewer hookup but that was not a problem. Staff was extremely friendly and competent and gave us info on area needs. The bathrooms did need a thorough cleaning but we made do with that. The baths were small cubicles that appeared not to have any venting. There was a skylight but the only opening was the door. We would stay here again for a few days. Since we do not fish, we did not ask for nor have a waterfront site. The site was plenty long for our tow car and 40 foot motorhome and trees were trimmed adequately so that we were not hitting trees going in or out of the park. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lufkin is the nearest town of any size. There is a mart/gas in Zavalla as well as a small grocery.

This is a great COE park. The sites are well spaced with plenty of room. Many sites are on the water. There are shelters with RV hookups. There are both 30 & 50 amp sites. The park has a swimming area and 2 boat launches. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Motorhome.

i have stayed here many times in my RV. I LOVE this campground. I wish they had sewer hookups and Wi-Fi but despite that, i will continue to stay here. It's very family friendly and safe. There's not a swimming area close by. You have to leave the RV park and drive around to the boat ramp to access swimming. They have a nice playground and paved roads to ride bikes on. The fishing is very good and most of the park is shady. Restrooms and showers are usually very clean. Great park! We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

Park is on Lake Sam Rayburn. It has boat ramps for the fishermen and separate swimming areas for the kiddies. Overall, the park was very clean and the people very nice. All sites are shady. It was quiet and a great place to unwind for a few days. We camped at Hanks Creek COE in a Motorhome.
