This was an interesting experience, staying at Breaks Interstate Park. There were many firsts. 1-I had to pay just to enter the park, regardless of the reservation I had or the window tag issued to me at the campground (this was a one time fee, though). 2-I reserved and paid for a site with water/electric and sewer, but got only a water/electric site. 3-The site (D-101), was terrible! It was literally a roadside pull-off that was just wide enough for my RV with the door being less than a foot off the road. My son and his friends stayed in a tent that was equally close to the road. The fire ring felt like a community fire since it was right beside the road. Small consolation, but there was a worse site (D-88), that was literally part of the kids' play place. 4-Every other Va. state park I stayed at (Pocahontas, Natural Tunnel, etc.) included the water park/pool. To swim at the pool/water park at Breaks was an additional 10 dollars per person. 5-I bought firewood at the camp store and it was so wet that I was unable to burn it. I ended up leaving it in the fire ring. 6-The men's bathhouse floor in the D campground was perpetually flooded. I'm not sure if the drain was backing up or where the water was coming from. I was told that they have to be self supporting so that may be the reason for the additional fees. It was a surprise to find out at camp, though. The camp is beautiful, with some amazing views. However, the most valuable part of this camp is its people! I don't have names unfortunately. The camp host at the D campground was great! He found us another spot to put a tent that wasn't on our campsite. We ended up not using it though. The camp superintendent was awesome! We had what turned out to be a minor medical emergency that required a trip to a hospital. He and the other park rangers were amazing! In addition to making sure that help was sent, they helped until the ambulance arrived. Once at the hospital, they came to pick us up from the hospital! We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a great place to go hiking. The views from the scenic overlooks made the very long day of hiking worthwhile. We went to Natural Tunnel for a day trip and the staff there seemed unfamiliar with the relationship of Breaks Interstate park to the rest of the park system. It is close to many interesting destinations.

We stayed in "Campground A." The site was level and the hookups were in good shape. There was, however, a sewage treatment facility over the hill that ran off and on and was fairly noisy. The bath house was - well - not good. It was old. One of the urinals wasn't working. There were two showers which just weren't very nice. Lots of water on the floor and just generally sort of run down. The rate schedule is misleading. We were told $24. We arrived and were charged a $2 entry fee. Also we were assessed a $5 first time camper fee. Apart from the droning of the sewage treatment plant the ambiance was above average. No WiFi or cell service. We will not return. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Travel Trailer.

Seems they had horseback riding and I imagine hiking oportunities. There was a swimming pool in the park, but not nearby.

This is an old, tired park in a lovely part of Virginia. It is greatly in need of modernizing and upgrading. Campsites were not at all level and gravel pads needed grading. Electric hookups had broken covers; some looked like they had been hit by trucks. Bathhouse had rusty fixtures, and their concrete floors had worn-off paint and smelled damp. However, both staff and campground hosts were extremely friendly, and hiking trails were well-marked. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Motorhome.

Small, un-level gravel/mostly dirt sites. Poison Ivy growing all around sites. CG rules not enforced regarding cars/people per site. Road access to park difficult. Other park facilities looked very good, but CG in need of upgrade and maintenance. Had FHU site( a good feature). Inadequate trash facilities. Camp hosts were very helpful. Adequate Verizon cell service. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Motorhome.

Some of the sites were small or the utility boxes were in the wrong location for some rigs. A bundle of wood was $4.00 and there was also a one time entrance fee of $5.00. The park was clean and safe. I only used the Campground A bathroom facilities and they were clean and well stocked with supplies. There is road work outside the park and some spots are taken by workers. The prices for supplies in the camp store were high and the nearest grocery/shopping area is 15 miles. The onsite restaurant is just OK. The mashed potatoes are instant and way too watery - the burgers were good. Since we were there during low season the stores, paddle boats and fishing boats were only available Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I gave this campground an 8 because they weren't very good at enforcing the rules. One camper's dog was allowed to run free and another had a generator that ran at night. When we asked a park ranger about enforcement, he stated that at this time of year, if there are no complaints, they tend to look the other way. We had a great time and will definitely return. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a beautiful park but has its problems. Sent in and told to choose our site with no map: not a good idea. We went down the wrong loop and had quite a time getting out with our 38 ft fiver. Stayed on loop C which has beautifully full shaded, but not level sites. It also is the only site without a comfort station. So if you don't want to use your shower, it is a long walk to the loops with facilities, which are in need of repair and some consistent cleaning. No WiFi and cell service is marginal at best. Nearest gas station is 8 miles one way. Nearest Walmart or grocery store is 17 miles one way. Come prepared. But this park is gorgeous. The views are amazing. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Fifth Wheel.

What a beautiful place! The park is very well sited to preserve the natural surroundings. We found several sites that would accommodate our toy hauler. However, large rig owners should be aware that many of the nominally 40' sites will not accommodate a rig nearly that large. Also large rigs should choose their access route carefully. Not all routes are pleasant. We had AT&T cell coverage in the campground. There is Wifi at the lodge. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Fifth Wheel.

You choose your site but be careful as interior roads on the B loop are very tight and some sites are difficult to get into. We found a nice pull-through site in Loop A but had to use the blocks to level out the rig. We chose not to use their showers because they were old and disgusting. We left after 4 days (had a 7 day stay planned) as the rain was horrible and the ground was already saturated. We would not stay here again. It is tough to get to and the hiking trails were in disrepair (I'm a trail maintenance guy from western NC), rocky, wet, and dangerous. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the one campground I really wanted to get to this year in my travels. I had heard about this canyon and wanted to see it for myself. I read that the overnight fee was low: I do not believe camping should be expensive seeing you bring everything to do it with you. So off I went to find the place. What a drive! The canyon and rock formations therein are pretty. The campground was awful. It was horribly crowded for a weekday. The bathroom was dirty. It was loud till about 2 in the morning. The people I checked in with, had bad attitudes. I almost jumped up and down and yelled: "Get happy people! This is a vacation spot!" However I figured it would be lost on them. I won't return, but I got some nice pictures of the canyon. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Truck Camper.

This CG is owned jointly by VA and KY and both states should be ashamed. The park doesn't take reservations although many were "rented" when we arrived and were not available even though no one was occupying them. On Memorial Day the staff seemed to cram as many campers into sites as possible. The single site across from us had three campers on it and this was true of many of the sites. There was a class A parked outside the restroom with an extension cord running into the bathroom the entire weekend. There were no locks on the doors in the womens toilet stalls. We were told that there was no full hook-up site available when we called but, when we arrived, the ranger had one that she was "holding back" but we could have it. The laundry room was locked and we had to drive to the visitor center to have someone open it even though it was two hours past opening hours. The staff were hard to find but friendly when you did find someone. The hiking within the park was excellent with well-marked trails. We camped at Breaks Interstate Park in a Travel Trailer.
