The location of this RV is perfect! That is the reason that I would rate this RV park so high. Sadly, the grounds are just merely satisfactory/poor. The grass was very high, many sites are in wet areas that sometimes flood (they have sump pumps in several locations around the park), the Water/Electric area did not have any site markings to know where to park. However, I would absolutely stay here again because the area around The Colonies and the location is wonderful. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Oozlefinch Brewery is located right on the Fort grounds. Music, food trucks, and brewery with plenty of space to play. The Fort itself was wonderful to walk around and explore. Scratch Bakery is a delicious little find with bakery goods, breakfast treats, and even a few lunch offerings.

Overall Rating:

First saw this park when looking for a place to watch our son's carrier depart on deployment. Tried to stay here another time but no space was available. Area is like being in a large park in an urban environment. Very quiet even though you can see the traffic backed up going into the tunnel. Close to the beach but not very sandy. Not a lot of amenities at the park but plenty of stuff to do nearby. No WiFi or cable. Local tv channels are strong. Satellite works on some sites but trees affect others. Solid Verizon coverage with good speed. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nicely stocked store. Bugs a problem after dark, bring repellent. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

This park is too expensive for what it offers but it is all about location, it is the best option in a very dense population area . No wifi, no pools, no frills but a clean comforable park with a view of the bay from both sides of the coach, a well stocked store and nice shade from beautiful Live Oak trees. The best choice when visiting the Norfolk area We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Would have rated a 10 except for the price. This should be a $45 park. It is very clean and the spaces are large and not right on top of each other. All are back in spaces, but easy in and easy out. The park is right across from the beach, easy walking. Had good satellite service in our space, but there are some trees that might not have good access. There is a wonderful museum right down the road. No dog park but pet friendly. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Overall we loved this park. We had a beautiful view of the bay from our sight. We stayed 5 nights, but would love to come back and stay longer. Good shopping about 15 minutes away. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

This park is small and convenient to the interstate, shopping and quick access to the Norfolk area. Private beach and great sea wall walking, no wi fi or cable, park too expensive for what it is but in line with the area. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Fort Monroe is a decommissioned Army fort in 2011 and is now a National Monument. It's called the Colonies because each of the 13 RV sites is named after one of the original 13 colonies when the nation was in it's infancy. Our site for the week was Massachusetts. The fort is surrounded by water, and was first commissioned in 1861, just months after the start of the Civil War. The park itself does not have many of the regular amenities, like a pool, spa or game room. What it does have are paved sites and paved roads. The sites are widely spaced and are full hookup. At the current time only 5 of the 13 sites are 50 amp, but the new owners are in process of adding 50 amp to the remaining sites. Some sites are shaded, but others are more open and sunny. One of the oddities of the sites is that the water hook up is located on the passenger side rear of the site, so at least a 25' water hose is required for hook up. There are some amenities, like some playground equipment, lots of surrounding open grassy area that was well trimmed, and a walking path that ran along next to the seawall on the Chesapeake Bay. The restrooms/showers are clean and handicapped accessible, but there is just one for men and one for women. In between the shower areas is one washer and one dryer. There is a club/restaurant on the site, called the Paradise Club which serves food and beverages. However, the day that we went was our first day arriving at the campground, and it was also the last day of operations for the club as it was closing for the season. On the up side the RV park was spacious and dead quiet at night. On the down side, the heat during the days, and the presence of various biting bugs kept us from spending much time outside. A different time of year may be better. We paid $49 a night plus tax. There is also no Wifi offered at the park, but due to the close proximity of a cellular tower, our Verizon air card was blazing fast. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a nice park with just 13 spots. The spots are spacious and you can't beat the scenery and quiet calmness. We really loved it. Fort Monroe is amazing. If you stop at The Colonies be sure to take a day to walk around the wall of Fort Monroe, you won't regret it.

The park itself is fairly basic. Just one washer/dryer. Two restrooms with showers. A decent supply store. And an ok recreation room.

Access to the beach is across the street and down a 100 yard (or so) driveway. This puts you on the seawall, and there are stairs down to the beach. This beaches on the island are all great for beach combing. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

You have to spend a day checking out Fort Monroe. Park near the Casemate Museum and make your way up onto the wall. You can walk all the way around the entire fort up on the wall, and it's worth taking an hour or so to make the loop.

We arrived when there was leftover snow on the ground from previous snowstorms. It was plowed very nice in there, and we were able to get into our spot easily. Once the snow melted, the ground was loaded with dog poop and cigarette butts from other campers. We cleaned up close to 3 packs of butts just in front of our door. It is very quiet here, and you can hear waves from the ocean, and fog horns when its foggy. Very relaxing sound. There is only 1 washer, 1 dryer, and they are right at the entrance to both the shower rooms. If anyone is doing laundry its a tight squeeze, but passable to get into either shower room. Shower rooms are kept very clean. The dryer took 1 1/2 hours to dry one load. There is no internet--not even up at the building. They rent a 2G Verizon wifi card for $20. There isn't any exercise room as stated on the website. Most of the campground is very clean, and the people in the office are friendly. Along the shore that doesn't have a beach, is loaded with sand spurs. Not recommended to walk dogs there!!!! Overall the campground is nice. A few of the sites do flood when it rains, and it will be ankle deep with water when it does. Fortunately, the only water we had to wade through was on the side where our levers are for the tanks. I think they need to enforce picking up after dogs. When we went down to the beach to walk, the entrance to that had a large pile of dog mess left there by one of the office workers dogs. (A few of us watched it go there). The picnic areas are full of it too. They need to enforce people cleaning up after their dogs, which is one thing that not only annoys me, but others. Overall, the campground is nice, mostly clean other than a couple of these gripes, and very quiet. Off season rates are reasonable, and electric is included with the price. I don't know what summer prices are. All the sites are level. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here while enjoying some quality time with our grandson. Great beach with good salt water fishing. Lovely owners with a well stocked general store. This was a military campground left over when Ft. Monroe was an active base. Not but five 50 amp sites. I would highly recommend. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Owners worked with us and were very nice. Roads are a little tight, but we were ok in a 36' 5th wheel. Only one washer and one dryer. Only one bathroom/shower for women and one for men. Nearby beach club offers a pool (additional cost) but also loud music at night...especially on the weekends. Beach is close by as well as playgrounds. We enjoyed visiting the nearby fort as well. Overall, we would return to this park if in the area. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great place, just like when the military ran it. Now it's privately run. The people who run the place are very personable and keep the place up nice. The exterior buildings look dismal; it's hard to perform upkeep on a historical building, which is frustrating. But the interior is immaculate! Try it some time. Wonderful place. Extremely quiet. For military families-either retired or active duty. Thirteen full hook up sites and six overflow sites with water/electric. Swimming pool is at the Community Center just up from the campground. Lots of history, good fishing and right off the ocean with private beaches. You can watch all the ships go in and out of the Norfolk Naval Base. We camped at The Colonies RV & Travel Park in a Tent Trailer.
