We stayed here two nights with water and electric hook ups. We never ventured into Richmond. Such a beautiful park, secluded and a lot to do. We visited the CCC museum at the park, attended a free outdoor concert in the amphitheater (got lucky they had one the night we arrived) and used the free passes to the pool. The pool is also used by locals and since it was so hot, the pool was crowded. Would defiantly stay here again. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

It an easy access on/off highway. It has a beach which if you camp here they give you a free pass to the beach. It's a very clean state park and a lot of room between sites. The only downsize is that there is no cable or WiFi. Otherwise, this campground is awesome and would definitely return if in the area. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a very nice state park. We had a pull-through site that was long enough for our 45' fifth wheel and Freightliner HDT, but it was very un-level side-to-side. Our passenger-side wheels were all off the ground when leveled. There are numerous trails for walking, biking, mountain biking, and even horse-back riding. They are clearly marked and easy to find. However, the bug are vicious. If bugs typically like you, then put your bug spray on first time and every time! I think they were like sand fleas, since most of the bites on me were around the ankles and up the calves a bit. We saw turtles on our walk around the smaller lake, and after a heavy storm - where we lost power for about 4 hours - we found a couple of teeny turtles on the paved road surfaces. Lots of birds, peaceful and quiet, we even saw a racoon. We really enjoyed our stay even though it was 10+ degrees warmer than normal the week we were there. Close enough to Chesterfield to find all the normal shopping, including a Walmart. The price was reasonable considering the area - and we got a discount from being REI members because they're doing some kind of promotion this year. All the sites seem to have a large gravel tent area in addition to the RV space. Very nice, I'm sure we'll stay again if our travels bring us here in the future. Showers were individual rooms with just the shower and a bench, but plenty of room. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out El Caporal Mexican Restaurant, about 5 miles away on Beach Rd and Hwy 10 across from the Krogers - amazing food. Try the carnitas, they were sublime. Good salsa and drink specials made for an amazing lunch.

We stayed for five nights on a nice pull thru site. There were lots of trees for shade, but they didn't obscure anyone wanting to get satellite. The site ran downhill but not so much that it made leveling too hard. The utilities were placed and worked well. We got several local TV stations on the antenna. There was plenty of space between us and the neighbors. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere but are only about ten minutes to anything you might need. We do have one major complaint though. Do NOT come in from Hull Street onto Spring Run Road to Beach. Spring Run is VERY narrow. Locals drive the road very fast. The curves are tight and are not angled properly which causes those fast locals to hug the center line. There are no shoulders on either side. We were in a 35' class A towing a car on a dolly. The dolly went off the road several times and the RV nearly did once as well. Come into the campground from Courthouse Road onto Beach. It's still narrow, but nothing like Spring Run Road. There is also a nice swimming pool at the campground although it wasn't open when we visited. A nice laundry room is also available. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

I stayed here while my son was running in the Ragnar Relay Race at this park. I had a pleasant stay. The electric was always on, the water pressure was very good and I got 14 TV channels OTA. Originally, they gave me site 19. However, my RV bottomed out while backing in. So they switched me to site 17 and all was good. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

Thoroughly enjoyed staying here while visiting family nearby. Everyone we talked to was very friendly and helpful! Could have spent much more time here exploring the trails and other things to do. I expect this is one busy campground in season. Sites were spacious and level in our loop. Some of the front loop looked a little uneven so glad we were in the back loop. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We made a last minute reservation for a night at this park and were glad that we did. Loved the thoughtful layout of the sites in the section we stayed in (site 77). Plenty of room to maneuver, pull through site that was fairly level (only slight adjustment needed), and a spacious tent area adjacent to the paved site. Arrived after dark but the site was well marked. 50 amp service but something caused our breaker to blow. All OK after disconnecting everything and then reconnecting. A reminder of the value of a surge protector, which we had. Very nice heated bathhouse. No on site sewer but dump station is available in the park. A bit pricey, but we would have stayed longer if we could have. Will return here for sure! We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The nightly rate is for non-VA resident. A huge state park with 100s of campsites, dozens of hiking and biking trails, lakes with boat rentals, fishing piers, and a water park/pool area. Park was mostly empty during our Nov visit, but I'm sure it fills up quickly during the summer. Our pull-thru spot required some leveling. Back-in spots were spacious with limited shade. Park also has cabins and yurts for rent. Several camp-stores, bath houses, and laundry facilities throughout the park. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Nice larger VA State Park with about 130 sites. We went here on a weekend and it is a popular park. If you reserve a 40' unassigned site come early on Friday to get the best sites. I showed up at 2 pm and had a pretty good selection to choose from but they really started rolling in about 4 pm. There is no early check in fee. We were in site 4 which is a pull through. It was mostly shaded and fairly private. As stated in other reviews all the shade is in the front loop. The back loop is pretty much all sun. One of the features I really like but didn't need this trip was the overflow parking arrangement. In most campground the overflow parking is a bunch of spaces in one location and if you are close good but if not .... This park has numerous overflow parking areas with just a few spots in each site. Makes it much more likely you will be close to one if needed. The camp store is very small but you are not too far from shopping in town. Nice long and narrow lake. There is paddle boat, canoe and kayak rentals. Bait is sold at the boat rental but if you need it get it the night you get there. The boat rental shop does not open until 10. A little late in my opinion. Overall one of my favorite state parks. If you like water sports you will like it too. I forgot to mention that there is a water park with slides. I didn't use it as I spent the weekend in my kayak but entrance is included with your camping fee. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a very large and well-manicured state park. The terrain is rolling. The back-in 30amp sites are less shaded than others and a satellite signal from a roof mounted dish is obtainable from many of them. Verizon signal okay. Sites are well spaced with privacy from tall trees and shrubs. The dump station was well maintained Gate and check-in staff offered a pleasant greeting. Rate above includes $35 non-resident Virginian for w&e and $5 for reservation fee (even if a site is obtained same day at the park). There is also sales tax. A nice getaway. Want to visit the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum in the park on my next visit. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We love this park. This is our second time staying here. If you have younger children they have a fantastic aquatic center. A toddler pool, a pool with playground, a very large 3 ft deep pool, a smaller 5 ft deep pool, a splash park, and 2 water slides. We came here at the request of our 7 year old because he had so much fun last year. The aquatic center is free with camping and definitely worth it. My only concern is that they do not offer reserved sites. You are guaranteed a spot but it is first come first serve. I came in on a Saturday so as you can imagine the park was very full. I believe there were only three spots to choose from. the spot we ended up in had good shade but was very unlevel and the spot next door was very close. The neighbors left Sunday and no one else moved in before we left so it was not a big deal. We of course enjoyed the water park every day save one. We also were able to visit the Petersburg Civil War battle site, Blandford cemetery, Poplar Grove National Cemetery, City Point National Cemetery, Tuckahoe Plantation, and several area breweries. It is only a short drive to Richmond where there is a lot more places to explore. We have already been informed by the boy that he wants to come here every year. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

The sites had a lot of space between them, but you're not gonna find any shade on any of the back-in sites. So be prepared to run your AC. Also, for some reason this campground had a lot of ticks. A lot of the sites were level, but many of the pull-thru's seemed to not be that level. We had a back in and had our choice of level sites. Water/electric were very well-positioned. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed on a buddy site with two other family members. This was the first time we saw this type of setup and loved it! We all have motor homes and loved the layout. The campground was nicely laid out although it's a bit confusing to find your way around. There were picnic tables and firepits available. The laundry was very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The utilities were reasonably placed for ease of use. The sites were a bit unlevel but not bad. The park is off the beaten path, and the roads leading to it are quite narrow. A friend nearly flipped their RV into the ditch on the rainy dark roads. We didn't use the bathrooms but the swimming area was very nice. We would definitely come back again because it's within easy reach of everything while still being off the beaten path. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.

Sites not assigned and the later you get there the less choice you have. They will tell you that all sites can handle rigs to 40' but that does not mean you'll be level. We got there on a Sat at 2 and found 1 spot we could use. There are a number of loops but the sites above 69 are in a loop that seems to be more popular with people with kids. There are kids riding all over on bikes. By Sunday afternoon the park was almost empty and the host told us that only in summer and school holidays is it busy all week. Access is very easy to the campground and the sites. Epic and water on soye-dump station on the way out. There are garbage bins throughout the part and a recycling bin at the dump station however Chesterfield Co sorts all their garbage and recyclables in the trash will be sorted out. Showers are clean and OK. It was quiet at night but the camp host told me it can be very noisy on summer holiday weekends and if you have any problems with noise the ranger should be called. Check in is easy and the rangers are helpful. There is a small gift store where you check in and a campsite in the campground-but I did not visit it. Supposedly there is Wifi but my phone did not find it. We had 2 bars of AT&T unboosted but 4 with the booster. There is a Food Lion grocery store about 4 miles from the campground. Also, since we had a small medical issue while there I can say that there is a Bettermed urgent care facility about 20 minutes away that is EXCELLENT as is the Bon Secours Hospital ER in Midlothian (20 min also) There is also supposedly a laundry on site but I neither saw nor used it. We camped at Pocahontas State Park in a Motorhome.
