My family has tent camped at this park many times, and this was the first outing with our new-to-us hybrid travel trailer. We picked a pull-through site to avoid the stress of backing in, but plenty of the non-pull-through sites would work for different size travel trailers. Keep in mind that at this park (and most VA state parks) you reserve a TYPE of site, and then pick the site when you get there from what is available. We picked site #10, and loved it.
It's a wonderful and quiet park with mature trees all around. Our site was more or less level, and was in good shape. There's plenty to do at the park. Swift Creek is great for canoeing or fishing, and the water park is good if you have young kids. Unfortunately, though, many of the locals use it as their public pool, so you will encounter some sketchy individuals at times. We prefer to camp here in the spring or fall, when the pool isn't open. This will definitely be our go-to park for a quick weekend getaway. - SteveMM

Like most state park campgrounds Pocahontas offers large sites. The entire park could be explored with many hiking trails and watercraft. Unfortunately the CCC museum is closed on weekdays at this time of year so we missed that feature. We were able to hike on some of the trails. It's an excellent state park. - rvrose

Very nice state park near Richmond and Petersburg. The park was full so reservations are recommended. Long pull-throughs were easy to manage. A very popular place to camp. - slay
Sep 2016 - $35.00
This a small self-contained only park is on the front end of a mobile home park screened by trees. The office has a night registration board, mail slot was hidden behind the board, no way to tell if an empty site was reserved. Other than a small playground, there are no amenities here other than site hookups. There is road noise from Rt 1 but it quiets down at night and the very bright security light would make those staying closest to the office think that a UFO is about to beam them up. No cable, but local OTA channels are good with the standard antenna. Most sites have clear satellite access. Most are level pull throughs. The voltage may drop on a warm sunny day when they have a full house. Good place to stay for a few nights if visiting the area. - Trailbuddy

No instructions/rules upon arrival. Good for overnight. Gravel site. Good WiFi. Senior discount! - Retired FL CSM
May 2016 - $35.00
We had a pull-through, but found that the sewer connection was at the back of the site. It was either go buy more sewer house or unhook the toad, so we unhooked the toad. No problems hooking up the water or electric. The road and sites were gravel and with all the rain that day, there were puddles, especially around the sewer connection. The site was level. There was no cable TV, but antenna and satellite worked fine. The Wi-Fi was spotty, even using a booster. There is no one in the office over the weekend, and you register on the weekends under the porch, near the office door. - Bbtj

We really appreciate the Americamps. We have stayed there many times when visiting family in Richmond. Now that we live in Richmond we use them to prep the coach prior to our long trips. We move the coach from our storage location to Americamps for a couple of days to get it ready for travel. They are just so nice and accommodating. The RV park is convenient for I-95 travelers, clean and well maintained. It is a bit pricey but it is really the only nice alternative in the immediate area. - Allure470
Jan 2017 - $50.00
We have stayed here on many occasions, generally for the first night out and last night before returning home on north/south trips. The staff is friendly, campground clean and convenient to I-95. We were pleasantly surprised on arriving to discover they were hosting a "Spanish" New Year's Eve dinner. Also, love the morning Pancake/waffle breakfasts! We will continue to return. - dandd
Oct 2016 - $51.00
This was just an overnight stay for us. Sites are quite close but a pull through site accommodated our 40 foot RV with toad. Restrooms and showers are very clean. Nice dog park.
Easy access from main highway but traffic noise at night could be an issue.
The office and community buildings were spotless! Staff pleasant and eager to provide assistance.
The free waffle breakfast is fantastic! Juice, Keurig coffee cups, tea, hot cocoa and fruit cocktail complement the fresh-made Belgian-style waffles.
Grounds are well groomed. - Lab Lovers
Dec 2015 - $30.00
We were visiting family in the area and needed a place to stay. This was the only campground we could find nearby that was open. When we arrived around 1 in the afternoon, there was a note on the office door that no one was available to call a phone number. We called the number and were told to pick a site that the owner would return after 4 in the afternoon. We drove around the campground where there were large trees and could not figure out where each campsite began and ended or the amenities at the site. We finally parked by the office and walked around to find a campsite. We discovered that they had a paved area where we could park for the night. We pulled into one of the sites, unhooked the RV, and started setting up. The electrical did not work. We had to hook everything up again and try and different site. The second site did have electric, water, and sewer. These sites were in an open parking lot with no trees. When the owner finally came by, she did not have change for cash so she only charged us $30 instead of the usual $35. She told us her husband died in 2008 and she was trying to run the campground alone. It appears that there has been very little maintenance in many years.
We will NOT stay here again. - Athens4me
Nov 2015 - $35.00
Older park not in great shape, but only one in the area open all year. They have seasonals on the wooded sites; we were there only for a night, so they put is in the big gravel lot where you park bumper to bumper with other units and there is very little space in between. But it was winter & wet and we did not get stuck! We would have been more disappointed if we had not read the reviews first, but very little choice in the area for winter! - chasing60
Aug 2011 - $35.00
I was not informed over the phone that cell phones do not work anywhere in the area nor is there a public payphone or internet. There is a lot of alcohol present. The facilities are dirty and in disrepair. The showers clog up. People are charged for use of things including pool which is dirty and is only a plastic lined pool. The sewage hook ups do not properly work and you are charged to dump at dumping station. There are long term campers that are loud 24 hours a day. Refunds are not given. - Dawn-Michelle
Jul 2016 - $65.00
Stayed here while visiting the amusement park on the way back from Myrtle Beach. Wife, 2 girls (8 and 13), and the dog.
Good check in experience: very welcoming and helpful. They did send us down the entry road the wrong way, however so we had to work our way around so we could approach our site correctly to back in. Had to go back to ask for a branch to be cut to accommodate my rig. They sent someone over right away and we took care of it. Very responsive.
Nice grounds. Lots of trees, but also sites without. Good roads. Odd set-up at some sites where rigs are facing each other: so you are kind of camping with your neighbors. Had not seen that before. Some hookups on the opposite side of the camper. Not sure if we would have reached. Had not heard anything negative about it however. Rained hard while we were here at night. Some sites have poor drainage and water was there for quite a while. Others drained better. Ours was OKish, the one next to ours at the end was really bad.
Not many people here during the week, weekends busier. Wifi was excellent. Bathrooms/showers very nice. There is really only one location, so if the park was full (and had a lot of tenters), I would think this would be a challenge with capacity. We did not have that issue.
Transportation supplied to the park if desired. We did not use since I had to go back/forth numerous times for our dog.
Overall a nice campground. Good facilities. Helpful staff. Perfect for a few days to head to the park. Did not explore surrounding area much. Did not use the pool but one is here. - T.Butter
Jul 2016 - $70.00
Very nice and clean park. We stayed in July during the week (5 days) and the campground was less than 1/2 full. We had a premium pull through site with a concrete pad so the site was top notch and level. Showers house had a/c and was always clean. Very quiet and peaceful during our stay. Although the staff is very friendly, they don't understand the way an RV turns so they gave us less than ideal directions to our site forcing us to make a tight turn that could have easily been avoided by sending us down the correct road. Lots of shade/trees throughout the campground. Some of the streets are tight especially in the "older" (never updated section) designated for tents and small units (so avoid those roads with larger rigs). Overall a great campground when on a site that matches your rig/needs. A little pricey, but you are paying for the convenience to be next door to Kings Dominion with shuttle service. - IBpraisingGod
Jun 2016 - $50.00
This is a true 'campground' for those who love to be close to their neighbors. While there are some 'rv park' type sites for longer motorcoach vehicles, with pull thrus, most of the sites are for tenting, pop-ups, and shorter back-ins. Trees shade most of the park, which is nice during the hot summer months for most campers. It's pricey, but convenient to Kings Dominion, and a free shuttle runs every few minutes. While other parks might be a lower cost, and less folks close by, the convenience of leaving the car at the campground trumped. The shuttle also allowed us to let the teens come and go to the rides when they so chose, not something that we could have done at a park 10 miles away.
Our site was short, but my 17 wheelbase made it acceptable, though it was wet and muddy right outside our door because of recent rains. The site on our driver side was never used, which was actually nice for us, since it was so muddy on the door side that no one would accept it for the money they were being charged.
Wifi was easy to attach to, but was only clocked at 1 to 1 1/2 mbps, not so great, but doable.
While the main 'streets' are mostly asphalt, ours had a severe turn near the end, and many trees had limbs encroaching the height of a class a or fifth wheel.
During the summer months, especially weekends, this place is packed - kids and parents walking and biking all over, dogs being walked constantly, and RVs of all sorts coming and going. This is not an 'rv park' for those of us who are looking for an overnight stay.
The facilities, overall, are acceptable, and probably fun for those weekenders and vacationers looking for that 'camping' experience with their neighbors. - hturnerfamily
Sep 2016 - $34.00
Stayed in a gravel back in spot with lots of room. Had electric and water but no sewer. This was OK for we were only staying a couple of nights. Staff was friendly and helpful and helped me park. - BobsFixIt
Aug 2016 - $35.00
Several long level paved pull through sites for the traveler. Park is mostly long term combination of workers and local military. Mostly well kept. Immaculate bathhouse. Pool looked inviting, but we did not use. Small fishing lake, where our Golden Retriever enjoyed a swim. Convenient to I85, just south of Petersburg. Worked well for us for an overnight, we would probably return. - 2hams
Jul 2016 - $32.00
Our first visit and an unexpected pleasure. Was a bit concerned as no reservation confirmation was received (later learned that was their norm), but from our arrival all concerns were put to rest. Again, this was an overnight stop for us, but it had everything a family with children would want. Nice large pool, fishing pond, large grass play space and a playground for the younger set. Our pull-thru site was long, level and paved. Office featured a well stocked store and very friendly and helpful staff. Great find. - Dunwoodyradio
