You just can't beat the Virginia State Parks. The attendants are courteous and helpful. The sites and surrounds are always clean, and the price is reasonable. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground works well as either a transit stopover or as a destination. Located only 3 miles off of I-81 it has very level pull thru sites with electric and water in loop D. Sites are well kept gravel pads but are fairly close together with no understory for privacy. The entire park was very well maintained. There are rental boats, a beach, playground, and trails if you want to stay a few days. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Another great Virginia State park, lots to do swim, fish, hike, picnic, or just relax. Children everywhere having a great time and not looking at a cell phone. Campground was clean and well keep, sites were easy to get in and out. Our site was very level. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fishing, I didn't go but a lot of the people I talk to said the fishing was great, but they didn't give away where the best fishing holes were.

We have stayed at Claytor Lake before and are always glad to stop here to get off the road. It is very convenient to I-81, and offers the outdoor benefits of a lovely state park, lots of green area to stretch your legs and a big lake to boot. The RV campground is a rectangular area with the restrooms and dump at one end and three parallel roads with water and electric campsites lining the roads. Don't expect privacy or charm. But, when you leave the campground to visit the rest of the park, it is really lovely. This is a very popular campground. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

No WiFi, no sewer connections, no pull-throughs, lot not level, and this place gets 8.5 stars? Give me a break! We asked for a refund on one night's stay out of three within an hour of arrival and were told to go pound sand (politely). The good news is that the sites are generously spaced and the park is lovely. Plus there is a 24 hour duty guard to check you in. I wouldn't stay again. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful park and lake with boat ramp and rentals in-season. Campground is uphill from the lake and has four loops. Only Loop D has W/E hookups. Many sites are pull-through and most are pretty level. Some more spacious than others. Right now half the sites are reservable site-specific and the other half are first-come first-served. Loop B can accommodate RVs for dry camping but wouldn't attempt taking a larger RV into Loops A or C. Too bad Loop B doesn't have utilities as it is very shady and pretty. Verizon signal good enough and got several local stations through OTA antenna. Rangers patrol often. Staff very helpful. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Very well maintained park and campground. Beautiful lake and trails. Rangers, staff and host were super nice. We were only there for a night but wanted to stay a week. Host came and checked on us right after we arrived. Spaces were level and well maintained. The pull through sites were near to each other but spaced well. Convenient to the highway. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Gate is covered 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 20$ per night does not include water or electricity. Bathrooms were very clean. Showers were excellent with individual shower stalls w/doors. Slept in a hammock with plenty of trees. August Host was very nice. Situated on a beautiful lake with marina access. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Tent.

Stopped for the night. We called before making reservations to confirm 38' MH would be OK. The ranger said no problem, they have many pull thru sites that will accommodate. Reservation was not site specific, so when we showed up, park was very crowded and we got nervous about finding a site that would fit us with toad attached. We stayed in loop D, water/electric, 30 amp. We found a pull through that worked, roads very tight within park, but doable with toad attached. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed overnight on the way to and from Nashville. Park appeared to be very well maintained and clean. After 6 hours of driving, the park provided a welcome rest. We didn't take advantage of the trails or beach. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Great campground with easy interstate access for our road trip. It was nice to see an actual person in the guard shack at night, rather than messing with registration envelopes. We stayed on the B loop without hookups. You don't get to choose your specific site until you get to the park, but apparently that is changing in March 2018. Very quiet at night and no flooding problems despite persistent rain. Bathrooms were a little dated but kept clean. Nice to have a dish sink and grey water dump at the bathhouse. Individual shower rooms had a few bugs but the water was nice and hot. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Really nice State Park in Southwestern Virginia. Even with a reservation you choose your own site and all of them - on the Water/Elec "D" loop anyway - are very spacious, level, well kept and private. There are a number of nice back in sites and plenty of huge pull-throughs.

We were not here 5 mins before the camphost came over and welcomed us.

Lots of trees, but our rooftop SAT still worked and there is both Verizon and ATT cell/broadband service. No wifi anywhere, however.

The bathrooms are old, but pleasant places that are spotless and kind of "summer campy" in look.

We stayed only for the night so we don't know what the lake or the rest of the park looks like. But this park just a couple of miles off of I-81 is a gem. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Wow. Fabulous. Sites are huge, trees, wide, pea gravel with borders, Level. Lantern hangers, friendly people. The lake is long and interesting, beach for swimming, fishing, boat rentals. Rented a pontoon boat for the day, good price and excellent service. Highly recommend. Shower free, clean and hot water. Cabins available are resort like, would be a great place for a large family reunion. WiFi and cell spotty but come in enough to make communication very doable. Loved this place. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a very nice campground on a beautiful lake--and it's very convenient to the highway. We were in section D with water and electric--no sewer. We had a large, level, gravel, back-in site with plenty of shade. (Some of the trees needed trimming.) There is no wifi or cable TV. The restrooms are old, but clean. We definitely plan to return!
