We were looking for a place to stay that would be convenient to hiking within the Needles District of Canyonlands NP. We're self contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed on a weekend in early May. This is a beautiful campground with inspiring views. It is very well maintained. New in 2017 is that sites in the A loop can be reserved. Sites 1-5 are very private and relatively large while sites 12-17 are arranged in a loop. Most sites require some leveling. Sites in the B loop are walk in and a bit smaller. Most sites have some shade for at least part of the day. There are no hookups although water is available near the bathrooms. There's no ATT or Verizon cell coverage and no wifi. The host was friendly and helpful. We camped at Squaw Flat / Needles Section (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are several hiking trails to choose from that leave from the CG. There are regular ranger programs in the evenings. The Visitor Center is 3.5 miles from the CG.

Why visit this national park and stay in this dry campground? For the dark skies and stars at night and for the vistas during the day.

Squaw Flats is a dry camp with two site loops, A & B, and no amenities beyond a central toilet and water spigot in each section. Most sites are suitable for cars and tents or small RV's. Only a few sites will accommodate larger RV's. First come, first served, so arrive by early afternoon for best choices of available sites. Also, there are no supplies available within the NP. If you don't bring it with you, you might find supplies just outside the national park boundaries at the private campground store located there. Also be aware that longer RV's may have trouble with the tight turn-arounds. There is no AT&T cell signal although there is Wi-Fi available at the visitors center.

Attractions? For me it is the night sky and the zillions of other stars that reside amongst the other well known landmarks of the sky. And yes, zillions is the proper term for the enormous amount of stars that cannot be seen when you're in a light polluted environment. Then there is the quiet... Long periods with no sound but the breeze in the pine needles and the chirp of the birds and in the evening, the buzz of the insects. Calming. Peaceful. Refreshing to the soul.

I cannot recommend strongly enough for you to also experience this place. It is simply wonderful. We camped at Squaw Flat / Needles Section (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to the various view points and take in the vistas. Understand the geology and the enormous amount of time represented in the exposed rock layers. But stay for the view of the stars. Best to plan your trip in the 10 days either side of the new moon. The moon suppresses your clear view of the stars. Campground is first-come - first served. Getting there by early afternoon will aid in getting a suitable site.

Rate reflects 50% Senior Pass discount. We have stayed at Squaw Flat many times and love the campground and the Needles section of the park. Some of the 26 sites are small and best suited for tents. Others, including 2 handicap sites, are long enough for practically any rig. As has been mentioned, a few sites have significant dips that require caution when backing in to avoid scraping. Sites are well separated from one another. The campground fills quickly during the spring and fall. No reservations. Overflow camping is allowed outside the park on BLM land. Water is available at the toilet facilities. Don't count on cell service, Wi-Fi, or over-the-air TV. This is a remote and beautiful area. We camped at Squaw Flat / Needles Section (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful, remote sites. No services, not even an electric outlet in the bathroom, so be prepared. No reservations, so only way to snag a site is to lay-up outside the park the day before and cruise around the loops at 8:30am. Loop B has smaller, closer together sites, but seem level. Loop A has the larger sites, but some, like ours slope up and had a big dip. Was a challenge not to rip off the back of the trailer, but once in, what a spot! Beautiful views and absolute peace. Ahhhhhhh. We camped at Squaw Flat / Needles Section (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.
