Beautiful location!! Very convenient to get on Skyline Drive north entrance. Close to Front Royal for shopping. Most of the Staff was friendly but campground host didn't like to be bothered. Restroom was never cleaned the first 7 days we were here. Only one restroom in RV section. Beautiful building on the outside. Our site was graveled but really tall grass and overgrowth all around campsites. Could be because they have had a lot of rain. Looked like they haven't mowed in quite sometime. Park looks like it isn't being well maintained. Had 50 amp service, and water hook up. There is a dump station. Change machine in laundry was out of service. Nice laundry cleaner than bathrooms. One washer was broken but it was fixed while we were there. No WiFi but 3 bars with ATT. Stayed here 7 days. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Motorhome.

Park is beautiful, but reception was not friendly. We pulled over at the gate but when I tried to go inside to register I was met by a loud voice saying: "You can't come in here!" She then slid open a window and said "What's your name?" She disappeared for a while and returned with an envelope. I said: "That's it?" She said "yep" and closed the window. (We'd made a "site-specific" reservation on their web site a few days earlier.) The campground map in the envelope showed only the camping area, so it took us a while to figure out where to go - it's a big park! Anyway, once we found our spot, it was great place. Excellent large, level sites and a beautiful area to hike and explore. We enjoyed our stay. Just don't expect a warm reception! We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The access road into the campground is very steep and curvy. Be prepared to use a low gear when approaching the campground. There is a nice trail along the river and a beautiful overlook over the river. I am sure there is a trail to the overlook but we drove as it was 1.5 miles and up a very steep hill. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is shopping in Front Royal about 10 miles to the north. The entrance to Shennandoah National Park & Skyline Drive is about 8 miles to the north and worth a visit.

Super park. We chose our site upon arrival. 30 amp and water in our loop. No cell or tv signal for us. Bathhouse very nice and clean with good laundry facility. We loved our site. It had a gorgeous view of the valley and mountains. Super hiking trails and close access to Shenandoah National Park. We loved the park and could have stayed for a long time with plenty of hiking left. We would stay here in this park again in a minute. It would be nice to have wifi and cell service. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

I'm almost afraid to say how perfect this park is at the risk of keeping it so peaceful and quiet. The sites are clearly marked, very large, have 50 amp hookups and water. The dump station is at the top of the hill. Most are surrounded by woods or shrubs so you can't really see the neighbors. There's no cell service in the actual campground but if you drive out to the entrance, you can get sketchy service. There's a well marked trail that runs right along the river and acres of wide, open spaces. The camp hosts on duty were SO friendly and easy to talk to. Bathroom was clean and well maintained. We had our dogs and noticed many others did as well but didn't hear any excessive barking. All in all, one of the best places we've camped in for a while. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Past reviews cover this place pretty well. Nice size level sites, no cell phone coverage, not OTA TV. We were here in Oct, gate house closed, but there was an envelope at gate for those with reservations, find a spot and set up. Site specific reservations will be available next year. Nice hikes along the river from the campground. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here 2 nights on a trip return from Cape Cod. I will go back and stay longer! Beautiful setting by the Shenandoah river with gorgeous mountain views. Well maintained trails for different activities and levels of physical ablilities. Our campsite was very spacious, gravel paved with a nice fire ring with grill. Spacing between campsites was great! There is no phone reception or internet and that added to the charm. I cannot wait to return. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Front Royal is a quaint town with antique shops and a wonderful coffee shop, The Morning Grind. In the opposite direction is Luray Caverns and in nearby Sperryville a great distillery, the Copper Fox. Lots of wineries nearby but we did have time to visit.

RV sites area all roomy and level. However, until March 2018, there are no reserved spots. 32 sites with water and electric hookups for various equipment - tents, popups and RVs up to 60 feet long. Twenty-seven sites are back-in, and five are pull-through. The advantage of the back-in sites is that the side areas are quite large. Some of the roomiest sites I have seen. All sites are level and graveled. They advertise that site assignment is made upon arrival, but we arrived and were told to go pick a site that was not tagged, and set up camp. However, this was a rainy weekend, before the height of vacation season. All have a side area with table, fire pit and lantern poles. No sewer connections, but convenient trash and dump site. Dog friendly. Be aware that with Verizon we had no cell service in the park, and not on the road until we were close to Luray in one direction and Front Royal in the other. So cable. No TV reception. There are small cabins in the campground also. Pets are allowed in the cabins for a fee. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Grocery shopping in Front Royal. Also a tiny mini mart grocery store at Sunoco gas station 1 minute south of campground. All sites are good, not just the one that we were on. Back-in sites seem more level than pull-through sites.

We stayed in the site closest to the river. Level, and no problems with the 30 amp service. Very clean restrooms and showers, as we have come to expect in Virginia State Parks. A few pull thru sites.

There are plenty of trails here. There are about 3 miles of flat trail along the beautiful river, and numerous more challenging trails on the hillside. If you have a retriever, there are a number of great spots for your dog to get in the river, including one about 50 feet from our camp site.

The park is new and has a great visitor center. Very friendly and helpful staff.

We stayed three nights in October before the leaves changed, which are very late this year. 45 degrees over night but warming up quickly by 10am. Will definitely return with bicycles and canoe next time. We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very large and long sites. Sites are first come first served. Mostly level. Att service 3 bars. Verizon & Sprint do not work here. Wifi available at visitor center only. Dog swimming at river access, walking distance from RVs. If power pedestal does not work, or if it keeps tripping, tell camp host, they will call ranger to put in new breaker ASAP. Excellent camp hosts. Park staff lawn mowers need to be trained to be more careful around large motorhomes, they almost hit us at an intersection! RV sites are big rig friendly. The pull through sites below the camp hosts are not level. Very beautiful campground. Lowest priced big rig 50 amp and water campground to Shenandoah & Luray. Dump station. No wifi. Att data signal excellent. Avoid arriving in dark, no street lights, very dark, except for annoying bath house security lights that are on all night. It would be nearly impossible to find any negative things to say about this Park. The campground within the park is modern, new and very clean. The spaces are huge and water and electric are present at each pad. Dump out is at exit. The park has great trails perfect for biking and hiking... we explored nearly all of the trails in 4 days. The views are breathtaking. River and trail access is just steps from your camper... theres a lot to do in this park. my only gripe would be they have not installed wifi... which for today's traveler is really useful for planning.
The park is fairly large and it can take a few days to explore all of it, it's a 4 day minimum adventure! Biking, hiking, horse back, canoe and zip lining are all right here ! We camped at Shenandoah River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The park features a very nice visitors center with a lot of information. I recommend hiking the trails at night with a flashlight for spotting wildlife. Our favorite trail was the furtherest from the campground "Wildcat Ledge" - breathtaking views! The flood plain areas and valleys of the park are so beautiful and quiet, you'll feel very immersed in nature.
