Great little campground. It is only 16 sites, but for what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in friendliness and a quiet environment. Since it is so small, and the owners are so friendly you quickly get to know most of your fellow campers. The week we were there, one of the campers had everyone over to their campsite for a get-together! The park itself is very nice and very quiet. It is truly somewhere to go to get away from it all. It does not have all of the amenities that many parks have (no pool, dog park, laundry, etc.), but that is not why you would go there, you go there to enjoy the quiet and friendliness of the park. That being said, they did have cable and pretty good internet included. If you want to go, reservations are advised as during our stay there was hardly much time when there was an open site; as soon as someone left, someone came in to take their spot. One note - There is NO AT&T cell and spotty Verizon coverage. I was able to use the Wi-Fi for my cell phone, so keep that in mind. Previous reviews mentioned the roads and yes, the roads are windy narrow country roads, but can be done. We visited in a 44 MH pulling a car and made it without issue. Just follow the directions on their web site. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

We are so glad we came here! Our site was right along the little stream that runs through the campground. There were kids catching crawfish, looking for frogs and just generally loving nature. The site is all gravel, but extremely well set up with plenty of room for us to relax outside. Owners treated us like family friends; checked in on us daily to see if we were okay. Loved it!!!! We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

New River is two blocks away with awesome trails. Went to the Blue Ridge Music Museum - enjoy their musicians daily from 11-3. Galax is nearby with all the Walmart, etc you can handle. Creek Bottom Brewery is fun for lunch.

Love Virginia, and, totally in love with Fries, Galax and Fries New River RV Park. Follow the directions on their website - roads are narrow & twisty but doable for Class A's. This is a quaint, small, immaculately maintained, well thought out, just about perfect place to rest, refresh, and get back in touch with whats important in life. We were in a full service site (30 amp) that was parallel to a small creek which was just perfect for a Class B with a sliding door - heaven! They offer cable TV, WiFi, and a bathhouse as welcoming as the one you have at home. The New River Bike Trail is right across the street and if you forgot your bike they have one for you. From the time you check in at their picturesque office cottage, sit a spell in their rockers, chat about the area, you'll know you are "home". We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Venture out to the Thursday night Bluegrass Jam Session in town at the historic Fries Theater and they'll have you hand clapping and stomping your feet in no time at all. Soak it all in - this is some of the best Virginia has to offer!

Visit the Bluegrass Museum on the Blue Ridge Parkway to learn all about the history of the Town of Fries and catch the daily jam session. Galax Restaurants: Creek Bottom Brewing - great craft beer with an exceptional food menu. Galax Smokehouse - WOW, great BBQ. Try the Smoked, Deep Fried Baloney Sandwich - outstanding! Scoots - really good down home cooking. Daily special sells out early!

First get the name right. It is not Fries like something you would eat. It is pronounced as Freeze. You will quickly be corrected if you make the mistake. LOL On a 1 to 10 scale I give this one a 9. Only because I don't think it is large enough and more people should be allowed to enjoy this one. An extremely well kept campground for sure. The owners take extra great care of their campers and park. Only 16 sites , but each and every one has a ton of room and all the hook ups are clean and taken care of. Not sure if there is a rig too big that these sites can't handle. Somebody thought this RV park out really well. His bath house and rest rooms are spotless. Walk straight out of the RV parks road and you will walk right up to a nice over look view of the river. Just follow the road down to the river grounds. A well maintained local park on the river awaits you. It is also the start of the flat no hill NEW RIVER TRAIL. Bike riders will love this place. We were here for the 4th of July week. If you want a place to sit back and relax this is a great campground to do so at. If you stay here you will like it.

Call ahead for a site. It is a small park and fills up fast. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you want a campground with lots to do around the area it has that also. Did I mention fireworks ? You actually get 2 shows in one night. The local fire Hall has one then the town after that. WOW what a fireworks show for such a tiny town. It was down at the river and can rival any larger city's fire works show. You can not help but get a good view of this show.I will be posting a YOUTUBE video of the show later. Lots to do around this area. The Parkway is not far away and the local music at the town hall theater is nice too. There is of course the fiddlers convention held around here in the early fall also. Largest one in the world I might add.

I would stay here for no other reason than to stay here! Friendly, immaculate, quiet, great wifi, great cable, tasty muffin. We were there was for hiking and biking. The scenery is beautiful and the activities are very nice. The town of Fries is in sad shape, but, even so, it is clean and friendly. Verizon almost works, AT&T doesn't. That said, the wifi was so good, we were able to call family and friends with Facebook Messenger, .and Google Talk. The RV spaces are very large and level. Lots of healthy deer to watch. I was given very good directions in and met by the owner who personally directed us to our site. Quiet comfortable night's stay. Used showers and bathrooms the next morning and they were very clean. As we were packing up the owner checked with us to make sure everything was enjoyable and that we had a nice stay. I would recommend it highly. Spent a wonderful 5 days here with my family. Small park with only 15-16 sites that are all level, large, and fairly private. We stayed at site 15. Very private, complete with deck overlooking a small creek that meanders from the back of the park to the front. Each site has full hookups and 30/50 amp power. All sites and roads are covered with gravel which keeps the park very clean, even in bad weather. During our stay we had several strong rain events and our site (and overall park) drained very well. The park is located in the town of Fries which is 15-20 minutes from Galax, Va. it is where the 50+ mile long New River Trail begins. Trail is relatively flat and runs alongside the beautiful New River. The park owner is extremely nice and helpful. He developed the park and obviously takes great pride in his work. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small park owned and managed by one of the friendliest and helpful hosts I've run across. The park is very quiet. The spaces are all large and easily accessible even with larger rigs. The sites are gravel as are the roads. The wifi was excellent but Verizon cell coverage here is pretty poor. Access to the New River Trail State Park is nearby and you can jump on the trail in a number locations very convenient to the park.
This owner obviously prides himself in the park looking nice, neat and clean. The restroom/shower was spotless. Would definitely stay again. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Not much going on in Fries itself other than easy access to the New River Trail. Only shopping in Fries was at Dollar General so come well stocked or make the 20 min. drive to Galax where there is a lot of shopping, eating, etc. In fact the Galax Smokehouse has excellent brisket.

Great small park with wonderful owners. Lots to do in the area. Camped in a 45 foot motorhome. Suggest you call the owners, when you get near to get specific directions. We also disconnect our toad in Galax with the toad preceding the RV talking radios to make sure traffic is clear at the curves.

Verizon cell phone service is not good. You can activate WiFi on your smart phone using the parks WiFi to make and receive calls.

Attend the Fries jam on Thursday nights in the town recreation buildings for a great taste of old timey and mountain music. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

This campground is lovely, clean, quiet and well kept. The owner goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome. He even helped us set up and arrived at 6:30 AM to help us hook back up when we left as he knew we were not very familiar with the process.

The two private baths are spacious and spotless. The fact that the campground is in the "holler" seems to keep it a bit cooler than the surrounding area in the summer.

We loved the campground, Fries, the New River Trail and the old time music. A great place to get away from the rat race!

Note: If you stay in site #7 it is like having your own private restroom/shower. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a great little deli just out of town at the bridge which has quite an extensive menu, great prices and fun people. We liked it better than the cafe in town.

Sharing the building with the deli is a bike/kayak/tube rental place that we rented kayaks from. They also sell fishing licenses.

We stayed for almost a week and overall, had a wonderful and relaxing time. It's about 20 miles off I-77, nestled in a 'holler' across from New River State Park and trail, surrounded by tall trees. The owner was great, always available and took obvious care of his park. Sites are hard packed pea gravel, fairly level with conveniently located hookups. There's a lot of privacy between sites. It's very quiet at night. Most sites are pull-thrus but a couple were pull-ins. Wifi was great. To get cable, you have to pick up a box from the office.

The park is missing a few amenities - no dog park, no laundry facilities, no pool, no playground, no fire ring. You can rent bikes at the office and the New River Trail is right across the street. The park is not easy to get to, especially if you have a big rig. But the park itself is big rig friendly. Just be sure to follow the directions EXACTLY as written on the website. Also, no credit cards accepted. You make a deposit via PayPal and pay the rest in cash when you arrive. Still, this is a gem of a park and we will certainly return. We are repeat visitors to this campground and always enjoy our stay. The owners work hard to create a sense of community among the campers which makes our time there always a pleasant experience and we always drive away with names and addresses of new friends we have met. We stayed in site 16, one of the new sites at the top of the hill. It is a very private site and worked well for us because we could set up an xpen for our small dogs in the grassy area. The campground is manicured like a high end resort and continues to improve each time we are there. We will return, just one of those places you go back to. What a unique park! Nestled in a "holler," the owners have created an oasis for RV'ers. We had site 4, up a hill in the "balcony." The sites are large, well maintained, and secure. There is a garbage can at each site. The owner has just added two more sites and has plans for a laundry room. We had a truck issue and our dog had some mysterious transient illness. The owner gave us good referrals for both. Our original reservation was for a week but we kept extending and left at sixteen days! Can't wait to return. Nice small campground with very nice and helpful owner. The cable TV is a problem as they have to come to your site and hook it up. The Wi-Fi worked well. Fries is a very small town with a nice town park along the river. The only real attraction is the New River Trail which less than 1/2 mile away. It is for walking, bicycles and horses. It is a mostly level trail that follows the new river down stream. Returning up stream is not difficult though. As it was October, the canoe outfitters were closed except on the weekends. We camped at Fries New River Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.
