This is perhaps one of my favorite places so far...another truly spectacular Corps of Engineers campground, one of several on Kerr Lake (or Bugg Island if you're a Virginian.) The lake was close to its highest levels due to torrential rains from both Florence and Michael hurricanes and there were some campsites still under water with some flood damage. The campground is quite large, broken up into 4 loops. B, C & D have electric and water available, as well as tent sites on the beach. D was closed for the season but we walked around and it is also quite nice. Our neighbor said they camp here often and prefer North Bend to all others on the lake with C loop as their personal favorite. Campsites are way too cool with picnic areas terraced down to the lake shore. Heavily shaded but we still enjoyed beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Sites are well spaced and I noticed there are separate parking spaces for additional vehicles at some sites. Even though it was quite chilly we cracked a window just to hear the waves lapping on the shoreline. So quiet and peaceful. Campground was almost empty even though the weather was perfect. There is only one shower/bath house but it was plenty large enough to accommodate a full campground. Facilities were spotless as was our campsite. There is a separate swim beach, boat ramp and playground in C loop. Lake access is available via walking paths every few sites for those folks not on the lake. A paved walking trail to the dam is level and mostly shaded. We stayed only two nights and I was very sad to leave. We will definitely be returning to this tranquil place. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out the visitor center with good information on the dam's building history. The nature center was closed for the season but looked to be equally as interesting. North Bend is a place to stay put since there is not much else to do other than enjoy nature and the many lake activities.

Over night stay. A bit off the main highway but the senior discount made it worthwhile. Large lake swimming beach loop B not very good loop C beach seemed better. People fishing, kayaking, and boating on the lake. Loop D currently closed for season. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful large lake with many camping sites right along the shoreline. Nice sand beach with lots of shade trees. Shallow lake with sandy shore great for swimming or other water sports. Saw lots of people boating and fishing. RV site just steps from the beach. Could hear waves lapping on shore at night. There are designated swimming beaches (where dogs are not allowed) but never saw anyone using them. The beaches are so nice adjacent to the campsites there was no reason to go elsewhere. Bathrooms/showers very clean and new. Most sites have additional parking immediately adjacent. Easy check in process at entrance, otherwise did not see any staff on premises. Lakeside RV spots full on a weekend in August. Interior RV spots mostly empty. Tent spots almost completely empty. Would not be able to see the lake from the interior RV spots, but these are still only about 50 feet from the beach. Overall pretty quiet. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This RV park is in the middle of nowhere. Wonderful destination if you are interested in relaxing at the lake. If you are interested in sight-seeing or dining out, this is not your place. Closest stores would probably be in South Hill, about 15-20 miles away.

We stay at this C.O.E. park a number of times each year. The sites are spacious, heavily treed, and a combination of both pull-thrus and back-ins. The park is situated on a lake with any number of excellent boat access ramps with parking. The Army Corps of Engineers (COE) contract for outside business for park/site/restroom maintenance and they do a very good job. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Motorhome.

This was as nice an ACOE park as we have been to. Huge sites, a lovely lake, and miles and miles of bike trails. OK ... so our cell-phones barely worked, and we were never able to get a satellite signal, even after we changed sites, but you can't have everything. Using a booster, we were able to get just enough of a cell-signal to use the internet and stream (sometimes). There were a few OTA channels, but not many. This is a great park, and a great value. Off the main path, for sure, but very very nice. We would stay here again, for sure! We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Motorhome.

Beautiful park on large lake with marina & beach. Large walking/biking path throughout park. Site level with large step down table/grill area. Restrooms/showers combined with individual locked door. Very nice park. Would rate higher if had sewer hook up. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Our favorite regular campground, we stay several times a year. Corps of Engineers run, gated and lots of rangers. Very clean and well kept with lots of easy dump station access. Lots of E&W hookups but weekends get booked up early. We prefer some of the "dry" or tent areas as they have some of the best open lake views, you are right on the water and they can have more availability on weekends or last minute. Lots of shade, very clean restrooms and showers, some newer than others depending on section. Miles of paved trails and bike paths. Huge boating lake with lots of access. Lots of fellow campers will also have boats, and you can typically anchor or pull up on the beaches or shoreline right by your site or nearby. Lots of fisherman on the weekend, but this beautiful lake is huge. Very safe. Kids will have a blast. This CG is in a rural area on a very huge lake with 800 miles of shoreline. Sites are big and beautiful spread out over 4 large sprawling and wooded sections, but all are gravel, most all are pretty level, all have picnic tables and fire rings. This is not a big commercial CG with commercial amenities nor is it close to much population. This is all about the lake and lake life. If you're looking for pools and clubhouses this isn't it, this is more rustic, private, natural, and all about the lake. Weekends can fill up, though it's still a roomy place, but weekdays can be very quiet with far fewer campers. There are a few other COE CGs on the lake, all nice and very similar, but NorthBend is our favorite. We call it the best kept secret in the MidAtlantic. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a small country gas/convenience store just a few miles away that has most anything you need in a pinch, plus a great little Italian restaurant right across the street from the convenience store. South Hill is about 20 minutes away with a WalMart, small town shopping, and all the fast food and hotel chains.

This is a large COE campground, on John Kerr Lake. Campground roads are paved, with gravel on the sites, but some are a bit muddy. Sites are mostly overgrown and need clearing to allow more breezes and a view of the lake! C & D section have some turns where you have to watch-out for the leaning trees – the bruises show. All sites are at least partially shaded and have tables, fire-rings and lamp posts. Bathhouse is very good and was kept clean. There is a lot of boat noise that starts early on weekends. TV reception was mediocre with antenna and Verizon cell phone worked great. This year for whatever reason, the chiggers (red bugs) were simply terrible. Everyone I talked with was bitten many times. We camped here for 6 days, in a 5th wheel and will stay here again. Rate shown is with senior pass. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.

I wanted to like this campground, but it was too removed from anything. It's a minimum of a half an hour to get groceries, pharmacy, or anything. The hosts were friendly and the park rangers were a constant presence (which was fine). This is a heavily wooded park. No grassy spaces anywhere and sites were gravel. Cell service (AT&T) would come and go, mostly go. We will not return. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Very pretty COE campground with gravel sites, electric and water hookup and new bathhouses which were clean on our weekday visit. Some sites are hard to get into with a larger rig or have trees in the way, but many work just fine. Many sites have a view of the lake. Work has been done to eliminate trees which helps. Sites are large, typically with a spot (at least nearby) to park a boat. Rate was with senior pass. We camped at North Bend Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.
